    3. Hi Larue, I am descended from Robert Love, through his daughter Sarah, who married Robert Barnett 1754-1827, Revolutionary War veteran.  Robert died in Wilkinson Co Ga. His son Isaac Barnett married Clarissa Clark, and their daughter AnnaBelle was my 2nd ggm. So yes, very distant cousins. Anita-------- Original message --------From: lfoster@earthlink.net Date: 9/23/2018 2:36 PM (GMT-06:00) To: scfairfi@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCFAIRFI] Re: Please post this notice Hi Anita, Magdalen Love was the daughter of Robert Love (her mother was possibly Mary Davison, but that's not proved. Her grandfather was William Love (d. 1793) of Lunenburg County VA, where he purchased property in 1749 when the county was formed. Somewhere, but not among my books, is the heritage of William Love, who was technically of Scotch-Irish descent. His ancestor had migrated there with the promise of land from the British crown and like many became disillusioned with the king's unfulfilled promises and moved back to Glasgow, so Magdalen's heritage is Scottish. She had an elder sister, Louisa, who married William Barnett, a soldier in the Revolution. William Love had a large family, and three of his sons, Hezekiah Love, Isaac and Jacob Love (twins) all moved to Fairfield County SC. When Isaac Love died, he left the guardianship of his daughter Martha to Magdalen, and her husband William Gardner Ford posted the guardianship bond. It's my understanding that Martha died in her teens whil e on a trip to visit her grandfather William Love in Virginia. One of Martha's brothers, named William for his grandfather, married one of Magdalen and William Gardner's daughters, MaryAnn Ford. William died young. If you like, I can look up their children. If you're descended through this same line, we must be cousins. Please write back and let me know if this squares with information you have on the family. The Love family came to America very early, about 1720 or sooner. 3. Several months ago, I was able to copy three Morris bible pages from ebay ( thanks to a heads up from another genealogist) that contained information about one of my ancestor's brothers Kellis Nevitt. This Morris family includes John Morris(1767-1823) and his wife Mary Hancock Morris ( 1777-1837) and their children of Fairfield Co. SC. Some of it is hard to read but it contains births, deaths, and marriages. I found out that Kellis Nevitt married their oldest daughter Lucy Morris in 1822 and Kellis died in 1828. Lucy Morris married second James Beard after 1828 so she could not be the mother of most of his children. All of the genealogies that I have seen have Lucy as the mother of those children but James must have had a first wife. I'll be glad to share information with anyone interested.                      Susan Johanson -- Susan C. Johanson, Haymarket, VA Searching for footprints in the sands of time

    3. Hi Lance, Exactly as you think, there are a multitude of reasons you might not find your Jessie and his mother on the census. I am white, and I have a line that it took years to locate on censuses, because of errors and a group of houses that were skipped over completely. Add to that spelling of names, and possibly more than one surname, as your Jessie, and it is compounded. It is really sad when people will not talk about their family history. Sometimes there are reasons; but a lot of the older generation doesn't like to look back on bad times. I served as Director of Education for the Dallas Genealogical Society for 3 1/2 of the past 5 years. During that time, I worked with a librarian who is African-American. She is now a nationally known speaker and her expertise is, as you can guess, research back to and even into antebellum period using plantation records. There are big sets of them on microfilm - one is at University of North Carolina, and another is in Dallas at SMU. There are others; can't think of them right at the moment. Hi Lance, I have only personally researched 1 African-American family. He was born about 1930, and died years ago. He married into my husband's family and someone told me that they thought he had Native American ancestry. I wanted to research that, because I'd never worked with NA records before. I had his parents names and found his grandparent, and 6 of his 8 great-grandparents. I also found that the entire family was "black" or "mulatto" before 1900. Somewhere between 1900 and 1910, they started passing...! (Probably where the "Native American" story came from.) I got a few of his lines back to 1870, and stopped there, but I may continue one of these days, as I know where they were at war's end, and I would like to work with plantation records just to build my own skills. Right now I am working with genealogical DNA, and it's like drinking from a firehouse ???? Black genealogy in America is hard, but don't give up. If you like in a city with a genealogy society, see if they have a special interest group. Our society has an AA sig that meets every month and they are really, really good! Look for "how to" articles, too. If you are around St. Louis County, Missouri, they have a great collection of African American research materials at the main library in Clayton Missouri. A Black news anchor decided to research his family. He got them back to slavery and then he donated all his materials to the library, and encouraged many other St. Louisans to donate money for the purpose of increasing reference materaials dealing with African American research needs. They also hold the entire National Genealogical Society colletion. I am going to attach two web pages. One talks about Ari's presentation at the National Genealogical Society that I heard in 2017 (it was amazing). And has some links to related speeches. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__conference.ngsgenealogy.org_southern-2Dantebellum-2Dplantation-2Drecords-2Dregional-2Dmovement_&d=DwIFaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=UQ-Z5mIkXzoRkcE3Si3-bxmOWHOf_PMNCNR1f1RT9co&m=7W4SflR_eZXOmAa67NExKquo8hp7BJ5nUqZsOmnWXZQ&s=0nkS8cQqr1lOrDY7ZbhiH3Jm4ivt6yg_tdvfP8a7KSM&e= The other is Ari's professional website, Black Genesis. She and her partner are professional genealogists, but her partner, James P. Rhose, PHd, was a research consultant to Alex Haley on a project that was a forerunner of Alex Haley's "Roots." He has written a book, "Black Genesis," that I have not yet read, but it looks like a methodology for conducting African-American genealogical research. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.blackgenesis.com_&d=DwIFaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=UQ-Z5mIkXzoRkcE3Si3-bxmOWHOf_PMNCNR1f1RT9co&m=7W4SflR_eZXOmAa67NExKquo8hp7BJ5nUqZsOmnWXZQ&s=gXbcHNCLl8au1CDub_cDM4bpfmlw5gZaayVYXjEZzVk&e= I will keep an eye out for Magnolia and Jessie, as I am working in Fairfield records during that time period. Most of all I wish you motivation and good luck! Cheryl Freeman cheryl.w.freeman@gmail.com -----Original Message----- From: Lance L. She seems to be somewhat of an enigma. Jessie's second marriage was to Ida May JACKSON, they married 20 Oct 1952 in Bexar Co, Texas. He is buried at the National Cemetery in San Antonio. If someone is alive that may know something, they are saying. My Son-in-law's father will not speak of it. Not to me or his children. The only solution on that side of the family is to not talk about family. The best I ever got out of the man was that you can only go back 4 to 5 generations on a black family. Little that he knows I have found every member of his ancestry going back to or prior to the Civil War, some 8 generations, except for Jessie GOINES. The only one who wants to about their family is is daughter and one son. His solution is to shut them out. Really sad...No accounting family dynamics...One man that might know some information is an Ennis FREEMAN, a Watermelon farmer in I believe in Hawkins, TX. He has not responded to my queries. He was married to Helen Jo Anne GOINES, daughter to Jessie GOINES. Her whereabouts is unknown. 1. [SCFAIRFI] Re: Jessie GOINES b: ~1914
    2. Cheryl, I think you sent this email to me by mistake. I'm definitely interested in genealogy in Fairfield South Carolina; my family lived there in the late colonial period and until the 1830s. However, the info on Jesse Goines doesn't ring a bell, and my name is LaRue, not Lance. I thought you'd want to know that your email reached the wrong person. Sounds like you're doing excellent research. 1. [SCFAIRFI] Jessie GOINES b: ~1914

