    1. [SCFAIRFI-L] Fairfield Marriage book lookups---PLEASE READ!!
    2. Peggy Calk
    3. For those of you who have asked for look ups in Fairfield County Marriages, I think I need to explain that the book is NOT a list of marriage records or dates of marriages. It is marriages IMPLIED in Probate Records. Excerpts from the introduction of the book by Barbara R. Langdon states: "Please note that this book contains evidence of marriages; it is not a collection of marriage records. Marriages were not recorded in South Carolina until the twentieth century. Proof or verication is left to the user of this book. ....the man or woman is followed by the spouse, the apartment and file numbers of the estate packet in which the reference is found, microfilm frame numbers and the year one or both were living...." *NS=new series ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peggy Hall Calk [email protected] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    1. [SCFAIRFI-L] lI'm not resigning genealogy, only history
    2. Debbie Fowler
    3. Morning everyone! I got up today just in time to greet a box full of email messages responding to my resignation from ALHN. Many have written of their concern that I have resigned from ALHN, many said they have also heard on the news, CNN, that the phone companies are trying to get this bill passed so they can implement their charges for internet access, many have stated, "If you leave, then I will too". I just want to say, that I am not leaving genealogy, only the history project that is called ALHN. All of the counties and projects in my signature, I am still a part of, and plan to continue to contribute what I can to them. Burke, Lincoln, Rutherford, NC Revolutionary War, and of course NCGenWeb. It was only history I gave up. And ALHN did not have anything to do with that decision. It is an excellent project and will be a great asset to your study of genealogy. You can understand and know so much more abut your ancestors when you know what the times were like for them. It just so happened that all of you were on my mail list and I felt that we all needed to know just what the phone company was trying to do [again] It was tried 2 years ago too. Yesterday, when I saw that the reply from Joel, was sent to everyone on my private email addresses and not just to the me privately or the list he got it from, I simply could not stand there and let him get away with it..I felt slapped in the face by him, again. I apologize for the fact you all were involved and just wanted you to know that genealogy has not lost me because of this incident with Joel. Only the project that Joel and I were a part of together, the history project All of the projects named in my signature, are the ones I will continue being involved with....esp the grandma part<G> Thanks for all the encouraging words! 3. Molly Thank you! I think that information about these families will really help with research in Fairfield Co. These names seem to infer that they lived in both Midway, Liberty Co and Winnsboro, Fairfield Co., perhaps moving when their families increased in size to take advantage of new lands opening up! Would really like to know the information in the epitaph of Capt Thomas Baker buried at Midway Cemetery. John Quarterman has written a book about his family, but I do not know if he included any information about the Bacons and Winns. I have traced Jacob Brown's father, Major Jacob Brown to Greene Co, TN. He purchased thousands of acres of land from the Cherokees and sold it to settlers from NC, SC, VA and GA. His grave is a historical site in Greene Co, TN. Thanks again! Elizabeth

    3. Hi Everyone, I just wanted to say that I am resigning from ALHN completely. Several weeks ago, one of my volunteers for GA was REMOVED from the ALHN list for submitting history articles to the ALHN list. One and only ONE, person on ALHN objected to their posting and slammed them publicly for it......There were many others, who wrote to state they liked the articles and wanted to see more. I asked Mary and Jeff for a new list, where these articles could be posted. No list was forthcoming. I was later told by Mary that the new ALHN_L list could be used for this purpose and an announcement would be made that this would be an appropriate place for posting history articles. No announcement was made that I have ever seen. Since that time. the person who was derogatory to my volunteer who was posting history articles on the ALHN list, has continued to daily use the ALHN list and post many of his "my 2 cents worth " opinions. My volunteer was the only person punished, and he never responded to Joel publicly at all. All he ever said was, he would continue to post the articles on history...southern black history that Joel did not like. Today, Joel posted another......to my announcement regarding the proposal of long distance charges on internet phone lines with..... "One word: HOAX. (And an old one, too!) 3. Molly Thank you for the "look-ups" in "Fairfield Co Cemeteries". Thomas died in 1789 in a duel with Jacob Brown. Sarah, his wife died in 1782. He may be buried in Midway Cemetery in Liberty Co, GA. There is a Capt Thomas Baker buried there. Also, I was in error about the place of marriage. The marriage of a Thomas Baker and Sarah Bacon in 1778 occurred in Liberty Co, GA., not in SC. Appreciate your help. Elizabeth

    3. >From some researchers, I was told that Thomas GOODRUM (Thomas Goodrum, d. 7 Apr 1836, ca. 84 yrs of age. Revolutionary War Soldier served from Orangeburg, SC., died in Maury Co., TN) was married to Agnes AGNEW GLADDEN, the widow of William GLADDEN, and had children, 1. William Gladden 2. Martha Gladden who married John HALL. Their son was Mansel Hall. By Thomas GOODRUM, she had the following: 1. Sebra Goodrum who married William PORTER 2. Mildren Goodrum who married Richard TIDWELL. (Richard Tidwell, 28 Nov 1774 - 20 Jun 1863 in Maury Co., TN) I am a descendant of Sebra GOODRUM and WILLIAM PORTER. I asked the question, if Sebra's mother had been Agnes AGNEW GLADDEN, why were none of her descendants named AGNES, since other family names have often repeated themselves in later generations. One answer I got was the following: Good question. That's why I asked if Thomas Goodrum might not have married Elizabeth Hollis Gladden instead of Agnes Agnew Gladden. I don't know where the information came from in the first place and have been trying very hard to find some verification. According to some abstracts I've seen, Samuel Gladden was married to an Agnes, but his will was 1799, after Sebra Goodrum was born. That's the only Agnes Gladden I've found, so far. The only Agnes Agnew I found was married to James Dunn. I realize this does not mean there was not another Agnes Agnew, but I do not find her in the Fairfield county or Abbeville county records I have. Does anyone have any information on any members of this family? [email protected] http://www.geocities.com/heartland/ridge/3462/

    1. [SCFAIRFI-L] Croskeys/McCants -- Fairfield County SC
    2. I have recently come across some data that suggests the CROSKEYS family might have a connection with the McCANTS family of Fairfield County. Is anyone doing a study of the Croskeys? I have a BIG mystery that you might be able to help me solve. Thanks in advance, Glenna
