    3. Unless someone has church records/wills/deeds it is going to be hard for you to find a marriage record in SC. They did not have licenses or marriage bonds. A real pain.!! 3. Dear Jeremy, I don't know how common the name Brock is, but my first Fairfield Co, SC ancestor was John Dunkley who was born about 1720, moved to Rowan Co, NC around 1750 and to Fairfield Co, SC about 1771. He had jury duty in 1767 in Rowan Co, NC with an Elias Brock. I note an Elias Brock started appearing in Fairfield County records about the same time as John Dunkley did. Perhaps they migrated together. My Longs of Fairfield County moved to Limestone Co, AL in 1818 and then to Fayette Co, TN around 1833. Again, that isn't very helpful to you, but I find the similarity in migration from Fairfield Co, SC to Limestone Co AL interesting. I made an excel file of Brocks in the SC Archives database and was going to attach it, but this email is going out to rootsweb and would be rejected. If you want to email me direct I'll send it to you. Laban is in one of the records in the database, but without at date: JOHNSTON, JAMES, CAPTAIN OF THE FAIRFIELD REPUBLICAN ARTILLERY, PETITION ASKING COMPENSATION FOR REPAIRS ORDERED BY HIS PREDECESSOR, CAPT. BARBER, ON THE GUN CARRIAGES COMPLETED BY JOHN CAMBELL AND LABAN BROCK. The first census he shows up in as head of household is Fairfield in 1820. However, muster and pay rolls for the War of 1812 put him in Kershaw district as early as 1814. He served in Capt Chapman Levy's company in Col Adam McWillie's 2nd Regt of the SC Militia. His father is unknown but could possibly be Christopher Brock who shows up in Fairfield in 1800. My doubt of this is growing. Laban and family are also in Fairfield in 1830 and by 1840 are in Limestone county Alabama. There is also a document referenced in the SC Archives online mentioning a Laban Brock helping to repair gun carriages for the Fairfield Republican Artillery. There is no date but I have found no other Laban Brock in SC. My family believes we are of German and Cherokee descent and that our name used to be spelled Brach. I know of no provable connection to Frederick Brock/Brack. However, it possible that I am descended from him or some relative of the Hans Michel and Rudolph Brack/Brock line. There is also a, Valentine, descendant of Johann Valentine Brack/Brock of NC and Chesterfield co SC that is another possible ancestor of Laban. It seems very likely since Kershaw is only one county south of Chesterfield. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 3. Hi Delbra and Warren, First of all, Delbra, I think you must have cc'd me to an old e-mail address because I didn't get copies of this exchange from you. When I travel I usually don't unsubscribe to the lists I belong to, but it takes me a really long time to get through all the stacked up messages. In early June I was in Alabama, first attending the IGHR at Samford Univ in B'ham, then in Mobile for a week visiting family, then four days in Pike County just doing cemetery searching. (I haven't been back to Pike since we were all there together.) Warren, from your reply to Delbra it sounds as if you have more than one Smith family in the area. So do I! Please let me know what you have on your Smiths.I really hope the three of us can help each other to unscramble some more of this. The Smith line from Fairfield Co. is my maternal grandmother's line; my maternal grandfather was also a Smith. His name was Robert Walter Smith, b. Montgomery, AL 1885. His father was Robert William Smith, b. Orangeburg, SC 1847. His father was Peter Walter Smith b. 16 Oct 1820 in Orangeburg District, SC. The good news is that I will be spending a few days in the Columbia, SC area (Fairfield Co. is just nextdoor, also Orangeburg and Lexington Co. (where I have Saunders and Lees). First I will be on Fripp Island (SC) vacationing for a week with my family (I'm leaving here on July 20). I will arrive in Columbia on July 29 and have about three days to research. I will get the Smith wills that Delbra and I need, and of course, anything else that I can find that pertains to our research. Let me know if there is anything specific that either of you want. Warren, the Bobby Gilmer Moss book, "Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution" does not have Hugh Smith listed (the book does have a Hugh Smith listed as a fifer but I doubt whether this is the father of Robert Smith born in 1760). The same book does not have that Hugh Smith as having a Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application. I think fifers were usually very young but I certainly could be wrong on this. I found Robert Smith b. 1760 in Ireland in the "History of Butts County Georgia" where there are about four pages of his descent. If either of you do not have these descendants I can send them to you later (but, please remind me). Guess this is all for now. 2. Warren, based on the information I have, It truly sounds like they are the same men. Do you have documentation supporting this information and if it is online can you tell me how I can acquire it as well? I am especially interested in the wills of Hugh and David. 3. The best source I've found for finding plat locations isn't a map. It's the USGS Geographical Names Information Service (GNIS). http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=162:1:1823341289446124506 While it doesn't locate specific plat locations, it will locate the streams and other historical geographical information mentioned in plats.
