Dear List Members, I am seeking proof as to whether Christian _?_ d. 1850-60, widow of John Hatcher d. 1825, was a Robertson/Robinson and who her parents would have been. This query is in response to recent posting to the Edgefield District/County, South Crolina, list and private e-mail about Robertson/Roberson and other spellings connections in Edgegield District, South Carolina. And in particular their connections with other families in the area of Edgefield around the Pine Log House (Swearingen's) and what later became Trenton because of the railroad stop. My connection with the Robertson/Roberson family is trying to either prove or disprove the contention Leonardo Andrea made in a 1948 Report on the Edgefield Hatchers, that Christian/a/ia Hatcher, the widow of John, the son of Lucy _?_ and Benjamin Hatcher Rev. War Sol., was a Roberson/Robertson. Leonardo Andrea also seemed to think that Lucy was a Cheatham from Virginia. The Robertson/Robinson connection was mentioned in a will of William Robertson/Roberson for 1840/1841 Edgefield that named a Christian Hatcher as an heir. I mailed a letter to the SC Archives today to try to get a copy of this will and the loose papers. Since I did not have a Box or Package Number or a will book and page number, I am not very hopeful of getting anything back. Andrea's report and a listing in Reviell's book only listed dates and no other reference. Temperance Roberson/Robertson was a daughter of John Roberson d. 1816 in Mississippi as given in the recent posting by Billie Jones. John Roberson's will is abstracted in the Wolley book of Edgefield Wills 1787-1836. By 1826 or about January 1827 Temperance Robertson/Roberson had married Bartlette/Bartley (various spellings)Hatcher. This is proven by an Equity Case #442 in Edgefield dated 1832. William Roberson/Robertson vs Bartlette Hatcher. Wm Roberson was claiming that Bartley Hatcher owed money to John Roberson's estate and Bartley Hatcher was claiming that he did not. Bartley Hatcher was the son of John Hatcher and Christian _?_. So if Bartlette Hatcher's mother was a Robertson and he married a Robertson/Roberson what kind of cousins would he and his wife Temperance be. First cousins once removed??? Seems as though from Andrea's summaries of the Hatcher Equity cases there were a number of marriages among the Hatcher cousins, descendents of Lucy and Benjamin. Douglas Robertson was a witness to Lucy Hatcher's (widow of Bemj. Rev. War. Sol)written in 1833. She died in 1839. A William Robertson was appointed an appraiser on the estate of John Hatcher c. 1826. Not clear from loose papers if he actually served or not. I am still trying to sort out these Hatchers and get them into my genealogy computer program. My Hatcher ancestor is Alfred b. c. 1800 d. after 1860, brother of Bartley Hatcher above. Any assistance with relationships is appreciated particular the identity of the other Hatcher man on the early census of Edgefield and how they might have been related to Benjamin.
