Dear List Members, This posting is in response to Kathy Wilcox's query on the Edgefield County, South Carolina, e-mail list at roostweb.com stating that there were two Frederick Holmes in Edgefield District, South Carolina. Ms. Wilcox's citations state that one Frederick Holmes had married the Patience _?_, the widow of Rice Swearingen. The equity court cases she has cited also name four children and who the daughters married. NONE of the children are named Rice. Can anyone identify the Rice Swearingen b.c. 1813 married/living with Susan C. _?_ _?_ Hatcher on the 1870 Edgefield County, South Carolina, census. There are obviously two Rice Swearingens of different generations. In 1850 and 1860 census Susan was listed with Alfred Hatcher b. c. 1800. Equity Suits claim that Alfred Hatcher died without issue/children about 1868. Who were the parents of my ancestoress, Frances/Fannie V/Virginia _?_ b.c. 1842 who was in Alfred Hatcher's household in the 1850 and 1860 census and was Susan C._?_ her mother? Rice and Susan Swearingen are being sued in equity because John Hatcher's will of c. 1825 provided that if his son, Alfred Hatcher, has no children, that Alfred's land at Alfred's death was to go to the heirs of his son, John Hatcher. That one was to divide and the others was to chose. I don't remember which at this moment. And that Rice and Susan Swearingen were in possessions and would not give it up. I have a copy of the Swearingen book by Mrs. Karel L. Whyte. I have not been able to identify this Rice Swearingen b. c. 1813who is on the 1870 census cited below. Alfred Hathcer is suppose to have married Frances Swearingen, but I have two marriage dates twenty years apart c. 1821 and 1841. Both can not be correct unless he married her twice! Amos Landrum, given as a witness below on one of the citations, married Elizabeth Hatcher, a daughter of John Sr. d.c. 1825. Elizabeth was a brother to Alfred and John, Jr. of the equity suits mentioned above. If it helps at all to sort out the Holmes, these associated families lived generally in the area to the south of present day Trenton where the Pine Log House was located in early Edgefield history. My "brick wall" for years has been the idenity of Frances _?_ b. c. 1842 in the 1850 and 1860 household of Alfred Hatcher. Frances apparently used the Hatcher surnames married c. 1864 James Whitlock. They were one set of my paternal great grandparents. She went by the name of Hatcher, but Alfred could not have been her father if he had no children. Was Susan her mother? Who was this other RICE SWEARINGEN. Did he perhaps use another name earlier in life that I have not been able to find him on the Edgeifled census. Can anyone identify the other occupants of the household? The will was written 1 Dec 1789 and probated July 1790. "Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Fredrick Holmes two negroes Viz one named Ben and the other named Ansley to him and his heirs for ever." (Edgefield Will Book A, p 19; Probate Record Box 40, pkg 1575). This FREDERICK died intestate in 1814 in Edgefield Co, SC where his estate was probated (Probate Record Box 14, pkg 500; Equity Roll #160). Probate was filed 18 Nov 1814. His wife, CHARITY, was named, as well as his 6 children--Amos, Lewis, Ann m. Levi McDaniel; Mary m. Benjamin McKinney; Patience m. Lewis Clark; Leacy m. Frederick Bush; Dicy/Leodica m. Stephen Holstein. The Estate Sale was held 12 Dec 1814 and published at Dry Creek and Shanty Meeting House, Flat Rock. Bond for $5000 was given by Buckner Blalock and John Glanton on 21 Oct 1814. (LDS Microfilm #s 0023901 and 0162245) I think CHARITY HOLMES may have died about 1840. Her name appears in the new index 1770-1901 Miscellaneous Edgefield County Records, p 110, with "Probate" as the type of record. 2) Some researchers state that this FREDERICK was first married to PATIENCE _______. FREDERICK and PATIERNCE were married before Sep 1814. From Edgefield District Equity Records, the FREDERICK HOLMES married to a PATIENCE was still alive in 1819. This could not be FREDERICK, WILLIAM HOLMES' son. The following records show this fact: 2 Sep 1814. Edgefield Deed Bk 32: 88. FREDERICK HOLMES and PATIENCE HOLMES his wife to Rev'd John Landrum for $14, one acre on Horse Creek, in the corner of 150 acres originally granted to Henry Golden in fork of Beaverdam and beforesaid Horse Creek. Wit; Cyrus Cogburn, Abraham Masay. /s/ Frederick Holmes, Patience Holmes. Rec 11 Oct 1814 (LDS Microfilm #0023882). Equity Record #73. Phillip Herrin et al vs FEDERICK HOLMES & Patience his wife. Bill for partition. (4 items). Phillip Herrin who married Mary Swearingham, Josiah Swearingham, Van Edward Swearingham, James Stalnaker married Patsey Swearingham. Their father Rice Swearingham died some years since intestate leaving his children and a widow who has since married FREDERICK HOLMES, leaving 300 acres on Horse Creek adj lands of John Landrum, Steven Williams as yet undivided. Wife, Ann; daus Lucinda Eiken, Harriet Rhodes, Eliza Swearingen. Other children according to census were William, Jesse, James, John, Mary Ann m. Simeon McDaniel (don't have the source for this information??) Can anyone identify this FREDERICK HOLMES who married PATIENCE? Is ANNIE HOLMES who married JAMES SWEARINGEN kin to FREDERICK??
