Is anyone researching the HATCHER,LANDRUM,CARPENTER, WHITLOCK,RANDAL, SWEARINGEN, and other related families in the area south of what became Trenton and the Pine Log House in Edgefield/Aiken Distric and/or Counties, South Carolina??? I also have a double TOOLE line in Barnwell as well. I triple post to all three lists because there was some migration back and forth before Aiken County was created. Some people are on one list and not the others. Can anyone tell me who the two little Carpenter boys were who are listed on the 1860 census of Edgefield District, South Carolina, with Amos Landrum??? The identity and relationship of John and Francis Carpenter in the estate records of the Hatchers has "stumped" me for years. Who were they and how were they related to the Hatchers? Have never been sure if Frances/Francis was male or female and whether John and France(i)s were husband and wife, brother and sister or just what??? They are in the Hatcher estate records and in the equity court records along with Alfred Hatcher, etc. 1860 census Edgefield District, South Carolina, written page 26, printed page 13, House #199/196, Lotts P. O. Jne 18, 1860. Amos Landrum 80 M $8500/5600 Farmer b. SC Betsey " 67 F b. SC Wm Carpenter 3 M b. SC Infant " In the printed/published copy copy of the 1860 census the name was transcribed "CarKeater", but the microfilm copy on Heritage Quest/Texshare sure looks more like Carpenter to me and is the more common name especially in that community. On the heritage Quest index Amos comes up as Landru"n." According to EDGEFIELD MARRIAGE RECORDS c. 1970 by Carlee T. McClendon Page 90 Amos Landrum married Elizabeth Hatcher, August 12, 1838 (Edgefield Advertiser). Elizabeth was the daughter of John Hatcher d.1825 and Christian _?_ b.c. 1773 Virginia d.c. 1852 Edgefield District, South Carolina. According to the 1850 census Amos & Elizabeth/Betsey had no children. If they did they ere deceased by the 1850 census. They were living with her widowed mother, Christian Hatcher. My Hatcher ancestor is Frances b. c. 1842, daughter of Alfred Hatcher, who apparently married James Whitlock c. 1864 d. mid-1870's. I am not researching the Landrum family. My main line is Carpenter and the others are branches from that line. Vivian Toole Cates, Rt. #2 Box 52-A, Alto, Texas 75925-9607 1-936-858-3801 http://www.inu.net/vcates
