    3. So sorry but I don't have a John Smith that married Narcissa or John Wesley Smith. I have several John Smiths that married into varies lines of my families. If you want the info on them let me know will be happy to give you what I have. The Smiths married into my Barbare family and one of my cousins had ask that I try to track down his father's family; however, we can't find his grandfather to get a start on tracking them down. Very fustrating. My cousin's father's name was Charles Elerson Smith born in SC 9-6-1883 and died in Rock Hill, SC 8-7-1971 he married Augie Barbare but that line of Smith's has also disappeared. So if you see them please let me know. 3. To Barbara Rutan and [email protected] I received your message thru the Greenville List listing Smith interests. I have a possible Smith connection in the Greenville Area. It is probable that my father's great grandfather was a John Smith and his wife was Narcissa. I found a John Smith and Narcissa in the 1880 Greenville Co, Census records, and a probate record for a John Smith in Greenville in 1891 with a son J. W. Smith. My Dad's grandfather was a John Wesley Smith. The ages are off, but that is not unusual in census data. I am reaching at straws to find the right John Smith. Do any of you have a John Smith who had connections to the Lexington Co. area prior to coming to Greenville. John Wesley Smiths DC states he was born in Lexington Co, SC. He later married and lives in Aiken Co, SC before moving to Augusta, Richmond Co. Ga. where my Dad, his grandson was born. I'll have to look at my files again. The John SHELTON, son of the David line, was a sheriff. This was a much more affluent line. In 1850, uneducated William SHELTON and Lydia PARKER owned no slaves and had little money. They appear to be simple family farm owners--not exactly poor, but not affluent either.

She married Benjamin Moses WILSON (1812-1864) on January 7, 1836 in Calhoun County, Alabama. She died in Randolph Co. Arkansas in 1865. I'd like to learn who Mary's parents were, and to confirm the spelling of her surname which has been listed as Canada, Candida, Canady, Kanady, and other ways. Also recorded as Mary Ann Canada. The Wilson geneaology records show that she was half Cherokee, and was born in an Indian block house in Greenville Co, SC. Supposedly, her Anglo line comes from Italy, grandparents may have been Welsh. Her mother or father may have been named Kerr, Kaer, or Karr. Any new info. would be appreciated. I have the time frame about 1859-1860. The only three family names I can list as being on the train are Murphree, Cobb and Kelley. There could have been others. Per my connection with the Murphree researchers the wagon train stoped in GA and spent a peoriod of time. My only reference of the trail they took is in JT's letter where he tells about one of the Murphrees dieing and being buried in Louisiana. I hope this helps. 1. An Undesired Baby
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Brown of Greenville, Spartanburg, & Anderson Classification: Birth Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UeB.2ACI/3877 Message Board Post: An Undesired Baby.---A few weeks ago attention was attracted by the appearance on our streets of a good looking, poorly dressed white woman with a fine baby apparently three or four months old. She came from Fairfield, she said, and seemed to be under the impression that babies were in demand in this market as she began to express a desire to dispose of her’s, avowing her willingness to give it to anybody who would take it. She sat a corner of Avenue and Main streets an entire day exposing the peculiar merchandize, but nobody appeared to want it. Reporters and other unsophisticated persons surmised that the infant probably had a father, but were naturally shy of enquiring as to his whereabouts. The woman finally went to Mrs. Humphreys, where she left her baby while she went to work at the Camperdown mill, where she was given employment for several days. On Wednesday night she left, ostensibly to go to the postoffice, but she was seen no more, and yesterday ! morning a postal card was found under the door at the Camperdown Factory office, saying: “Mrs. Humphrey: Please take care of my Richard Ross, or find some one else who will take care of him better than I can. Tell Mr. Scruggs to pay my wages for board. Yours, Mary Brown.” Miss Mary Brown seems to be a decidedly cool young person. No one has been able to ascertain anything of where she came from or went to. She was apparently about twenty – five years old, and looked like a country girl of the poorer class. Her possession of the infant never seemed to embarrass her in the least, and she always had the air of feeling that there was nothing at all unusual or suspicious in the fact of a young woman appearing at the street corners with a baby and offering to give it away to any applicant. Richard Ross is quite a handsome and well developed youngster, and will doubtless do well if properly cared for. _______________ Greenville Daily News. August 19, 1881.

    3. I don't have any WOOTEN ancestry that I'm aware of, but I spent a few years in eastern North Carolina, mainly Lenoir County (seat: Kinston), which is _full_ of Wootens. In my own case, my Hugh Hardy WHITAKER (1765-1849) was born in the vicinity of Raleigh (state capital of NC, and also centrally located in NC), but his dad, John Whitaker (Patriotic Service, per Patriot Index) (about 1745-1823) had migrated from eastern North Carolina (vicinity of Enfield, Halifax Co.) to central North Carolina. Hugh Hardy WHITAKER migrated to the Pendleton District with his Perry in-laws, and was a cousin of the two WHITAKER brothers who settled in the Kershaw District shortly before the Revolution. Hugh is the apparent ancestor of all Whitaker lines in Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties that were here before 1860. My ggfather, George Robert WHITAKER, was Hugh's grandson through his youngest son, David Lorenzo WHITAKER. Incidentally, Hugh was a Methodist class leader in the Keowee area, David was a Methodist lay preacher, and George was one of three brothers [Marvin who migrated to Texas and Hugh who married into the SLIGH family of Newberry were the other two.] who became regularly-ordained Methodist ministers.
