In studying the post of Wanda Norman [email protected] to the Hill list, July 2004, I have found some conflicting info based on the data I have accumulated. Since I have not researched the family outside of SC, I am interested in specific verifications of the dates and locations for the following and reconciliation of the conflicting info. I have. The numbered info. was from Wanda's post. The info. beginning with * are my comments, questions, etc. Most of my information came from: 1: Richard N. Gookins, A History and Genealogy of the Gookin Family : Line of William Hill, (Salem, Oregon, Revised Edition, 1991). 2. East Goes West: History of the Craft-Hill-Harris...Families, (Alta DeShazer and George W. Craft). 3. List of children sited to the Will of William Hill, but I note I don't have it transcribed into my notes. Would love a copy if someone has it. I am seeking primary sources for dates and locations for the children and their spouces of William and Susannah Smithers Hill. One of the sources that Wanda sited was Hill Family bible. I would love information on that and a listing of the actual information from the Bible/s. --------------------------------------- 1. John Hill *When I discussed John with Richard Fischer, a much more knowledgable Hill researcher than I, and checked the Book "The History and Gen. of the Gookin Family" by Richard N. Gookins, 1991 (containing 267 pages of Hill family research), both indicate that John Hill was William's oldest son "who died young" , therefore explaining his exclusion from his father's will. Does anyone have a date of marriage for William and Susannah Smithers. Is it possible John was the son of one of the other wives? --------------------------------------- 2. Ewell Hill, b. 1737, Caroline Co. VA and d. 7 Oct 1832 in Abbeville District, SC. *I have a birthdate of ca 1755, quite a bit later than the 1737 date given by Norma. "A Collection of Upper South Carolina Genealogical and Family Records, Volume II" contains his will, and he names a daughter Elizabeth Hughes. But I have no wife for him. His will also names the following heirs. They most like are children of James and Elizabeth Hill Hughes, but I have no proof of that connection: July Williams, Catherine HUGHES, Ann PALMER, Thomas HUGHES, Frances HUGHES, James HUGHES Junr., Pamealy HUGHES. Any idea who he married, and info. on the birthdate discrepancy? If I connect to this Hill family, my ggg-grandfather Ewell Coursey b. 1818, Old Edgefield Dist, SC is probably names from this Ewell Hill, who would be his Uncle. -------------------------------------------------------- 3.William Hill, b. 1737, Caroline Co. VA., and d. abt. Feb. 1785 in Guilford, Stokes Co. NC. He m. Hannah Elizabeth Halbert 1758 in Guilford, Stokes Co. NC. She was b. 1742, Caroline Co. VA., and d. abt. 1800 in NC. *I have his death date as Sept 9, 1982 Rockingham Co, NC. Does anyone have the WILL or ESTATE PAPERs for this William? I have no dates for his wife. --------------------------------------------------------- 5. Elizabeth Hill, b. 18 Sep 1747, Caroline Co. VA., and d. 6 Nov. 1836 in Belton, SC. She m. William Anson Halbert Jun 1765 in Anderson Co. VA. He was b. 14 Oct. 1744 in Caroline Co. VA., and d. 28 Dec. 1808, Anderson Co. VA. *Regarding Elizabeth Hill - note that she died in Belton, SC. I notice that other locations are given as Anderson Co., VA. I am not familiar enought yet with the VA. counties, but I do know that Belton, SC is in Anderson Co, SC. Could that be the right location. [I have no knowledge of this, it just struck me as a possibility, and quite a coincidence if they had lived in Anderson Co. VA and then Anderson Co, SC. *Need sources for dates and locations for he and his wife. ------------------------------------------------------- 6. Robert Hill, b. 17 Feb 1751/52, Caroline Co. VA. and d. 2 Aug 1834 in Germantown, Stokes Co. NC. He married Martha Halbert Sep 1769 in VA. She was b. 1747, Caroline Co. VA. and dd. 20 Sep 1833 in Germantown, Stokes Co. NC. *Need sources for dates and locations for he and his wife. ------------------------------------------------ 7. Daniel Hill, b. 