    3. The State Archives in Columbia has the originals--the Archives has the ability to ensure temperature and humidity control for a vast storage collection. However, except in rare instances, don't expect to see the originals, just microfilm, but you'll find that the microfilm sometimes differs from the WPA copies, so it's worth the look. Years ago when the Archives was still in downtown Columbia, the original documents were available. I can't tell you what a thrill it was to see my fourth g'grandfather's will, written in his own hand and signed by him in 1805. Even more remarkable, was that in lieu of a seal, he used his thumbprint below his signature. 3. The Archives in Columbia will have the original. And it is very important to look at the original. Other papers will be associated with it -- estate inventory and settlements. Plus the transcripts contain mistakes. For example, one transcript had commas between the first and middle name of each child, making it look like there were 6 children when there were actually three. 3. Mostly it depends on the year. Most counties sent their early years original records to Columbia, SC, State Archives and History. It also depends to some extent on the county. Some SC counties sent their early original records to the SC State Archive and History, some did not. As I understand it, it was the counties' choice and not required by the State. I'm not sure about Fairfield Co., SC, but I think that county sent their early original to Columbia, SC. My point is, you will need to check with the county. There is no one set rule that covers all SC counties. John B. 1. Meador and Mahon
    2. Ann Hill
    3. I am researching these two surnames. These families were in Fairfield from the early 1800's through 1900+. I am specifically interested in one Rev. John D. Mahon who was a Baptist minister. He married first Rebecca Durham Shedd. Married 2nd Jemima Crosby. Had dau Minnie who married Lemuel Meador (not the one below) and then married his brother William Meador. Then she married a Dr. Roach (first name unknown) Also interested in Lemuel Meador who died in the county in July 23, 1917. If anyone lives in Fairfield District and could get a copy of the death certificate I really appreciate it. Or an obituary would help. Other Meador names: William M. and John Any help would be appreciated.

    2. Thank you Rob! After I got the beautiful photo from Martha and saw that the proper name of the cemetery is Sion Presbyterian, I did a map search, and find it exactly where you said! I had never seen that name for the cemetery.........all the references to it in obits and death certificates just call it 'Presbyterian Cemetery'. So it was quite exciting to learn the exact name and be able to look it up! I will be going there sometime in the next few weeks to photograph graves of relatives. This group is wonderful!
