    1. [SCEDGEFI] HATCHER, JEREMIAH SHERIFF 1820 EDGEFIELD DIST. SC KIRKLAND & SWEARINGEN
    2. Vivian Toole
    3. List Members, I am still trying to unscramble Hatcher family connections in Edgefield District/Country, South Carolina to determine the identity and parents of one of my 2-great grandmothers, Frances/Fannie _?_ b.c.1842 d.c. 1876-1878 married James Whitlock, Jr. c. 1864-5. She was living in the household of Alfred Hatcher b. c. 1800 d.c. 1868 on the 1850 and 1860 census yet equity court suits over Alfred Hatcher's land claim that Alfred Hatcher had NO children. If Alfred Hatcher had no children then who were all of these people living in the same household with him and what was their relationship to each other if any??? How were the Swearingen and Kirkland families connected to Alfred Hatcher? Two unverfiable sources claim that Alfred married a FrAnces Swearingen (maiden name or widow???). One source gives year as 1821 and the other gives date of early 1840's. Kirklands were living with Alfred in 1850 and 1860. I was prompted to post again to the Hatcher list by the following tidbit from the Edgefield County, South Carolina list by someone who was researching the Hardiman Homes(Holmes, etc.)who was having his land sold by JEREMIAH HATCHER who was Sheriff of Edgefield District, South Carolina. Districts became counties in South Carolina after the Civil War. I have this Jeremiah Hatcher as being born somewhere between c. 1750-1781 d. after 1820 as a brother of Benjamin Hatcher Rev. Sol d. c. Nov 1781 South Carolina who married Lucy _?_. Benjamin and Lucy _?_ are the ancestors of most of the Edgefield Hatchers. Is this relationship correct? Vivian Cates, Alto, Texas 1-936-858-3801 Deed Bk 37:198. 7 Feb 1820. Sheriff Jeremiah Hatcher to Benjamin Tillman. I have combined month and day with the 1855 year that shows on census and cem. records for his "unofficial" birthdate. The only cem. record that looks promising because of the Ida Powell involved is the following, however, the dates of cem. are off quite a bit: [Information from HC Ouzts & Graniteville Cem Book.] Herbert W. 3. Can someone point me to maps showing the layout of the Edgefield County ED's from the 1870 and 1880 censuses? In particular I'm looking to find out if Butler's Township (shown with Edgefield Courthouse being the Post Office) in the 1870 census was the same as or overlapped the area that is designated Meriwether, ED 55, in the 1880 census. Thanks Greg Matthews

    1. [SCEDGEFI] New Windsor settlers
    2. Harriet Imrey
    3. The first group of settlers of New Windsor (frontier township that straddled what became Edgefield and Orangeburgh Districts) arrived in Charleston on the ship Prince of Wales on 1 Feb 1736/7. The names of the 170 passengers were not written down. They split into 3 groups on arrival, because the immigrants from different cantons didn't get along with one another. The group from canton St. Gall (including 6g grandparents of mine) settled in Saxegotha Township, and the group from canton Graubünden settled mostly in Orangeburgh Township. Those from the Ausser Rhoden half of canton Appenzell followed Capt. John Tobler and pastor Bartholomew Zouberbühler to the Savannah Town trading post (Fort Moore) where New Windsor Township had recently been surveyed. It was a small settlement, and 19 people died of malaria within a year of arrival. The names of the families can be partially reconstructed from land records, and also because people wrote about them. John Tobler kept a diary and wrote letters back to Switzerland, two other passengers also wrote letters home. Pastor Boltzius of the Salzburger settlement in Ebenezer GA kept a lengthy diary, and wrote about his interactions with the New Windsor settlers--including the large number who died or moved away. Some of the family names appear frequently in later records of Edgefield District. These Swiss immigrants are the first documented European settlers of Edgefield District, besides the McGillivray family who ran the trading post from their residences in Augusta and Charleston. There were probably some others whose names did not get written down. The SC records include many variations in spelling. Where possible, Tobler's spelling is used here. Johannes Tobler Bartholomew Zouberbühler (moved to Purrysburgh, died in 1738) Conrad Augster (died) Leonard Bruderer Andrew Duche Ulrich Egger Hans Ulrich Frey (died) John Iller Hans Krüse Christian Liectentage John and Adam Liectentage (brothers) Melchior Liectentage Conrad Lutz Michael, Leonard and Ulrich Meyer (brothers) Gasper Nägele (later Nail) Felix Riz John Schaeffer (died) Jacob Sturzenegger (joined by John Sturzenegger, immigrant to Orangeburgh in 1735) David Züblin (Zubly, moved to Purrysburgh, but David Jr. returned to New Windsor) Hans Zürcher (moved to Purrysburgh) Tobler mentioned in 1745 that "many" residents of New Windsor