I am seeking information on the several Roberson/Robertson families of the following probate records copied/extracted a couple of months ago at the SC State Archives from the Edgefield Co. Probate Records on the LDS microfilms of Edgefield Records. I am just beginning my Robertson research and need to see how folks fit. I am looking for a Harriett Robertson, named as the mother of Mary Ann Coursey Arthur in her 1915 death cert., Augusta Ga. I believe her to be the possible first wife on my ggg-grandfather Ewell/Uel Coursey. I have more Robertson probate box/package numbers to research, so if anyone has other probate records, it would help if I had them and would save me time. Hope someone out there already has done many of the Robertsons of Old Edgefield Dist, SC/Maybe even in Abbeville. Sarah Robertson applied for letter of adm 23 Oct 1815 Letter of adm. issued to Sarah Robertson, March 15, 1816 Within the adm. The following Robertsons were listed, as RoberTsons: Sarah Robertson adm. of the estate of Elias Robertson; Joseph Robertson and Langford Robertson. The following was called Roberson - Sandford Roberson No relationships were given. In Feb, 1928, Joseph Jacobs, admn in right of my wife. [this sounds like Sarah remarried. Will - John Robertson of Madison Co., MS. Brother William Robertson in SC to take my estate and raise my children. He appointed some temporary guardians to his children until his brother was available. Qualified William Robertson Sept 21, 1816 by Edgefield Dist Court Qualified the following appraisors to sell land to pay debts: [Evidently he owed land in Edgefield, as these are Edgefield Co. Names] Wm. Oliphant Elias Blackburn John Blackburn Sampson Butler On 5/6/1822 , paid William P. Robertson $50 in part of his legacy; On Nov 14, 1823, paid $115.54 in full. Cash paid Daniel Robertson 1822 - $22.54 or 225.41? (could not tell where the decimal was and if a mark at the end was a 1 or just messy microfilm marks.) Jan 2, 1823 - paid Daniel Robertson $140 (no mention of legacy) Temperance Robertson one of the legatees - 1822, paid John Huff $100 for maintaining and supporting Temperance Robertson for 5 years, her being one of the legatees of John Robertson. Gray $16.85 1828 Douglas Robertson $253.00 -------------------------------------------------- Box 24, pkg 864, Edgefield Dist, SC Will of William Robinson, Decd, A Connor Exec., /w/ March 1, 1820, Filed 7/28/1827 State of SC, I Willam Roberson of Edgefield District being of sound mind... in manner following: 1st All my debts to be paid... 2nd I give and bequeath to my grandson William Payne, Jr. my lands on Horsepen Creek contining 470 acres more of less also the Negroes old Adam, ___, ___, Charlotte and ____ Barnes and their ___ and increase. And if my said grandson die leaving no wife or lawful ____, I BEQUEAT THE SAID LANDS AND BEFORES TO BE EQUALLY divided among the children or lineal descendents of daughter Margaret Conner and Jane Marsh in fee simple forever. [This item was revolked in a codicil dated 12/27/1823 due to the death of William Payne see notes below] 3rd I bequeath in fee simple to my granddaughter Elizabeth Marsh one Negro girl Young Sarah and increase and one feather bed & furniture. 4th I desire that the lands whereon I live containing about 400 acres more of less shall immediately after my death be divided from East to West into two tracts so as to throw into the upper part or house tract one 400 acres the most acres and I hereby give and bequeath the upper tract of the said land to my grandson William Robinson Marsh and the lower part of tract to ------ my grandson William Roberson Connor and should either of my grandsons die leaving no lawful ------ my will is that his part of the said land shall be divided equally among his brother and sisters or their lineal descendants. Daughter Margaret Connor's to childen receive Negroes Daughter Jane Marsh's children to receive Negroes Codicil gave the lands formerly left to grandson William PAYNE to his other grandsons William Robinson Connor, and William Robinson Marsh. He also divided up the negroes that had been left to William Payne dec;d Proven with codicil 26 Nov. 1826 COMMENTS: There seems to have been a problem as there is a document where all lands were ordered to be sold and debts paid. It seems to be saying that the heirs were reponsible for paying from their portion on debts. The estate probate was taken from the acting executor Albert G. Connor, "him having been arrested", and the estate was turned over to W. Brooks, Comminsioner of Equity. The legacy of Margaret Conner will pay 55 cents on the dollor for the debt and Jane Marsh to pay .44 on the dollar. Looks like Jane Marsh owes about $2600 back to the estate for the payment of debts. I did not see an line item pages of the legacy of Margaret Connor.
