Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/UeB.2ACI/3466.1 Message Board Post: Hi, When I was reading your posting I noticed that you and I have a family member with the name of Loomis which is my surname. I also noticed that you have ancestors in SC, which also happens to be the location of the branch of my family that I am researching. May I ask how the name Loomis came into being in your family? I have a suggestion for your research that someone just gave me. SC has placed many items on line, as well as lists of documents that are available for a small fee. Try these sites: http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/research.htm http://www.scdhec.net/vr/death.htm The first one contains records of court documents that may be of some assistance to you. The second is the public records division which may be of some sort of help to you. I am researching two branches of my family at seem to have a root in SC. One is Col John Q. Loomis who was an attorney who was born in SC. he moved to Alabama and was with the 25th Alabama. He was wounded at Shiloh and was a brigade commander at Murfreesboro. He disappears after the war. The other branch seems to have originated in New York where the main branch of my family originated. His name is Cyreneus Loomis (also found as Cyrenius, and Cyrenins) and the 1850 census states that he was born in NY in 1805. I have found court documents that list his presence in SC as early as 1835 which I am going to Columbia to investigate in August. He had three sons: Charles E. who served in the 3rd Batallion SC Light Artillery (Palmetto Batallion) and served in Columbia, John H (Harvey?) who was captured in Culpepper, VA and was a POW who returned to SC, and Hayne H. who was killed in Petersburg, VA. Cyreneus died during the war in 1864. I believe that John H eventually settled in Aiken and died around 1912. If any of this rings a bell with you I would sure appreciate your sharing any information that you may have that would assist me with my quest. Thanks for your time, John (John Henry Loomis) Alexandria, VA

Cathy Griffith Cathy, I am looking for a Minor Ballew b. 1824 in SC. He was in the 1850 Roane Co. TN Census. He was married to Esther Ballew (maiden name) do John Ballew and Catherine Melton. Minor and Esther named their son George Washington Ballew b. 1848. Also in Roane Co. TN there is a listing for Jacob Ballew who also named his son George Washington Ballew also b. 1848. Seems strange to me unless Minor and Jacob were brothers and their father's name was George. I know there are Ballews in Greenville, but I have never been able to make a connection. Minor's middle name may have been Anderson. Can anyone give me guidance re: where to look for the parents of Minor. TIA, Norma Cathy, I am also researching Lindsay and Griffith. .

    2. Hi all - I have the information on the William BISHOP who married Frances Louisa Jane MOON and Thomas BISHOP who married Nancy E. MOON. The girls were daughters of Gideon MOON and Lucinda (GREER) MOON. Gideon Moon (1804-1888) and Lucinda GREER MOON (1811 -1891) are both buried on the side of Groce Meadow Road in the old Moon graveyard with his parents; William H. MOON b. VA in 1768 and died 1833. His wife was Martha Knewstep GLENN Moon, b. VA 1771 - 1836. The four stones are still readable and very much intact and are visible from the road. The reason I mention this is because I was just informed that a large housing developement is going in there and I pray that they respect the cemetery. If anyone on this list lives by that area please keep and eye out and thanks to Barbara Rutan for letting me know!! Thank you. It is our job to protect our ancestors. I have over 600 pages of MOON information if anyone needs anything. Please contact me!! Kelly Jane Moon O'Hara : [email protected]
