After all he was in a cemetery with a tombstone, he'd married twice, and he gave a wedding for Lydia in their home! I've never heard of any Wm. Shelton/Sheltons in Surry Co. at all. I worked with a team of Shelton researchers for several years and we never found any Sheltons there nor were we concerned with the Surry Co. Sheltons. All of Williams children, and it is a long list, were either born in SC or NC. The other thing is the deeds with the Indians in the western part of the stateof NC. Two of his sons married Indian or part-Indian sisters, i. e. Ingaboo Conley

There are many William SHELTONs and the John SHELTON/Eleanor PARKS line of which this David is from is affluent. William SHELTON of Haywood Co., NC was not affluent. He was also living in Haywood Co., NC at the same time that David's son William was in another part of North Carolina, forget where, maybe Surry Co.

For a while I thought there might be a Wm. Shelton, Sr. and a William Shelton, Jr. father to S.P.C. and my ggg Joel Thomas Shelton plus others. There is a grave in the Waynesville Cem. called Old Billy Shelton and that is OUR William, I've been told. I e-mailed someone the other day that I found Wm. living in SC among Bates family members (check the neighbors). They parted due to her death or they got a divorce somewhere and he returned to NC. There he marr Lydia Parker; there are quite a few Parkers there. My ggg-Uncle John Stone married Mary Parker in Dalton GA. His Mother was Margaret (Peggy) Shelton Stone *b Haywood Co. to Joel & Mary, and Jasper Stone her husband. I believe diabetes MAY run through the Bates line. Have you by chance heard the quote of Sarah Shelton Chastain who says of William, "I was married at my father's home on the banks of the Tucksaseegee R..." She married Edward Chastain. We know Sarah was the daughter of Wm. and she claimed Lydia Par! ker was her Mother. She and Joel Thos., my ggg, were only a year or so apart. He married Mary Chastain Edward's sister. S. P. C. came to Texas in the 1870's though I've heard they came earlier. I have corresponded with a descendant Cecil Downey. He says some came later, 2nd, in the 1882-3's. His brothers Chastain and James Madison were with him, and they are buried in Ellis Co. TX cemeteries. Cecil's Grandfather was also called S.P.C.( different names though). Other Shelton brothers went to Brown Co.TX. Wm. went there and marr and they named their daughter Zephyr, after the town they lived in. They moved BACK to NC. She was A. Rogers, had large land holdings in Cullowhee NC ...later they gave land to Western Carolina Univ. (This must be the 2nd William.) Probably the cemetery records of Haywood Co. will tell the story. As far as their land deeds go, we went to the Haywood Co. Courthouse several times and found many Shelton deeds, some with the Indians who used their Indian names. You might be able to write the courthouse or they may be at the LDS. I have unbelieveable amounts ! of Shelton records and may take a while. I am still working on my files.

That message is on this Board under the heading of "William Shelton". The David referred to here held to be descended from a Peter Chilton of Middlesex County, VA, with some of his records being recorded as Chelton and Shelton. The David in Fairfield, South Carolina, is the son of Samuel Shelton of Albermarle County, VA, who was brother to the John Shelton who married Eleanor Parks. Their father was John Shelton, documented to have died in 1725, at "Rural Plains", Hanover County, VA. Please read the message I posted on William Shelton to see details of David's son William. I asked if anyone had data which showed that William Shelton moved back and forth between North Carolina and South Carolina. I see this statement posted frequently on the genealogy sites but I have not yet seen the documentation which shows this. William is in the 1850 Haywood County, NC, census and also in the 1830 Haywood County, NC, census. In 1830 William Shelton, Esq. was in Union County and probably was the son of David. If you have data on William's moves to and from NC which you would have the time to share, this would be extremely helpful. Thank you.

