Another interesting interaction with some of my folks: You wrote: 1 May 1804. Caleb Holloway Fr [sic: Sr. or Jr.?] to John Whitley Sr, deed, 1 May 1804 $300, four hundred forty acres, except three acres sold to Abney Mays situate on Halfaway Swamp Creek, the same being part of three grants, one granted to Edward Burk, one to Daniel Coleman, and one to Reuben Holloway. Adjoining lines of Abney Mays, Keheley, Henry Hazle, Ollyman Dodgen. Proven 25 May 1805 by Dodgen, Wm Robinson JP, 5 Nov 1805. [Note: despite coincidence of names, this appears to be Daniel Coleman of the unrelated Coleman family of Halfway Swamp, not a Goleman of Mountain Creek.] Source: Wells, Deed Book 26, p. 102. Transcribed by Reba Murphey. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------ Harriett, I call this Caleb Sr. and he is another son of Reuben Holloway, and a brother to the Jordan above. There are several Calebs that had to be sorted as well. Quite confusing, and I still haven't figured them all out. 1 Caleb HOLLOWAY, Sr b: 1767 d: August 20, 1840 Edgefield Co, SC There are records of a Caleb m. to an Elizabeth, another to Mary Weeks, "Edgefield Death Notices and Cemetery Records" by Carlee McClendon Obituary from Edgefield Advertiser Issue August 20, 1840: "Departed this life on Aug. 20, 1840 at his residence in Edgefield District, Caleb Holloway, Sr. in the 73rd year of his age. after a protracted illness of just 7 months. He left behind him an amiable wife. He was an active member of the Baptist Church for 30 years, the greater part of which time, he served as a Deacon." [why don't they mention wife and parents names in these early obits!!] Caleb who married Elizabeth does not name any children, but neices and nephews. Therefore I assume they had no children. However, in the 1840 census, living in the household with Caleb and wife, was a 1 f 15<20. who was she? There is also a Caleb who married Mary Weeks. Since HC states that Caleb's wife Sarah Elizabeth Nobles was previously married, would it be too much of a stretch to assume that Caleb was married before. Maybe the resolution to the problem of which Caleb is which is that he married twice, and is the same Caleb who died in 1840. [ no proof yet of Sarah Elizabeth Nobles marriage] ALERT: I think the will below is for the Caleb who married Mary Weeks. There are too many entries in the will for Weeks, and the signature (mark on the permission to hold an estate sale is that of MARY Holloway, not Elizabeth. So the death date may go to another Caleb?? Or his Caleb married twice and mentioned in the previous paragraph. "Wills and Deeds: Edgefield Co, SC" Compiled for the Old 96th Dist Chapter of DAR - located at Camden Archives, Camden SC in DAR library: p. 54-55 Proved on oath of Luke Culbreath and Wiley Turner, 9 Sept. 1840, qualified Lewis Reynolds -. O. Towles, OED recorded in Will Book D, pg. 115-116, Sept 1840. [Abstract] Because of Conflicting data (Some have him as son of Reuben, others as son of William. Did he marry Mary Weeks or Sarah Elizabeth Nobles?) , I copied and transcribed the full text of Calebs will. *Will of Caleb Holloway, Sr. Recorded 5 Sept 1840 Isaac Boles Exor. I have information on both, but have been unable to find good documentation to help sort them out. The above Caleb does not seem to have had any children, I will be glad to send notes and sources upon request to me personally, but they contain mostly discussion of my conflicts.
