Anyone doing research on Miles? Trying to connect several Miles families in different counties, (Fairfield, Sumter, Darlington, Clarendon)
Welcome Ruth to the Fairfield list! I am searching for info, and specifically the grave sites for my ancestors, Thomas ANDERSON b 1832 in MD d 1877 and wife Nancy Jane RICHARDSON b 1836 in SC d 1884. They lived in the Simpson Community of Fairfield County and had three sons born there. I have found wife Nancy in the 1880 census with two youngest sons. Have good info on those two sons, James Reuben Anderson (my line) and Joel Thomas Anderson. The eldest son, Samuel John Anderson, never married and lived most of his life in New York City. When he died in 1933 he was brought home for burial at Richardson Family Cemetery in Simpson. Does anyone know where that is? Perhaps the parents were also buried there? Thanks everyone! Jonnie in SC
Hi everyone I have just adopted a few mailing lists at Rootsweb, SCFairfi-l is one of those. I just want to invite everyone to post their queries to the list. A quiet list doesn't help anyone! ;-) A few list guidelines: 1. Don't *flame* anyone. Basically, this just means be nice. If someone is rude through the list, they'll be removed. 2. If you don't like what someone posted through the list, do not respond to the list. Chances are, we won't like your reponse either. Rest assured, I am watching the list and will take the necessary steps when any OT mail or spam is sent. 3. No off-topic posts. 4. Post your queries to the list!!! If we don't post, no one will benefit. I hope everyone will begin to use this list to find their ancestors! Ruth rosemunda@earthlink.net
yes you are.

According to Snopes this is an April Fool prank which was first done in 1993 by Taco Bell. For more information the url is: http://www.snopes.com/holidays/april/pranks.asp In a message dated 3/30/2004 4:17:23 PM Eastern Standard Time, wclathan@wclathan.com writes: A Washington Times news article stated that cash strapped U.S. Park Service, a division of the Dept. of the Interior has been seeking corporate sponsors for several National Parks and Monuments that are suffering from maintenance short falls. Of particular interest is Liberty Park in Philadelphia, PA. This park is made up of a number of colonial era buildings that are in dire need of repair. An example of these buildings is Independence Hall which has a serious need for major roof repairs and window glazing. The condition of the roof has been allowed to deteriorate to the point that whereas a few years ago it needed new shingles, today the sub-roofing and many of the roof joists will need to be replace. Taco Bell has volunteered over $140m to finance the project with the stipulation that the building that houses the Liberty Bell and the Liberty Bell itself be renamed similarly to the way professional sports venues are named for their corporate sponsors. Starting in 2006 the area around the bell will be called, Liberty Taco Bell Park and the bell itself will be renamed the Liberty Taco Bell. This was an "April Fools" "Joke" hoax story that resurfaces every year.... see http://www.ushistory.org/libertybell/bellhoax.html or http://humor.about.com/library/ds/blds040103.htm?terms=Liberty+Bell+Taco LIBERTY BELL HOAX ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- From The New York Times, section A, page 13, Monday, April 1, 1996 HEADLINE: Taco Bell Buys the Liberty Bell In an effort to help the national debt, Taco Bell is pleased to announce that we have agreed to purchase the Liberty Bell, one of our country's most historic treasures. It will now be called the "Taco Liberty Bell" and will still be accessible to the American public for viewing. While some may find this controversial, we hope our move will prompt other corporations to take similar action to do their part to reduce the country's debt. Some people found this hoax mean-spirited and very unpatriotic. Some felt it was funny. Some didn't realize the date and took it seriously. http://humor.about.com/library/ds/blds040103.htm?terms=Liberty+Bell+Taco Top 100 April Fools Day Hoaxes of All Time - April Fools Day Pranks and Stunts The Top 100 April Fools Hoaxes of All Time as compiled and detailed by The Museum of Hoaxes The Taco Liberty Bell ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Lathan" <wclathan@wclathan.com> To: <SCFAIRFI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 30, 2004 3:15 PM Subject: [SCFAIRFI-L] Selling out our history > A Washington Times news article stated that cash strapped U.S. Park Service, > a division of the Dept. of the Interior has been seeking corporate sponsors > for several National Parks and Monuments that are suffering from maintenance > short falls. The data listed on this page is more or less the same as the old page. However, I have been learning more about HTML and the use of tables to keep things organized on the pages. Previously, the biographical data page for William James Lathan, my Great Grandfather was difficult to read. This was especially true of his probate data. Hopefully the table format will make it easier to see how probate went back in the '20s. There is no doubt that the judge and attorneys did nicely in regard to the size of the estate... nothing changes. Here's a link to the new version which leaves better margins and an easier probate to read (the probate is near the bottom of the page): http://www.wclathan.com/biographies/lathan/william_james_lathan.htm ******************************** William C. I notice that one of the lines you are researching is Cooper. I am looking for a Miss Cooper who married a Smith probably around 1865 in the Chester/York/Fairfield/Union counties area. I have two versions of Smith's first name -- one is Miles and the other is John. They had at least four children: Cora born about 1868; Elizabeth (Lizzie) born about 1870; Walter and Clyde (birthdates unknown). Does this match up with anything in your line? Thanks, James Nicholson JNich57@aol.com
Thank you everyone for the quick response and suggestions! You all have been very helpful! All the best, Dawn SC: BRUNSON; COOK; COOPER; GEORGE; NELSON & STEWART.
I note on the Fairfield County website that "....Some prominent residents of the county were Regulator leader Thomas Woodward (d. 1799), Revolutionary War soldier Richard Winn (1750-1818), and artist Laura Glenn Douglas (1886-1962)." I am interested in learning more about this Laura Glenn Douglas. There is a strong possibility that one of my ancestors was a Douglas before she married a Curlee, all of Fairfield County. Is there a family tree for Laura Glenn Douglas posted somewhere? Or are there members here who are connected the DOUGLAS family? Thanks if you can assist! Jonnie H. Britton
Hello Melinda! Thanks for posting this valuable information. I note that your name is Crowder. I am wondering if you are related to James Edward Crowder Jr (b 1918, d 1945 in WWII) of Fairfield County? He was married to my Daddy's first cousin (once removed), Alice Ligon, and they had a son, J. E. "Bo" Crowder III, b 1942. Alice remarried and was again widowed and still resides in the Winnsboro area. I also see that you are a member of the UDC. I am hoping to learn more about your local UDC in hopes of finding other relatives to exchange info. I don't have any idea how and who to ask questions of to learn of membership rosters, etc. Or if an 'outsider' like me would be able to gain such info. My father was a member of the SCV but I have not been able to find anyone willing to assist with lookups, etc in old membership lists, so possibly these type requests are frowned upon. It runs into the Broad River just below Lyles Ford. Beaver Creek Church is also located in the North West part of Fairfield. If you are headed North on highway 215 when one reaches Salem Cross roads the T junction for highway 215 and highway 34, head north on highway #215. When you reach a fork in highway 215 Follow the road that forks right going north, it looks like road #18.
