    3. The date on the death cert. is the same as in the Mt. Vernon cem. records: Mattie Lavinia Mayson - 8-23-1850, 11-6-1934 I have 5 children, a new daughter that shows up in the 1900 Census: Edgefield Co, SC, Kibler twp, p. 62A, hh#28/26, with parents. I had problems with the date of Corra's birth, (who must the the I.C. you have) and that of Jasper, unless they were twins. 1900 census, however, shows they were not. So she must have been born in 1878 or 1879. Sometimes I think the census takers just made up the ages or dates...And look at the error for Janie. If born in 1884, she would be 16. 1. [SCEDGEFI] Yonce, Derrick, Moyer family confusion.

    3. This census records has me really going around in circles. Hope some of you researchers on the lines mentioned can help me out. I transcribed this from Heritage Quest image. CENSUS: 1870 Edgefield Co, SC, Spring Grove twp, Lotts PO, p. 488A-B hh#261 * Mary Ann Derrick, 26 Juliann C. Derrick F, 3, SC Frances L. Derrick F 1, SC R. McK. I figured she was a daughter of Abram (44) and Chrisitian Yonce (40) in the census and Christian to be the dau. of Christin Mayer (64). I figured that Mary Ann must be the wife of Rufus McKeller Derrick listed 4th.... why I do not know. However, I have also seen his wife in other records as Mary Ann Margaret Moyer???? I have not researched the Moyers. The Derricks I know a little about as they are kin thru marriage into my Rauton line, as are the Yonces. The 1850 and 1860 census along with the above 1870 census led me to believe that it was Mary Ann who married the Derrick, not her sister Margaret. 3. Note correction on the publication date of Estelle Corley Harper's obit. It was published Nov 1, 2006. My typo. said Nov 21... Brenda, Glad it helped. I have so many Death Cert. that I have copied down, but just have not had the time to post. It takes me so long to type them up then copy them into 3 places: my FTM, a word doc of saved Death Cert., and to the various lists. And when I do each one, I work on census data, and cem. records for each one or I will forget to come back to them later. Conni, Regarding his ancestry, I have a Catlet Corley d. Bet. Nov 1807 - Aug 12, 1808 [Will of Catlet Corley, Edgefield Co. Will Book C, p.263- Will dated 27 Nov 1807, proved 12 Aug. 1808] and a son John listed b. ca 1787. Don't have him connected to wife or any desc. The only one of Catlet's children that I have with desc. is Adkins Corley b. ca 1800 md Elizabeth Unknown and several generations of their desc. Brenda, I looked in what I have on Cem. records for Greenwood Co, which is not much & did not fiind Adkin Cleveland Corley buried in one of them. IF the Magnolia Cem. Records ever get published, that will help as it is a very large cem. And there is another big one, but newer. Magnolia has some old graves in it. My g-grandparents and a couple of other relatives are buried there, and my Mom and I went to visit it before she died. We did not however, walk the rows looking for people. She was unable to do that at the time. I guess I need to go back. Jno. Haisten, an aged minister of the gospel of the M.E. Church, South, died at Whitesburg on the 22nd ultimo. Mr. H. was 75 years of age at the time of his death. In the death of this aged father of Israel, a good man has fallen, one who was loved and respected by all who knew him. Peace to his ashes. ------ IN MEMORY OF REV. JOHN HAISTEN by Rotherwood Lodge of F.A.M., No. 170 Thursday, May 24, 1877 Death has again invaded our brotherhood. Rev. John Haisten is no more. His sojourn on earth ended Tuesday, May 22, 1887. Only a few days ago he moved among us in life and usual health. On Friday last, he came to Whitesburg, the distance of about one mile, and returned to his home again in the evening. On Saturday, he was attacked with a severe pain in the breast which continued until the final summons came. Bro. Haisten was born in Edgefield District, S.C., March 8, 1802; his parents moved to Green county in this state when he was a child. At eleven years of age he received the blessing of the Holy Ghost sent down from on high, and soon after attached himself to the M.E. church. From that hour he continued to walk with God, and in 1847 was licensed to exhort. Eight years prior to this he resided in Coweta county, where his christian life won for him many warm friends. He was authorized to exercise the duties of a licensed minister in 1848 and was ordained to the office of deacon by Bishop Capers in 1854, and to the office of elder by Bishop Pierce in 1854. He moved to Carroll county in 1868 where he resided until the morning of his happy dissolution. Brother Haisten was not a member of the itinerancy, but having more good will than physical power, was compelled to retire from his ministerial labors, and was, in the true sense of the word, superannuated in 1872. For several years after he traveled over many counties in this State as