Susan I am most interested in your Parks as I have had 32 spellings of our name. From Parks,Parcus,Parkes, Parkis etc. I have a David Pockrus born in SC about 1775 (probably Fairfield Dist) who is married to a Mary. They show up in 1800 census of Fairfield Co., SC, (Pockras); 1810 in Fairfield (Pockras);in 1818 he is in Madison Co., AL and Mary is head of HH in 1850. I have searched for them and every conceiveable spelling before 1800 to no avail. However I have not really searched the Parks, If you can shed a clue would be interested in exchaging notes. Otherwise if you will watch for any of the spellings I would appreciate it. From where did your people come into Fairfield Co., SC? Any help appreciated. I spent last week in Chester and Fairfield Counties visiting with some relatives and gathering data. I was advised to visit a Ms. D in Winnsboro to talk about genealogy. When I got to her house her mother 97 year old mother came over and through her arms around me. She said "I know you. You are Catheines boy.". Ms. D's mother is one of my 1st cousins once removed or something like that. I have updated my website which is at: http://www.hom.net/~caldwell/genology It was about 200 names. It is now over 600 names. I added a lot of data on the Gladden family. The data covers from about 1800 into the early 1900's. I also got a lot of data on the Dye family which has to connect to the Caldwells and Gladdens. So far I have not made the connection between that data and the Dyes I know so its not in my database. If someone needs the data let me know. If anyone has data on the Dyes let me know. Ms. D had a lot of information on the Caldwells that I needed but I did not get it this trip. I was prepared for some changes/additions but not for the volume she had. I was suppose to have a factory reconditioned lap top computer with me but it was not delivered in time for the trip. I will be back up in SC in a month or so. JohnC
Jacob Beasley (c. 1728-1773), Craven County, SC, left items in his will to daughters Catherine Yearling and Mary Yearling. They might have been from the Fairfield area. Is anyone tracing the Yearlings? I'm really stuck on this line. Thanks for any help you can give. Glenna

I am looking for any information on a Nicholas Black listed on your 1830 census. Who was he? Was he ever listed with James as part of his name? Did he come from England or Ireland? Did he go on to GA? Did he marry in SC? I have a ggrandfather who was born in SC about 1832 named Henry James/James Henry. His oldest son was named James Nicholas/Nicklas/Nichloes and was born in GA before moving to Montgomery Co, AR. I am at a dead end. The family story goes that my gggrandfather was a stow-away from England and came to SC. His family was from Ireland. James seems to be the predominant name even down every generation to my father. Do you have any knowledge of this Nicholas Black who lived in Fairfield Co? I have the CD for the census, but I have not been to a library to check the census. Thanks for any help you can give me. Here is another version of the Caldwell family origins. It fits what I know of one of the Cladwell families that came to Fairfield County and then to Chester County. Back when mother was a girl, she was born in 1912, someone came by collection names and dates. He left this: "Here follows some personal information; Sketch of John and Elizabeth (Huggins) Caldwell by John Andrew Caldwell, Atlanta, Ga. About the year 1400 three noted brothers, John, Alexander, and Oliver, distinguished for bravery and their knowledge of the sea, were employed by the merchants of Lisbon, Spain, to capture the pirates who were annoying and destroying their shipping on the Mediterranean. These three brothers captured and destroyed them and received $20,000.00 each from Francis I of France. These brothers lived at Mount Arid, near the boundary of France and Italy at Toulow. Here the religious persecutions of the Catholics against the Waldeneses and Hugenots forced them to migrate across the country to Solway, Scotland within the dominion of James I. They purchased a large tract of land and sent to Toulow for their families. On their land was a notably cold-well and from it originates the name. They became known as Alexander, John, and Oliver of Cold-well. Here the family lived and accumulated property and strength, and intermarried with the most powerful families and land owners. They became connected with the royal family and Queen Elizabeth was their staunch friend, and some of the Caldwells now possess as heir-looms, presents from her, with their own coat of arms. They were also connected with Oliver Cromwell, whose mother was Anne Caldwell of Solway. Oliver Cromwell, with his kinsmen, Joseph, John, Andrew, and, David Caldwell, moved to northern Ireland of which he was governor, or Lord, and was afterwards promoted to the Protectorate of England. These Caldwells remained here until the administration of Cromwell and after the restoration of Charles II, they and their families migrated to America, landing at Philadelphia or some point in Pennsylvania, and from thence to other parts of the newly settled country, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Kentucky. Their descendants are in every state of the Union. The coat of arms consists of three ships, twenty horsemen, a well with a man drawing water, and a light on a high hill. These represent incidents in the acquisition of their property, the requirement of their king, and their name. The light on the hill illustrates the constant watch they kept to warn their families of the approach of the persecutors." I have not been able to connect the author to what I have of our family tree. JohnC

This is some information on the KIRKLAND families of GRANVILLE Co, NC in the 1740's-1765 and KERSHAW Co/Chesterfield Co/CAMDEN Area of SC. Some KIRKLANDS are on the MILL's Atlas ,published 1820, in KERSHAW County. GEORGE & JOHN KIRKLAND are on the LYNCHE Creek and Joseph & William & also DANIEL,WILLIE, & WILLIAM are around that area north of CAMDEN on FLAT ROCK CREEK just east of the WATEREE River. I have some more research to do, but this information was gather by comparing the 1790, and 1800 Census and also with a 1778-79 tax list of that area. I think most of these people descended from JOHN KIRKLAND who died in 1773 in the CAMDEN area. If anyone else has any information pertaining to the Chesterfield/Camden/Fairfield/GRANVILLE NC Kirklands please email me. Thanks and will publish more as I uncover the information.
