    3. In looking over my list of unidentified Holmes in the years up to about 1840, I found this JOHN HOLMES. Anyone know anything about him? My map doesn't show Marshall Branch. Can someone describe what part of Edgefield this river/creek is located? 18 Aug 1790. Deed Book 21:84. John Walker and wife Jemimah of Orangeburg district to JOHN HOMES of Edgefield, for 10 pounds sterling money . . .182 acres on head of Monehaca branch . . . bounding that surveyed for Lott Warren 4 Sep 1785 certified by Robert Lang. . .granted by excellency Wm Moultrie 4_______1786. Said land being on Beavedam Creek a branch of Turkey Creek of Savannah River adj NE y John Frazier, NW by John Carter, SE by John Cotten, and by Burne's land to Sterks old road. JOHN HOLMES, Planter, to his son FREDERICK HOLMES, Junior, both of Edgefield for 50 pounds, 300 acres being part of 2 tracts on the head of Marshals Creek (1) 182 acres originally surveyed 24 Sep 1785 for Lott Warren and granted 4 Nov 1786 unto John Walker by Gov Moultrie at Charleston & sold by L & R 18 & 19 Aug 1790 unto said JOHN HOLMES; and (2) 118 acres on branch of Beaverdam of Turkey Creek of Savannah River being part of 260 acres surveyed by Wm Coursey, D.S., originally granted 1 Feb 1790 by Gov Charles Pinckney at Columbia & unto John Walker who conveyed by L & R 18 & 19 Aug 1790 unto said JOHN HOLMES. Wit: Ambrous Riply, Burgess White, who swore by oath 27 Nov 1793. Rec 4 Jan 1794 (Ibid). 28 Nov 1793. Deed Bk 9:75+. JOHN HOLMES of Edgefield Co to Kevan Taylor & Murren, Merchants for 50 pounds, sold 102 acres being part of 260 acres originally surveyed by Wm Frazier 31 Oct 1786 & granted 1 Feb 1790 unto John Walker who conveyed by L & R 18 & 19 Aug 1790 to JOHN HOLMES; 40 acres of which was conveyed by sd HOLMES to John Cotton; also 118 acres of the above tract was conveyed by said HOLMES to his son FREDERICK HOLMES 4 Jun 1792 which said 2 conveyances being deducted out leaves 102 ac of the original survey. Said tract being on Beverdam, a branch of Turkey Creek of Savannah River adj NE John Frazier, SW & NE John Carter, SW John Myzick, NE Samuel Marsh & Burns, SE by Daniel Rogers. Wit: George Hogarth, Morgan Murrah, who swore by oath 9 Dec 1793. 13 Mar 1794 ELIZABETH HOMES, wife of John relinquished dower. Rec 4 Jan 1794 (Ibid, p 129). 14 Nov 1801. Deed Bk 21:93. William Forbes Taylor of Campbellton, merchant, to Frederick Tillman, planter. For $485 two tracts originally granted to John Walker; one tract surveyed for Lott Warren on 24 Sep 1785 and granted to sd Walker 4 Dec 1786 containing 182 ac on Marshalls branch bounded at survey by Daniel Mazyck, Matthew White, Conrad Gallman. The other tract of 260 ac on Beaver Dam Creek of Turkey Creek of Savannah river surveyed for sd John Walker 31 Oct 1786 and granted to him 1 Feb 1790 bounded by John Frazier, John Carter, Mazyck, Samuel Marsh, Burns, and Daniel Rogers land, reserving out of the last mentioned survey a small piece of about 40 ac lying between _____ and Starks old road which parcel has already been sold by JOHN HOMES to John Cotton and is not included in this deed. Wit: John C. Mayson, Richard Quarles. Plat shows Iland ford Road to Ctown, Charleston Road, old road, Benjamin Linseys land, Beaver Dam Creek, widow Cottons land, John Cotton, Martin? Writes land, Cocks land, plat of 485 acres on Marshalls branch and Beaverdam including HOMESES old place on the Charleston road which several tracts was originally granted unto John Walker 4 Dec 1786. . . . Affidavit, saith that on Saturday night 25 inst in an affray with JOHN HOLMES that Vincent White had the rim of his left ear bit off by sd JOHN HOLMES. Charles Old, J.P. Burnes to John Cotton and titles made to Rebecca Cotton as admr of sd John Cotton in 1799 lying on Beaverdam Creek; all adj land of John Simkins, Wm Crane, Benjamin Frazier and Peter LaBorde, which I have inherited as heir of John Coton dec'd.
