Cathy SOURCE: Greenville Daily News, Page 5 DATE: March 7, 1912 FOUR ANCIENT DEEDS FOR 4,175 ACRES FILED RECORDED YESTERDAY IN THE OFFICE OF MESNE CONVEYANCE 4,175 ACRES AND PURCHASE PRICE $215 DEEDS DATED 1838 TO 1861 PLACED ON RECORD YESTERDAY - LANDS LIE IN THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS ON THE NORTH CAROLINA STATE LINE - WERE WRITTEN WITH GOOSE QUILL PEN ON PARCHMENT THAT IS NOW FADED AND ILLEGIBLE - OTHER DEEDS OF MORE MODERN DATE FILED Probably one of the oldest deeds to real estate as well as one representing the largest tract of land, that has been filed in the office of Register of Mesne Conveyance was recorded yesterday. There were really four rather ancient deeds, but one of them anteceded the others by nearly a quarter of a century. The particularly hoary deed filed yesterday was that of William Southerland to Ben Master, dated March 12th, 1838. Next Tuesday will round out the 74th year since the deed was executed. The transaction represented an exchange of 586 acres of land for $50, the real estate lying in the Blue Ridge mountains, bordering onto the North Carolina State line. Another ancient deed filed, and a right large one, was that of Ben and Rebecca Masters to W. Perry Masters. This was for the transfer of 1,589 acres of land in the Blue Ridge mountains, on the North Carolina state line, for the sum of $5. This was, of course, a conveyance from Father and Mother to son. Still another old deed filed yesterday was that of Stephen D. Keith to Ben Masters, for 1,000 acres of land in the Blue Ridge mountains on the North Carolina State line for the sum of $100. This deed bears the date of Dec. 12, 1861. Another old deed was that of John H. Masters to S.D. Keith, for 1,000 acres of land, for $60. This tract lay in the Blue Ridge mountains, on the North Carolina State line. The deed is dated December 12, 1861. Three of the four ancient deeds were in a bad state of preservation, in fact, they were in tatters, and so faded that it was almost impossible to read them. The writing was done with a goose quill pen. The deeds evidently had been through both fire and flood. They presented the appearance of having been soaked in water. The parchment upon which the deed was written was so rotten that when unfolded the paper cracked in several pieces. It being impossible to read some of the deeds, persons familiar with the wording of the instruments had transcribed the wording to other paper. And from this the Register will have to copy in recording the deed.

Their father was William C. Grant, son of Elizabeth "Betsy" Grant. I have the full names of all his brothers and sisters with the exception of Uncle Will, and I was hoping it would be in his obituary. Some have said the M. stands for Monroe, but that was my grandfather's middle name. My grandfather said his middle name was McClain. I just want something in writing. Thanks a million for helping me out.

I believe the Library handled that work internally. They also now have the 1980s compiled and printed in volumes, and much of the early 1990s is available by them to search if you inquire at the desk in the South Carolina Historical Room. - Tim L. Barbara, Did you know that Barbara is a family name on our side of the GREERS? My only first cousin, who was 15 yrs. older, than I, was named Barbara I'm afraid we pronounced it "Bob-ra" which is more Southern than anything, but it is a wonderful name My middle name is Rachael, and so was Mother's, passed down fr Leah FOWLER. Leah named a dau after her twin, Rachael came straight down the line; surely hate Dolores -Dad picked it up in WWII, I have absolutely no Spanish or Portugese at all in my looks! I realize that this is not what you wrote for me for, but I wanted to throw it is as I love to learn abt the cousins. Spartanburg has Robert's estate papers though there is little to them. Good old Ibba has an exhaustive file that took me months to actually read and diciipher & two wonderful people helping me. When you get Ibba's file, you need to get a great large magnifying glass lots, stickies, and TIME Oh,yes, don't forget that comfortable place. Undoubedly she said what she wanted, vnd I beliee a number of the children wanted her declared incompetent. She had to be a strong woman to have and raise all those children, and we will never know how many stillborns or miscarriages she had.Yet she outlived her husband almost 20 yrs. I feel fine except that I used legacy for years for all my files, had no trouble, and now, Barbara, all my files are gone!!!! Over 5- years of work. The people are there, but all my notes are gone. I am devastated. I had all the wills, estate papers, etc. all typed in for all my ancestors, and I have about 1500 peope. I you know anything about legacy of restore, please help me! Also, I would be happy to share any of my GREER, KILGORE material with you. I'm of the opinion that as long as you don't post it on the internet. God bless,, Dolores
Are Roberts estate papers in Spartanburg County also? If they are I will run over and get a copy. I found her will but not one for him in Spartanburg. I thought it odd that she had a will and he didn't. But from what I have pieced together I think she was a very strong person. I hope you feel better soon. Yes, but she did leave Sarah off as she was already deceased and Thomas J. died - prob. shortly after his father. I know you don't see it in the will, but there are tons of estate papers on both Robert and Isabella; you have to read them also. They are a most interesting couple to me. She is listed as living alone in 1850 as EBEN Greer. That's just the way some of the mistakes happen. I'll find you the proof you need as soon as I get over the dental surgery I just had, and now they have called, and they called today and have to put me to sleep again tomorrow as someone broke/lost/whatever mu forms at the lab. My Nelsons were in Chester and Greenville Sc born in Sc. Noah and Noah Jr.and families. Noah Sr. married Celia and Noah Jr married Penelopy. I know that in Scarrett's Jr. paperwork they were listed in that census. On the new census of Greenville I can't find them. Noah Jr stayed in Sc and Naoh Sr went on to Ga with the some of his family. Can anyone explain what happened to them, in the censu on line? -The name was spelled. Nellson and might have beeen over looked. I connect to the Roberts, and Davis line of Greenville Sc Some also later went to Ga. I would like to know if anyone is able to tell me the marriage dates and last names of Celia -Maybe Ceclia and Penelopy. i know thaere is a downlaod for the 1830's but for some reason I can't get Adobe 6.01 to work. I have tried to downlaod it three times and it appears to download and pull up the files but then a message comes up stating Adobe not responding. Thanks you in advancefor any help and God Bless.