Notes for Nancy Whitman: Sources: http://www.dfchapter.homestead.com/Wedaman.html "The Johannes Wedaman Family" Death Certificate of Polly Morgan lists Nancy's last name as Whitmire. However there were two death certificates filed, the second with the name Whitman for Nancy. See notes under Polly Anne for further explaination. Surnames commonly seen for Nancy are Whitmire, Whitman, Wedenman and Wedaman. I have chosen to use Whitman as it is the name on daughter Polly's second, more complete death certificate. Notes for David Morgan: Information provided by Mark McCall e-mail [email protected] on both Nancy and David's names. Source of date, as well from Mark on Nancy's birth. Nancy's death date comes as an estimate based on not being able to find her with her family in census records of 1860. She may have been one of the possible victims of the Indigo poisoning, that was supposed to have occurred sometime in the 1850s. 11/4/03 Update on the note above. See notes under Nancy Whitman for updated information regarding her and her ancestry. I have been in contact recently with another researcher by the name of Steve Morgan, [email protected] who has done some more research with the Carolina Morgans, which shows my Polly Anne to be a daughter of David Morgan and Nancy Wedenman. Upon further research with Steve's help I was able to determine that the Surnames Whitman and Wedenman, also seen as Wedaman are interchangable and many of the descendants used one or the other. In addition see notes under Nancy Whitman as to how I determined that her name was Whitman as opposed to Whitmire. This is a continued work in progress as there still are questions and conflicts to be worked out. However the probability of this being the accurate parentage and ancestry of Polly Anne is very high. I'd even say 90 plus %. Changes and updates will be made as they are discovered. Prior to this date all I knew! about David was his first and last name only with no dates and primary source being Polly's death certificate. Children of Nancy Whitman and David Morgan are: 26 i. Notes for Polly Anne Morgan: Known as "Polly". Laverne Montanez ( e-mail [email protected] ) said she has seen information that indicates Polly was Mary as opposed to Margaret. Information on the names and birthdates of the children comes from the family Bible of Polly's- according to Laverne. However, this is preponderance of evidence data from the work of numerous researchers in Virginia records and not proven by legal documentation beyond the 1777 sale, including the parentage of David of Caswell, who, incidentailly, married first Elizabeth Matlock which is documented by the will of her father as are the names of her three children, John, Lucy, Agnes. This line is thought to be descended from Peter Chilton/Chelton/Shelton (most of his records are recorded as "Chilton" but records with the other two spellings do exist) from Middlesex County, VA., living there about 1680 or so. The David Shelton of Fairfield County, South Carolina, is the son of Samuel Shelton, son of John Shelton, d. 1726, at "Rural Plains", Hanover County, VA. This John is not the same as the John who married Eleanor Parks but rather was the father of the John that married Eleanor. Whether his son William lived in Union, SC, is data I do not have but it is documented that David's daughter was married to a Sims and did live in Union County, SC. There is in the Union County, SC, 1830 census a William Shelton, Esq. while there is also a William Shelton in the 1830 Haywood County, North Carolina, census, so I do not believe the Union County William is the same one as the NC William who married 1st Mary Bates, 2d Lydia Parker. That "Esq." is quite typical of the "Rural Plains", Hanover County, VA, family. I would be so appreciative if you have the time to share the documentation showing William Shelton of Greenville County, South Carolina, moved to Haywood County, North Carolina, then returned to South Carolina, then moved back to North Carolina, where, according to census information William must have died between 1850-1860. In the 1860 census, "L. Shelton, age 60, born in South Carolina, is resident in the household of William's son listed in William's household in 1850 as Samuel. In 1860 he is heading his own household as S. P. C. Shelton with his wife, his children and "L. Shelton" in the newly created county of Jackson, North Carolina which was created from Haywood County in 1852. William owned $500 in real estate in the 1850 Haywood census and S. P. C. Shelton owns $1,500 in real estate in Jackson in 1860. Does anyone has access to those real estate records? Thank you for any assistance.

    2. Barbara Rutan
    3. I am very interested in the Austins and also Mary Jane Barbary that you list. I have a Mary Jane Barbary (the 1850 and 1860 census give her date of birth between 1839 and 1841) who was the daughter of Squire Barbary and Temperance Austin Barbary. I have not been able to find Temperance's father. Nancy Austin, age 50, was living with them in the 1850 census. It shows Temperance age as 22 in 1850. There is also a 1 year old child named Nancy so everything being equal it appears that Nancy was Temperance mother and they named a daughter after her. The dates of birth Squire and Temperance have been hard to tie down because the 1850 census give their ages as 24 and 22, the 1860 gives them as 36 and 19, the 1870 give them as 60 and 44 respectively. Any info is greatly appreciated.
