Several familiar names paid in 1821 were Stephen White, Thomas Garrett, Lyon, Martin. These were payments due from estate, not legatees. William Coursey named a legatee to Jesse's will. Must have married into family. [Richard N. Gookins, Gookin Genealogy: Line of William Hill, Appendix A1-A14 states that daughter of Jesse, Susannah Hill m. William Coursey.] Believe this to be husband of Susannah Cosey (Coursey) found in deeds and in 1840-1860 Edgefield Co. census w/o William. A William Coursey purchased 1 Bull and 1 saddle Nov 10 1820. On Dec 10, 1821 he purchases 1 grindstone, 2 [ ], 1 bed and furniture, 1 negro child Betsey from the estate Sale of Jesse Hill. February 1820 I have researched quite a bit into the White, Welch, and McFatrick connections with this family. Several wills are quite informative. There is a Susannah Coursey living with a White family in 1850 with several Coursey children, Uel (10) and Catherine (9). She is too old to be their mother, but is consistent with Susannah Hill Coursey, and probably a grandmother. Don't know whos children they are yet. Here are the notes on Susannah Hill Coursey that I have compiled thus far. Or is he the William Coursey who brought a law suit against William Thurmond (connected to Strom) for mishandling the estate of his father Capt. James Coursey who died in 1799? Or William the son of John Coursey who died in 1812, Old Edgefield Dist, SC?? Or is he the son of the brother of James Coursey: James Coursey was also collecting on the indent of William Coursey, deceased, his brother on 9th Feb. 1786, "Please pay the interest due the account of my deceased brother William Coursey, and pay this to John Purvis, J.P. Feb 15, 1840 Red Bank Baptist Church took up the case of Susannah Coursey said to have been a member of this church about 20 years ago. Upon---, we cannot find her name on the church book nor among any of the church papers. She says she was a member of the church and went off without ever applying for a letter. Some of the oldest members knew her but could not tell whether she was a member or not. The clerk is requested to write to her or some of her friends stating the concern and if she wishes to join any other church they can bye their own pleasure she has not been returned a member of this church for the last 15 or 20 years to the association.(Letter sent) [Minutes of Red Bank Baptist Church, Historical Records, Fuman University, Greenville, SC] Where was she during those 10 years?? Or are they grandchildren of another child of Susannah? I lead toward the latter, but w/o proof. Other circumstancial evidence that Susannah Coursey is in fact Susannah Hill, is noted in this 1850 census: two doors down from Abner White and William White (with Susan Coursey) is Joshua Hill, oldest son of Col. John Hill, his wife Frances and three children. Col John Hill was the brother of Susannah Hill who m. a Coursey. I don't think it coincidence that these families are all together and until we find the solid document, we can keep building our circumstantial case. 1860 Edgefield Cold Springs, pg 68/136, hh# 1049/1036 [transcription book, have not seen original] William White 58, Farmer - $100, SC Synthia White 38 ca 1822 , SC Coursey, Susan, age *56 - b.
