1. [SCFAIRFI-L] CSA veteran
2. I am in need of assistance with a Civil War veteran. My gg-grf, Thomas Perry LIGON, is buried at Bethel church cemetery in Winnsboro. His marker lists "CSA". How can I learn what part he played in the Civil War? I am interested in finding his military company/division/group he served with, and any skirmishes he may have been involved with. I was told that the DAR may be able to help, but how can that group, associated with the Revolutionary War, assist me with a Civil War veteran? I am at a loss at to where to start searching. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks! Jonnie in SC

2. Kay Rockett
3. I'm looking for info on Elizabeth (Eve) COOPER who married a Mr. STONE, probably in Fairfield Co, SC in the late 1700's. She was born in the 1760's in Philadelphia, PA, so she would have married 1780 or later. She had a brother named Adam, and her parents were supposedly Peter and Margaret FRY COOPER of PA. After Peter died, Margaret remarried to Andrew FEASTER and they lived in Fairfield Co. I have a little info from a History of Fairfield Co, but I would appreciate any additional info on the COOPER family or on Elizabeth's children. Thanks!! *********************************** There are 2 new lists at Rootsweb: one for Virginia (VAROOTS-L) and one for the surname FRY/FREY/FREI/FRYE. 1. [SCFAIRFI-L] Cynthia SMITH b c1768 Camden, SC
2. Jim Crosslin
3. Greetings, I'm looking for information about Cynthia SMITH born c1768 in Camden area of South Carolina. Cynthia, at age 12, reportedly confronted British General Cornwallis about her pet cow stolen by his troops. According to family tradition, Cynthia SMITH at age 12 in 1780 confronted General Cornwalllis at his encampment near her home in Camden. The confrontation was about her pet cow which his troops had taken from her home. According to the story, Cynthia, incensed, pursed the troops and confronted Cornwallis. As the story goes, Cornwallis declared "you are a sturdy little rebel" and returned her cow and gave her a pair of silver knee buckles as a present. This story was published in 1929 by Dr John W Wayland, PhD, in "History Stories for Primary Grades". Family tradition states that British troops took Cynthia's cow after destroying the family plantation, store, grist mill and cotton gin which was located in the Camden area. Cynthia SMITH married Thomas CARTER c1795 in Camden, South Carolina. They removed to North Carolina a few years later. After her husband Thomas died in North Carolina, Cynthia and children removed to Pennsylvania, then to New Harmony, Indiana and finally to Jefferson Co, Illinois. Cynthia was my G-g-g-grandmother. 3. I'm working on the ARLEDGE family (aka ALDRIDGE) of Fairfield, Kershaw and Edgefield Counties. Several brothers (William, Isaac, John) settled in the area in the mid-1700s, and their children and grandchildren were populous in SC through the 19th century. Could any of you who might have any information or documents pertaining to anyone with either of these surnames (or the thousands of mispelled variations!) please let me know? I still have so many loose ends of unconnected Arledge lines in SC around 1800, and would love to find ways to piece this puzzle together! 3. Seeking information on my great-great grandparents, William and Susannah Gunnell, who were in Fairfield County, SC, in 1850, 1860, and 1870 census. William was born in Virginia and Susannah ? was born in Fairfield County as were all of their children: Minerva, Elizabeth, Joe, William (ones that I know). They must be buried there somewhere. Anyone with any information on this family, please contact me. I sure would appreciate it. The child, William was my great-grandfather and he settled in Mecklenburg County, NC, but I think most of the other stayed in SC, so there must be descendants there. Hope to hear from someone soon! There is a wonderful website which contains the email addresses for people who have volunteered to get copies of documents for anyone who requests a specific document from a specific place (selections are shown at volunteer's listing). It is set up by state, then by county, etc.. It also contains email addresses for those who have volunteered to do look-ups in certain surname books or DAR Indexes. Here is the hyperlink & URL : Genie Angels http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/6878/#icq Sadly, some states / counties do not have volunteers yet, but many do.