    3. Dear Cheryl, Thanks for the information...I find the Philippine Scout of high interest. When I was stationed in the Philippines the old-timers there told me stories about African-American operatives there during the Japanese occupation. They would hide out in the hills with the resistance, then posse as Filipinos and gather information for the Allied Forces. Japanese never seeing a black man before thought they were Filipinos. The Old-timers said they were some of the bravest men they ever saw. Regards, Lance

    3. Dear Cheryl, It appears that Jessie GOINES as well as his mother seems to have avoided every census; but maybe that is because we do not know by which names they or the census takers used, whether or not Magnolia ever married. 3. Dear William, SSA has a 120 year rule. I had to prove that his parents were dead or were over 120 years old. Since I didn't know who his parents were, I could not prove they were dead. I used census bureau data stating the oldest person in America was 114 years old. If Jessie GOINES was born in 1914 then his parents, if still alive, would have been 8 years old at time of his birth. They finally agreed. The federal government does have a direct relationship rule for FOIA requests. After digging through the census records, I think the father maybe one of the sons of Robert TOATLEY of White Oak. The family belonged to the Presbyterian Church there. I haven't found a Magnolia GOINS, but see there are some GOINES there. Maybe she went by Maggie. Does Fairfield County have birth records prior to 1915? I am looking into the DNA option as well. 3. I hope someone can answer this question for me. Where is Old Simpson Baptist Church Cemetery in Fairfield County (SC)? I have been told that Wlm. B. Dunlap (1812-1885) and his wife Mary Jane Richardson (ca 1808-1896) are buried there. But I am unable to find this cemetery on FindaGrave.com. I am also wondering who else is buried there. Their daughter, Josephine Dunlap (1849-1906), is buried at Richardson Cemetery in Fairfield County (that cemetery is on FindaGrave). I am trying to find the death date and burial of her husband, Charles Samuel Porter (b. 1845), son of Rev. Charles M. Porter and M. Emily Avaline McCants Porter. Does anyone have any clues to this cemetery or to Chs. Samuel Porter? Unfortunately my cousin in Chester who did a bunch of research on the Beam family of Union says he doesn't have any Cecil Ray Beam in his files and hasn't communicated with him and doesn't know him. I add that both he and I have beaten our heads against the wall trying to delve deeper into the Beam family. My Great-Grandmother was a Beam from Union. We have her parentage thanks to marriage records but moving backwards from them has been a very frustrating chore with little reward. I wish you LOTS more success than what we had. 3. I have a cousin who lives in Chester. He's not young and has Parkinson's so I try to not burden him with small talk. He and I are related to the Beam family of Union. He and I did some searching for information a few years ago. I think he did mostly original research of existent courthouse and church records but he may have had some family contact. Due to the elapsed time and his and my lack of success on the subject he may have not kept up with any Beam people he met and... if he did correspond with Cecil Ray Beam the address he used may be out of date but I'll drop him a line and see what he says. Feaster Porter (Max) Coleman (1869-1951) In past years I corresponded with Cecil Ray Beam, James W. Green III and Wes Coleman, but have lost track of their current email addresses. Does anyone perhaps have a current address for any or all of these gentlemen? Thanks, Glenna Kinard PS...one thing I need help on Charles(?)
