Hi Could someone tell me where Oaklawn is located in Greenville,co.SC ? Also any information on cemeteries in Oaklawn. Is there an Oaklawn cememtery? Thanks for any help Gay
Tonya, I have included some of the notes I have on Archibald Fowler. The minutes of Brushy Creek Church were taken from either the film or a printed transcription. Spelling is the way it was done originally. I would also like to know your line. I also like finding new cousins. Marion Smith Whiting Father of Archie has not been proven. Greenville County Records show that Archibald Fowler purchased 840 acres of land on Laurel Creek, on the north side of Reedy River, in Greenville County. This land was bounded by the land of Emanuel Austin and John Goodwin. This deed was recorded January 8, 1793, and signed by James Kilgore. In the will of Archibald Fowler, dated February 22, 1839 in Greenville County, South Carolina, he mentions his wife Edy, his daughter Jessify Pike, deceased, and her six children. David Fowler was the administrator. W.B.B., Page 180-181. All of his children were mentioned in the will except Luna. Jul. 6, 1797 George Underwood and Sarah Underwood (Greenville Co) to Archd. Fowler (same); for [blank] sterling sold 170 ac on Laurel Cr of Reedy R; border: joins Wadsworth, Geo Underwood, & Batte Birdsong; granted Nov. 5, 1792 by Gov. Charles Pinckney to "said" Underwood. (signed) George Underwood & Sarah's mark "X"; witness William Bonds & William Martin; wit. oath Jul. 6, 1797 by William Martin to J Kilgore JP; recorded Jun. 4, 1804; book G p. 181. From Minutes of Clear Spring Church, Simpsonville, SC: On 11 December 1802, a committee consisting of Joseph Wilbanks, Solomon Hornbuckle, Archibald Fowler, Pleasant Hudson and Jacob Bridewell was appointed to "fix or pitch upon the most advantage place for a meeting house with good waters, at or near the center of the society as a majority may agree." This was a committee from Brushy Creek Church. The following is from " Everhart - Miller and Allied Families" by Mrs. Allie Everhart Miller and is found on page 173-175. We know he had a good education for the time in which he lived. In person tall, bony and inclined to stoop a little, blue eyes, rather dark hair and sallow complexion. Full six feet height. He was deliberate in motion and thought. He never used an unguarded expression but seemed to weigh well his words before giving utterance to his thoughts. He was a frequent reader of the Bible and a regular attendant on religious worship, but was not a church member at his death. He was inclined to the Baptist Denomination, strictly honest and truthful. He not only practiced these virtues himself, but succeeded well in implanting these principles in the hearts and lives of his children. Archie and Edy were poor when first married but by the characteristics peculiar to both of them (Archie and Edy) industry, perseverance and economy, they accumulated considerable means and were as well off in this world's goods as any in that vicinity. Marion, Thank you for your reply. Dora V. Eskew is listed in the 1880 census as a child of Henry T. Eskew and his first wife Martha. I have a record where her sister Ida and Mettie lived with her and Dora and her husband, G. Rufus Robinson. However, I do not have any information on Carrie Bell Eskew or James R. Eskew. I would appreciate any additional information that you can provide! Thanks! Elaine
I would love to have a copy of that. Please let me know how much to send for a copy and I will get it to you asap! Thanks for sharing that story. It really makes the people we are researching more than just a name in a family tree! His wife did all the horse-raising (w/11 children!) and horse-trading and was known in her day for her skill in the trade. They had a lucrative business because of her (late 1700s-1800s, folks, and she was a woman!). When Leah and Rachael, the set of twins who I descend from (Leah), were young, they looked identical and must have been identical twins. They enjoyed playing tricks on people and switching identities. One night when John "Flint John" MAHAFFEY was courting Leah, Leah was not ready so Rachael slipped down to the porch and sat on the swing with him and let him think she was Leah. This went on for quite a while and then Leah showed up on the porch, they all had a good laugh on poor John. Just one of those neat stories that has survived and helps to make these ancestors three-dimensional rather than just a name on a piece of paper, and I thought you might enjoy reading it. Their children: Jessefy Rachael Leah John West/Wesley Mary West Isaac Lovey Lavina "Vina" Louisa (twins) Luna (twins) Alexander W. Mary and John are said to be the third set of twins. I found most of the above in the book "Miller-Everhart" book which I have and can document if anyone needs it. There is a chapter on Archibald's family. No, I wish I did know the father of Wm. T. ESKEW! Please let me know if anyone finds it! Dolores
I have his will which names his heirs, including his daughter Leah who md. John "Flint John" MAHAFFEY, and they were my GGG-g'parents Would you believe that Archibald "Archie" FOWLER and his wife Edith/Edy WEST had THREE sets of living twins? A total of eleven children. My Leah was a twin to Rachael which is where my and my .mother's middle name Rachael came from - Leah named a dau Rachael. Three sets of twins among eleven children just amazes me! Thanks for looking! Dolores Miller Pringle - some kind of granddaughter of most all of Greenville Co.!!!
I have his abstract of his will that is filed in Apt 3, File 161 and his will was dated Feb. 22,1839 and probated 6-1-1840 and it lists his heirs but that is about all I know about him. Dolores, I don't seem to have any of them. Do you know the father of William T. Eskew? Marion
If I remember correctly there was an Archibald Fowler that was a member of Brushy Creek Baptist Church. I seem to remember seeing him there when I was going thru the minutes looking for my Barbare family. My Barbare family were members in the early 1800's so it would have been in that timeframe. Marion, Opened my files & found that Eliza WHAM MARCHBANKS md (Maj) Wm. T. ESKEW. Tere was a dau listed in their home, in 1870, i believe, who could not have been Eliza's dau so Wm . T. ESKEW must have been married a first time. I don't know abt Wm. T., but Eliza is buried at Graceland in Greenville and was the dau of Hon. William WHAM and Barbara GAULT WHAM. Because Eliza remarried, and her child, Barbara Gault MARCHBANKS, didn't live with them much, and I would like to know more abt Eliza. Thanks, Dolores Miller Pringle
