Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UeB.2ACI/1671.1845.1849.1.2.1.2 Message Board Post: I have a photocopy of Greenville County, SC, Index to Deeds which shows the records of William Shelton(s) of Haywood, beginning with his land grant issued by purchase from Martin Shelton, in 1828. From that date to 1845 there are six other land grants made by the State of North Carolina in the name of "William Shelton". There are also grants or deeds for David, Stephen. E. B., Elizabeth, and other Sheltons through 1876. The entries for the entire page mention these locations: Cherokee Land (William's first grant); Tuckasegee River; Laurel Creek; Jonathan Creek; Flat Creek and Waynestville. If you would provide the source for the quotation about her marriage by Sarah Shelton Chastain, I would be very grateful. I have seen several references to this and, since it is so important, I would like to know where the original record can be found, please. Thank you. By the way, if you wish to prove whether or not the William in David's will is descended from David Shelton of Fairfield, SC, then there is a very simple way to do this. The descent of David is proven by a lawsuit to settle an estate in Louisa County, VA, in which he is named as a legatee. There are three DNA tests for David's line in the Shelton, Chilton, Skelton DNA database (all match, and 2 are from Samuel's children and one from David's uncle's branch of the family, John Shelton of "Rural Plains", Hanover County, VA, married Eleanor Parks and were parents of Sarah Shelton who married Patrick Henry) -- results posted periodically on the Rootsweb Shelton Board by Margaret Shelton. You can look results up there. There is also now a DNA test for a thoroughly documentated descendant of William Shelton of Haywood County, North Carolina. Find a proven descendant of William, son of David Shelton of Fairfield and have him do the DNA test. Then all the theories will either be disproven or proven.

This address was valid in the late 1990s, but you likely will find the correct form at their web site.