colporteur, during which time he added largely to his already unnumerable host of friends. He connected himself with the Masonic fraternity in 1859 and after arose to the degree of a Royal Arch Mason. For every position he assumed in life, he was peculiarly well qualified. As a minister he was distinguished for his promptness to meet engagements, his untiring efforts where there was the remotest probability to do good, and an obvious and clear perception of the scriptures. Scrupulously honest, he incessantly guarded against the inroads of passion and prejudice and held the scales of justice with an even hand. He was so pre-eminent that even the partiality of friendship is scarcely able to do justice to his memory. Kindness of heart are ideas associated with his name in the minds of all who knew him. None knew him but to love him. None of us can think of him now without reverting at the same time to those admirable traits which have showed so conspicuously in his life and character. As a husband and father he was all that affection, tender affection, could make him. In every relation, domestic and social he was more and better than it falls to the lot of many to become. He has often been heard to say, "never sleep before prayer". As a Mason, sincerely zealous and truly charitable and ever ready to whisper sweet consolation to the ear of a worthy distressed brother. His influence today is not lying beside him in the grave, but is going on doing its work and having its effect and will continue to go on throughout eternity. Not unlike Elijah of old, though he be dead, yet speaketh. At his request when living, he was buried in the honor and custom of Ancient Free Masonry. A hand of brothers, relatives and friends escorted him to the tomb and there left his remains in the hands of the great grand master, Master of the Universe, there to remain until the trump shall sound in the resurrection morn, when his soul and body will reunite and ascend to that mansion above, a building not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Therefore; Resolved 1; that in the death of the Rev. John Haisten, one of the brightest stars of christianity has fallen. A devout christian, a humble minister of the gospel, a true Mason, a worthy citizen and affectionate and devoted friend, an honest man, has departed. Resolved 2; that we tender the afflicted and bereaved family of the deceased our warmest sympathy for the loss which they, in common with ourselves, the church, the community and the whole country, have sustained. Resolved 3; that this report, and these proceedings be entered upon the minutes of the Lodge and the secretary furnish a copy of the same to the family of the deceased brother and the chairman of this committee send these proceedings to the Newnan Herald and the Carroll County Times for publication. 1. Re: [SCEDGEFI] BUTLER's to Alabama
    2. Melissa Hogan
    3. Billie Thank you for posting this information on the Edgefield County John BUTLER. There was also a John BUTLER in Barnwell County at the same time time and of similar age except he died in 1818 in Barnwell. Several of his descendants also migrated to Central Alabama . . . I research the BUTLER as they married into my CHERRY's and I suspect there is a deeper "blood" connection but have not proven that yet. I was pretty confident that I had the "right" John BUTLER in Barnwell County, but your posting leaves me in no doubt! Again thanks for posting the BUTLER information . . .and for all that you do to keep the list "in the loop" and educated on the Edgefield families. 3. Hi, I hope you will consider signing up (it's free) for the online virtual cemetery at Find-a-Grave (http://www.findagrave.com <http://www.findagrave.com/> ) by going to: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=nm. At Find-a-Grave one can find one's relatives with photos of them, the cemetery, etc. It is also possible to leave notes and virtual flowers and to add more photos (all free). I think it is a wonderful way to honor the dead, and it is especially nice for those of us who live far from our family's graves. The site is also a big genealogy help to those tracing their ancestors. Thanks, Sharlotte

    3. Hello Edgefield Co. I am new to this List and hope this message finds you all in good health. I am a descendent of Thomas S. COTTEN b. ca. 1743 and d. 8 May 1816 in Amite County, Mississippi, through his youngest son, Willis COTTEN. Thomas S. COTTEN moved his family from Edgefield County to Mississippi in the early 1800s. I have information about him during his life in Mississippi, but I have little to almost nothing about him in South Carolina. I hope to find people and relatives that are also researching my g-g-g-g-grandfather. I have no information about his parents, siblings, or where he come from etc. Richard Wilkinson. Also researching Wilkinson, Pittman, Swearingen, VanSwearingen, and Wills. jrrrr@mywdo.com