were moving to PA because of the absence of a Swiss Reformed church, minister, and school. His petition for a ministerial salary was denied, because the established church of South Carolina was Anglican. The small number of original settler families who remained in New Windsor were those who moved inland, and away from the malarial lowlands near the Savannah River. They lived mostly in the Beech Island community and along Town Creek in (current) Aiken Co SC. It is unusual--and fortunate--that this group left such lengthy documentation re their voyage and the early years of the settlement. I ran across the New Windsor history mainly because Tobler wrote down that he heartily disliked my Geiger ancestors, who had sailed with him. The feeling was mutual. Harriet Imrey himrey@ntelos.net

    1. Re: [SCEDGEFI] Floyd Whittle
    2. Dr. Constance T McNeill
    3. Billie I have the following children of a W F Whittle and his wife A C ? Whittle (could be Floyd Wilson Whittle and Amanda) buried in the Whittle Family Cemetery in Saluda County. I think this may be the same people. Notice the Essie Alma born in 1879 and the Floyd and Amanda had a daughter Essie born in 1879 All of these are buried together in the Whittle Cemetery. See "Our Saluda County Ancesters" Vol 2. When the survey was done there apparently was an assumption that all were the children of W. F. and A. C. but if this is Floyd W who married Matilda abt 1884 then Colen and Allison would be the children of Floyd and Matilda which would account for her two missing children (8 children/6 living). 1. Re: [SCEDGEFI] Question regarding Floyd Whittle son of Wilson Whittle and Hepseba Unknown.
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. Brenda, I was looking up some Reardens today in the 1900 census and found this record of a Floyd Whitte. Wonder if he is the same William Floyd Whitte that I have attached to Wilson Whittle (ca1821) md Hepseba (b. ca 1824). I don't know if you have researched him, as I don't have any connections to your Stricklands in the info. I have. I got this working on a Quattlebaum question. My notes on Floyd Whittle now include the 1900 census and if they are the same, it proves a 2nd marriage about 1884. 1. Re: [SCEDGEFI] Indian Territory in Edgefield
    2. Charles Andrews
    3. Harriet is correct that the line separating Indian territory from the royal province of South Carolina kept moving northwestward as more settlers encroached on Indian lands. As far as the area of Old Ninety Six District is concerned, there were two Indian clans that lived there in the mid 1700s. A small, isolated group of Chickasaws lived above Fort Moore on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River near Horse Creek. The main tribes of Chickasaws lived in what is now northern Mississippi. These Indians tended to support the English throughout the French and Indian wars and were on the main quite peaceful. In 1765 some of the Chickasaw leaders went to Charlestown to complain about squatters on their land and horse thieves. They also reported that all those who knew the boundaries to their land were now dead and requested it be resurveyed. The Council promised to have their land resurveyed and to have a Justice of the Peace remove the squatters. They were told that when a thief stole an Englishman's horse, the thief was sent to Charlestown and was hanged, and if white people steal Indian horses they should be hanged also. The Chickasaws ended up supporting the British during the Revolutionary War and had their South Carolina lands confiscated by the new state of South Carolina along with other British loyalists’ lands. The other Indians in northwest South Carolina were, of course, the Cherokees. They were some times peaceful and sometimes very much on the warpath. As you might expect, they were destined to lose the fight with the endless resources of the Europeans and the endless influx of settlers. Every time they went on the warpath, more territory was given up as a result. In 1730 Sir Alexander Cuming negotiated a treaty with the Cherokees and took several of them on a visit to London. The Indians were very impressed. Attakullakulla (Little Carpenter) replied, "Your white people may very safely build houses near us. We shall hurt nothing that belongs to them." This was, of course, before any significant numbers of settlers began to come into the northwest Upcountry. The whites they came in contact with were mostly traders who wanted their business and a few hunters. The Cherokee Path went up the west side of the Congaree and Saluda rivers and by 1737 had been widened into a wagon road from Charlestown to the Congarees. It was a road of commerce and eventually (1759) was 30 feet wide all the way to Fort Prince George near Keowee. But by 1746, after having had more experience with the white man, the Indians were more cautious and refused to allow whites to