I also have relatives in the Hennon-Smith Cemetery. I have tried to find the cemetery several times, but had no luck. I know it is located just outside of Mauldin, in the community of Conestee. My cousin has the family Bible that belonged to Thomas Hennon. It is very bad shape, and the family would be intersted in finding someone who can restore the Bible and preserve it. I would be willing to share any information on the Hennon and Smith families. What is your relation to the Hennon and Smith? E-mail me at THart39626@aol.com

The cemetery for Brandon Mill is not located right in the Brandon Community. It is located across the big bridge and on the right, right after you cross the bridge. I hear there are red flags up and the road blocked off and construction going on in the area, which is very upseting and none of the officials seem to think anything can be done about it. They can't even go on theproperty to visit the graves. The mill owned a lot of property which accounts for the community, the mill and the cemetery being so far apart....this is what I have heard, I don't know the area. My Smith ancestors and other Smith family members worked at the mill and were buried in the Brandon Cemetery. If any of your family was there before say, the mid 50s and worked in the Brandon Mills, they could be buried there too. Thank, Pat Wells
Thanks so much, Dolores. He was just Reuben D. Dawkins. Hope your family's better. I do not know. Sallie was married to Samuel Ware and they have the following childred. Martha, Joseph, William, Erastus, Thomas Jefferson, Frances, Polly and Nancy. Sallie may have been previously married and some of the childred may have come from that marriage. Samuel Ware fought in the battle of the Cow Pens. Sallie and Samuel moved west starting around 1810, and died in Ar. Hi Susan, Thanks so much for answering my query about the William Choice/Choyce family. This seems to be the correct generation and family, but we can't seem to find any of William and Caroline's children in Greenville. The SC department of Archives and History as a Q&A document at the below address. It covers several aspects of cemetery preservation and restoration and includes references to the SC law regarding cemetery desecration. http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/htln6.pdf The following links relate to the activities of a couple of other groups concerned with preserving a couple of SC cemeteries. http://www.interment.net/column/commentary/20000325.htm http://www.chicora.org/desecrat.htm I think the law is very clear but politicians are able to get around the law when it suits them. I dont live in the area but have heard that there is a fence. Do you know if there is a part of it that doesnt have a fence? I heard about the construction and that is so much what has me into such a panic. I can just see it now, the contruction workers saying "whoops, didnt know anything about any graves being here!" Do you have any idea what the construction is for? I wonder if it has been sold for a business or something. I am afraid, even if it is just to widen the road, that it will take some of the graves. A SC cousin recently went to the Sheriff's Office, the Judge and the Senator...they all said they couldn't do anything...that private property is private. The historians interpret the law differently, more like you said. I think it is a pitiful thing for the town to forget about the people who worked at the "Historic" Brandon Mill. All of the local historians and officials so far, say they never knew anything about the cemetery. I am sure there must be hundreds of graves in there, it was about 6 or 7 acres. It was the cemetery for the mill, not just my family. Thanks, Pat Wells
Annie Lois Barbare, 89, died at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center in Laurens, SC, Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at 12:30 AM. Nephews and nieces are E. Richard Taylor, Drayton Barbare, Polly Barbare Adkins, Lollie Barbare Eykyn, and John D. Culbertson. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Polly West Barbare. In July, 1974, "The State" newspaper had this to say: Lois Barbare, who for 34 years directed the development of the book collection of the South Carolina State Library, retired June 30. Miss Barbare came to the State Library in 1943 from the Stark General Hospital in Charleston where she had established and developed library services for patients. During her years with the South Carolina State Library, the book collection grew from 25,888 volumes inherited from the Works Project Administration[sic] (WPA) to more than 150,000 in 1978[sic]. Miss Barbare supervised the publication of a complete catalog on microfilm and the distribution of this catalog to the county and regional headquarters of each public library system in the state. In addition to her service to the State Library, Miss Barbare has assisted public libraries throughout the state to streamline and update their cataloging and processing procedures. She was honored by the SCSEA on June 10, 1995 as a Charter Member. According to the SC State Employees Association history (http://www.scsea.com/): The South Carolina State Employees Association is a non-profit, non-partisan organization established to advance the welfare of state employees and retirees and to promote efficiency in the administration of the business affairs and public services of state government. It is supported financially by the dues of those employees and retirees who choose to be members. The Association started in 1943, when a group of about 20 state workers wanted to establish a state retirement system[italics mine, jdc]. Because establishing the system required an amendment to the State Constitution, the employees organized an informal state employee group to publicize the need and work for a state retirement system. They solicited voluntary contributions to finance the effort to achieve the retirement system. Eventually, a steering committee was formed and officers and a board of directors were appointed. The Association's first president, the late F. M. Rast, was elected, and by 1945, the S. C. Retirement System was a reality. "In 1945 there were approximately 50 members of the Association" [per telecom SCSEA, 3/27/2002, based on certificates awarded in 1995, jdc.] In 1946 the South Carolina State Employees Association was officially chartered. The Association has won many benefits for state employees since that time, including pay increases, retirement increases, a state grievance procedure, the state-supported health insurance plan, the dental insurance plan, improvements in leave, and retirement with full benefits after 30 years of service. Lois was the daughter of the late Annie Hudson & the late James Drayton Barbare of Taylors. She attended and was graduated from Greenville Woman's College (1933) The University of South Carolina (1933) and Emory University, Atlanta (1938) with a degree in Library Science. Additionally, she was Supervisor of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Library Project and had held jobs with the WPA as District Supervisor (two different districts in SC), Cataloger and Assistant State Supervisor. She was employed by the State Library as Assistant Executive Secretary for the SC State Library Board. Memorials may be made to the Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center in Laurens. The graveside service was at Milford Baptist Church Cemetery, Taylors, SC, at 11:00am Thursday, 3/28/02. The chaplain from the Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center led the service, and Mrs. Ellen Barbare (Culbertson) Abramo, Lois's grand-niece, sang "It Is Well With My Soul" which was Lois's favorite hymn. Woods Funeral Home in Greer had charge of the funeral arrangements. "She loved classical music and walks on the beach at Pawleys Island." John D. Culbertson
There was a William Choice who married Caroline Cleveland, daughter of Jeremiah Cleveland (who became one of Greenville's wealthiest citizens, and is mentioned as a local merchant by 1805), in Greenville in 1832. This may not be the generation you are looking for, but perhaps the right family. This is from A.V.Huff's book, "Greenville". William Choice was a nullifier candidate for the legislature in 1832--he lost, but remained prominent in affairs of Greenville for many years. The only other mention of the Choice family other than this William is a list of families including a Choice family in adjacent Laurens County, just over the river from Greenville, in 1785--I don't know if the above William Choice descended from this family..