16 Oct 1756, Caroline Co. VA. and d. 28 May 1826, Williamson Co. TN. He married Martha Patsy Hickman, 16 Oct 1779, Surry Co. NC. She was b.16 Oct. 1758 in Albemarle Co. VA. and d. 20 Apr. 1845 in Franklin, Williamson Co. TN. *Need sources for dates and locations for he and his wife. The East goes West source I cited above gives his dates. ------------------------------------------------ 8. James Hill, b. abt. 1760, Caroline Co. VA., and d. 17 Sep 1835 in Lincoln Co. NC. He m. Anne Robinson 10 Mar 1785. *I don't have a date of death for him, but I have his location of death as possibly Abbeville, SC, so would be interested in the proof of his date of death and his still being in NC when he died. The info. I have from East Goes west gives his wife as "Mary". ------------------------------------------------ 9. Jesse Hill, b. bet. 1759-1761 in Caroline Co. VA., and d. 13 Jul 1818. He m. Mary Pittman Fowler bet. 1759-1761 in Caroline Co., Va. This is where I would connect thru their daughter Susannah m. William Cossey per Jesse's will. I figure he is one of Several William Courseys in SC at the time. HE died in Edgefield Dist, SC, I have read his original will at the SC STate Archives. "Edgefield Co, SC Wills 1787-1836" by James E. and Vivian Wooley gives some information on the will of Jesse Hill: p. 132 [I read actual will and inserted some info for clarification. Several items were left out of Wooley's extraction [Box 15 pkg 541, Edgefield Co]. Will post it in a different message. ------------------------------------------------ 10. Joel Hill, b. 26 May 1763, Caroline Co. VA., d. 7 Jan 1843, Jackson Co. Ark., m. Ann Watson, 16 Oct 1791, Richmond Co., Ark. She was b. 10 Oct 1773 and d. aft. 5 May 1855 in Jackson Co. Ark *I got a little bit of info. on him from the followin web site plus the two other sources I cited above. http://edge.edge.net/~gbhill/wmsmi001.htm#id6112 I don't have any dats for Ann Watson, but have her name as Anna Watson. *There is a large Watson family in Old Edgefield Dist, SC, that might have moved from VA to Edgefield with the Hills. The families may be connected, but I have no research on the early connections. My ggrand-uncle married a Watson in Edgefield Co SC, in December 13, 1888. -------------------------------------------------- 11. Joshua Hill, b. 26 May 1763, Caroline Co. VA, and d. 20 Jun 1855, Anderson Co. SC He m. Nancy Wyatt Collier, 8 Dec 1789 in Abbeville District, SC. She was b. 19 Sep 1769 in VA. and d. in Y.[did I cut off something or was this the way it was??] *I have conflicting info, but w/o comparable source documentation, don't know what is right. Undocumented info on: <http://edge.edge.net/~gbhill/wmsmi001.htm> July, 2002. [Home page: http://edge.edge.net/~gbhill/] JOSHUA2 HILL (William1); buried at Sandover/China Grove, Abbeville Dist., SC; born May 26, 1763 at Caroline Co., VA; married Nancy Wyatt Collier Dec 8, 1789 at Abbeville, SC; died Jun 20, 1865 at Abbeville, SC, at age 102. *NOTE: Date of death of 1865 is off by 10 years of what Wanda sent. Also location of death. Can anyone cite proof of one or the other. *NOTE the burial in said to be in Abbeville Co, SC rather than in Anderson Co. In the book "formation of counties", we know that both areas that became Anderson Co. (in 1826) and Abbeville Co. (1785) were both in the Old 96th Dist. of SC. However, the land areas were never a part of each other. I don't hve any Abbeville or Anderson Cem. records at home to check it, but will add it to my to do list. Another researcher who has collected massive cem. records states that China Grove Cem is now in McCormick Co, SC. McCormick Co. was formed in 1916 from Edgefield, Abbeville, and a small portion of Greenwood Cos. Does anyone have their 1860 census record to see where they were. I can find out at our local Archives, as it has all county census records 1790 - 1930. --------------------------------------------------- Hope someone can help with some of the descrepancies with proof. Please cut and paste the individual into a new message and answer one at a time instead of crowding the list with replies of the whole family.
