Cathy thank for an interesting article. I do not have a records in my files of this woman. She would have to have been in the time frame of Job Loftis. Strangely enough there is a grave site at Liberty Church of a James and Sallie Loftis(I think she died in her late 90s). Alton

It is typed exactly as it appears in the paper. Cathy SOURCE: Greenville Daily News, Page 8 DATE: Thursday, July 6, 1911 DESIRES TO VISIT FATHER'S OLD HOME QUEER LETTER RECEIVED BY SHERIFF POOLE YESTERDAY, FROM GALVESTON, TEXAS, FROM PARTY PRESUMED TO BE SON OF FORMER GREENVILLE COUNTY SLAVE In the mail of Sheriff Poole yesterday morning was a rather unique letter from Galveston, Texas, which from its badly written contents, appeared to be from a Texas negro, the son of a former South Carolina slave, who was seeking information as to the birth place of his father. George Abraham was the signature at the end of the curiously hieroglyphed communication. The writer stated in a characteristically abrupt way, that his Father's owner had been named Sam Perryman, that he lived in this section of South Carolina, having moved away, it is assumed, some time after the war. The writer expressed his desire to visit the old home of his Father, and requested the Sheriff to send him some information regarding the location of this Perryman Plantation. The Sheriff admits his lack of knowledge on this point, and would doubtless welcome some light on the subjest.

Cathy SOURCE: Greenville Daily News, Page 8 DATE: Tuesday, July 4, 1911 OLDEST WHITE WOMAN IN THIS STATE DEAD AT THE ADVANCED AGE OF 105 YEARS, MRS. SARAH LOFTIS DIED YESTERDAY AT THE HOME OF HER SON, MR. JAMES LOFTIS, IN BATES TOWNSHIP - BORN AND RAISED IN THE SECTION OF COUNTRY IN WHICH SHE DIED Mrs. Sarah Loftis, probably the oldest white woman in the state of South Carolina, died yesterday at the advanced age of 105 years. She lived with her son, Mr. James Loftis, in Bates Township, at whose home she breathed her last. Mrs. Loftis was born and raised among the mountains where she died. She was the Mother of six children, three of whom are still living. Her other children do not live in this immediate section of the country, but their exact residence could not be learned yesterday. "Aunt Sallie", as she was familiarly known, was a devoted member of the New Liberty Church. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock. According to a statement made by her son, who cited the ancient family Bible as his authority, Mrs. Loftis was born in the year 1806. A girl of six years of age when the "War of 1812" was waged. Mrs. Loftis could doubtless recall incidents in the history of the second struggle with England. Her husband, it is said, was killed in the Civil War.

I apologize for this late, late answer. If I did answer before I can't remember it. I imagine by now you have all the information you need but in case you don't, the 1840 census under Clement lists a male 20-29 which I assume is William R (that would make his birth in the years (1811-1820) much closer to your date than what I had in the query. I have the will of Clement which lists his children and the will of his father Robert. If you do not have them I will be glad to send them to you. My line is through John S. who ended up in Texas.
