I am at a brick wall with Noah. Going by a statement on the pension file of his widow Jane Fincher Coleman contains a deposition by his mother in law saying that Noah was generally known as to be illegitimate and that he used both Coleman and Billing's as surnames. The Greenville County, South Carolina 1810 census pp.110, lists a Richard Fincher household as well as a John Billings household. In the 1820 Greenville County census, pp. 113, Noah's widow Jane (as you stated) was apparently listed as using the Billings surname. I don't know if there is a relationship or not. (I do have the estate papers on the guardianship of Eliza and Mahala.) I do have their descendants. Just can't find anymore information on Noah Coleman. A. D. Smith

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UeB.2ACI/3147.1 Message Board Post: A document filed in Greenville County Wills names Jane Coleman as Guardian of the Personal Estate of Eliza and Mahala Coleman, Heirs of Noah Coleman, Decd. Funds for this Personal Estate come from payments received from the United States Agent in Charleston and are in lieu of bounty land. Paid as balance of pay of the said deceased, the part coming to said children. Eliza married a James Gridley and settlement of her portion was made in 1825. Final settlement was made to Mahala in 1832 when she became of age. Jane is shown in 1820 Census in Greenville as Jane Billings. My second great-grandfather was Joseph Coleman, also shown on the Greenville Census of 1820. Let me know if you can find a relationship between the two.

Perhaps you and your parents could ask around. Seems that is the problem, so many people havent heard about the cemetery. It is across the big bridge from the Brandon community, to the right after you get acoss the bridge. They recently have put little flags up like they are going to widen the road or something, which is a scary thought, to say the least. My ancestors lived at 6 Ross St. many many years ago. Also one of their sons William Alf Smith lived on South St. Please let me know if you find out anything. Pat Wells