settle on Indian lands. In February 1746 the colonial government purchased a large tract of land from Ninety Six settlement (the fort was not built there until 1759) westward towards Long Canes. As part of this purchase, the northwest Indian boundary was defined as Long Cane Creek (in current Abbeville County) to its head, thence eastward to the nearest tributary of the Saluda River (Turkey Creek?), and thence down that stream to the Saluda River (below Ware Shoals, Greenwood County, SC), thence north to the intersection the Catawba-Cherokee Path. This was paid for with lead, gunpowder, vermillion paint, and beads, amounting to 189 pounds sterling. When the Calhouns and neighbors moved to the Long Canes area in 1756, they settled on the west (Indian) side of Long Cane Creek, and declared that they had secured permission from the Cherokees, but this did not prevent the Long Canes massacre in 1760. Conocautee (Old Hop) and other chiefs of the Cherokee nation signed the Saluda Old Town Treaty July 2, 1755 with Gov. James Glen of South Carolina. According to Historian Roy Vandergrift of Saluda, SC, this treaty ceded a large part of what became Ninety Six District, territory that embraced all or large parts of the present counties of Spartanburg, Cherokee west of the Broad River, Union, Newberry, Laurens, Greenwood, Abbeville, McCormick, Edgefield, Saluda and a small part of Aiken. In December 1761 after the 1758-1761 Cherokee War with much fighting, the Cherokees and colonial government in South Carolina signed another treaty. This one set the boundary forty miles from the Indian town of Keowee, a line proposed by the Cherokees. This new boundary was a straight line from the Savannah River where the Anderson County-Abbeville County line is today up to the Reedy River and thence a straight line northward to Tryon Mountain in North Carolina. The boundary line was actually surveyed in 1766. You may see a map with this boundary drawn on it in Meriwether’s Expansion of South Carolina, p 212. More that anything else, it was the Cherokee treaty of 1761 that led to a large influx of settlers into the Upcountry of South Carolina. This boundary meant nothing to the Creek Indians, who conducted raids around Long Canes and the Saluda valley in 1763-1766 time frame. These boundaries also meant nothing to northern Indians - Senecas, Mohawks, and other Iroquois tribes - who moved up and down the Appalachians for 20 or 30 years raiding both white and Indian (Catawbas, Chickasaws, and Creeks) settlements. As early as 1753 the Assembly in Charlestown put a huge bounty (100 pounds and later 50 pounds) on the head of Northern Indians. Like the Chickasaws, the Cherokees lost all their land in South Carolina because of their support of the British during the American Revolution. In 1786 Pendleton County and Greenville County were created out of the former Indian lands in the northwest corner of South Carolina. For more Indian-related history in South Carolina, consider, in addition to Meriwether’s Expansion of South Carolina, Robert Bass’s Ninety Six, John Henry Logan’s History of the Upper Country of South Carolina, and J. B. O. Landrum’s Colonial and Revolutionary History of Upper South Carolina. David Duncan Wallace, David Ransey, and Edward McCrady also wrote histories of South Carolina covering this period.

    3. Please note that Nancy is usually a nickname for Ann/Anne/Hannah, and Nancy Ann may be redundant. While I do not know anything about her, it is possible that Ann Butler may have had another given name other than Nancy.

    3. That is one of the "problems" with DCs, someone tells the Dr. or agent the information and it generally is a traumatic time and some information is not correct. His mother was Nancy Ann BUTLER and not Carrie. Perhaps the "( )" means "Not sure" or was added later ? DCs are a tremendous help, just have to be careful with the information. I did not have him dying in Spartanburg. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lee and Billie Jones" <tjones@camden.net> To: "SCEDGEFIELD" <SCEDGEFI@rootsweb.com>; "SCSALUDA" <SCSALUDA@rootsweb.com>; "SCGREENWOOD" <SCGREENW@rootsweb.com> Cc: "H.C. Clarisy is living with her sister, Permelia Dean in the 1910 SC Census, Greenwood Co., 6 ward Greenwood, Series T624, Roll 1459, Page 134. She is named as a sister of Permelia Bowles in the 1910 SC Census, Greenwood Co. SC, 6 ward Greenwood, Series T624, Roll 1459, Page 134. She is called Clarissa Strother. I cannot find her in SC in 1880 under Boles/Bowles or any other spelling, nor under Strother. I ran a find for all SC Clarissy's and none came up. it is possible she married one who was killed in the Civil War, but she should show up in 1870. No female head of HH was listed in SC in 1870 Heritage Quest index, and Heritage Quest lists only heads of HH. I tried several of the males, but no Claricy/Clarissa showed up as wife.
