    2. Joan Marie
    3. Thank you all for responding to my query about map locations. I am surprised though that no one has told me about the map I use, which is invaluable as far as I am concerned. What I was after primarily was one that gave specific plat locations and it turns out that the one by the Union County Historical Foundation is the best for that. Thank you for suggesting that. What I use for general purposes is the DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer and it has what I want probably 95% of the time. It is a topographic map, large format like a Rand McNally atlas, and they are published for every state. I have 6 or so for the states I have the most people in and photocopy the appropriate part of pages for many purposes so that I can mark them up. They are probably $18 or $20 now - I've had mine for years. Look for the one of your our own state in a bookstore to see what they are like. Joan Marie

    3. Maps 2 & 7 in the Union County Atlas of land grants cover areas in the NW part of Fairfield Co, SC, all north of my area of interest (the southwest corner in the fork of the Broad and the Little Rivers and Jenkinsville areas), but certainly in areas that should interest you. The Pearsons were everywhere! John Pearson is on Map 2, 370 acres, 1785 Philip Pearson is on Map 7, 457 acres, 1759 (Methodist Minister) On the north side of Wilkinsons Creek, near Dawkins, not too far east of the Broad. 3. Linda, Thanks for responding. Actually I need a real early map (late 1700's) which shows land owners - awfully hard to find. Those Sanborn maps are great fun though - I do historical research at our local library identifying old photographs and use them all the time to identify when buildings were built. I love to do "then and now" research showing what it looked like 100 years ago and now. 3. Check out this link. http://www.rootsweb.com/~scfairfi/mouzon.html When this map loads, move it all the way to the right of screen. Now look about the middle and lower part of screen & you can see the Sandy Creek off the Broad, as you trace the Broad towards bottom of the part of screen showing. Maybe the "Cool Branch" is one of the forks unlabeled up toward the top end of the Sandy Creek? I also spotted one "Beaver Creek" branching downward from the Broad...as you move map all the way to the right of screen & follow the Broad River down until you see the word "ORANGEBURG" You will see the Beaver Creek right about where the "U" is in Orangeburg. 3. Looking at the 1820 Fairfield Co Map in the Mills atlas, Cool Branch of Sandy River is in the most north west corner of Fairfield Co. (far upper left, almost at Chester Co) You can see this map at: http://www.davidrumsey.com/maps860030-23863.html You can also find McClure's Fork, a branch of Beaver Creek flowing into the Broad, a little south of there. Still in the upper Northwest part of the county. 3. I need to find an estate or will for William Hughes. He was there in 1795 for sure because he was made guardian for 2 kids, may be even took them as apprentices. I think he died there around 1800. Included in his heirs would have been Robert Hughes, Thomas Hughes, Raleigh Hughes. Possibly a Tabithia Hughes is also among the kin. She would have been younger than 21 in 1795. I know they were all there in Fairfield Co. Also among the kin were the Shannons and Knowlands, also Nowlin, Noland, and other variations. If somebody can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. What sort of records are available and how complete and easy to search are they? I know they were gone before 1810. 3. Hi, Cheryl. Among your family members of Richard GIBBS is there a William H. GIBBS (1790?-aft1830) who married abt 1822, Louisa Maria HENDRICK, (1796?- aft 1830?), the widow of Michael J. RUDULPH, Jr. (1792-1821), of Richland District, SC? She was the daughter of Dr. Robert HENDRICK (1760?-Bef 1805) and Mary DANIELL/L (1765-Abt 1797) of Richland District. Louisa is a great-granddaughter of William and Frances O'DANIEL of Stafford County, Virginia. William H. and Louisa GIBBS went to Lowndes County, Alabama before 1830 when they are enumerated as William H. GIBBS - - 1 - 1 1 1 - - - - - - | - - - 1 1 - 1* - - - - *This 1 may be a spurious mark, a faint entry. The column total 7 or 8 is not clear, but if 7, as thought, there is no female 40-50. RLD If anyone knows where they went, I'd happily send them an invitation to Thanksgiving dinner. I would ask Louisa who her grandparents were and about all of her recollections of the DANIEL/LL families who came from Fairfax County, Virginia to Old 96 and Camden districts between 1750 and 1790. If Louisa has their address, I'd invite William O'DANIEL (1720?-1797) of Kershaw, James DANIELL (1721-1798, Hancock County, Ga.) of Fairfield/Richland, and their nephew, William DANIEL (1747-1807) and his wife, Lucretia BELL (1757-1822), of Edgefield as well. 3. Robert Daniel, Can you tell me more about your Edgefield County Bells? I descend from Samuel Bell (b. 1781 SC) and his wife Margaret Holliday (b. 1790, daughter of William & Sarah Henderson) of Cuffeetown Creek area. I do not know Samuel's origins. He joined the Holliday family when he wed and the only Bells he seems to show up with are his sons, Bluford, James, William, and Charles Newton Bell. There is some thought that his parents may have been born in Ireland.
