In certain transcriptions in old documents from this time period, I have seen reference to the phrase, "__pounds Virginia money." as per the snip below in the estate in SC in 1783. Does anyone know what this really means? I know that there were many fluctuations back and forth between the pound and the American currency around the time of the Revolution but have never seen an explanation of our monetary system. Does anyone know of a website or reference to one that would explain this term? There's a pretty good chance that one of the grandmothers of Roger Mackerness Williams of Brunswick Co VA had the maiden name Goode. The first-name Mackerness got attached to the Goode family before they even moved to VA in the latter 17th century. John Goode (b. 1632 in Whitby, Yorkshire, England) emigrated to Barbados, where he married Frances Martha Mackerness (b. 1624 in St. Michaels Parish, Barbados, West Indies). Their son Samuel liked his mother's surname, set up a trend after heading for Henrico Co VA. I don't know the date on that, because I don't have access to the VA land patent records before 1696, when Samuel Goode was already there. His eldest son Mackerness Goode was born 1691 in Henrico Co VA. After which, every Goode generation for a couple of centuries seemed to find it necessary to name a son Mackerness (not always one-per-son, but pretty close). That first Mackerness Goode (or a same-named son or nephew) moved to Brunswick Co VA in 1747. Two--or, more likely, three--of the Mackerness Goodes appeared in SC with land petitions in 1767-71. Different petition-dates, grant-sizes, and non-adjoining locations often imply different people, but don't guarantee that. Anyway, men with all the same first names as those of the sons named in the 1735 VA will of Samuel Goode turned up together in SC land petitions dated 1767-71. Most of the grants were on Beaverdam Creek of the Little River (northern tributary of the Saluda) in a Laurens Co SC location. One early one was on the Little Saluda River in (later) Edgefield District, where a respectable showing of men named Mackerness Goode turned up a decade later. Some can be connected to family-groups via wills, deeds, etc., others can't. I have enjoyed collecting "spelling variants" in the colonial SC records, ever since I noticed the two dozen ways in which Gallman got spelled and the three dozen ways in which Geiger got written down (not merely transcribed) in the 18th century. A Soundex search-option will cover most, but not all, of those. No surprise about the extreme variations in the spelling of German or French names. (Dutch Fork settler Michael Bedenbaugh got written-down as Pitebog.) But surely there would be fewer choices for the Olde Englishe surnames? Nope. If you're doing a Google-search on colonial records for Mackerness, you may need to try these options--and these are merely the ones I've seen documented for somebody who was definitely/positively a member of the Goode family of Henrico Co VA, Brunswick/Lunenberg Co VA, and Laurens/Edgefield Co SC: Macherus, Machones, Machonnes, Magnes, Magness, Macherness, Mackennes, Mackerness, Mackness, McNees, McNess, Mackachones, Mackeneese, Mackenes, Mackenness, Mackones, McKaness, McKenzie, McKerness. This message isn't of much use for people looking for family-connections between Brunswick Co VA and Edgefield Co SC (of which there were many), but might be entertaining for those of us who have often wondered "how do I spell that?" when trying to look up records for the 17th-19th centuries. Answer: any-way-at-all. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Catherine Cooper" <catcoop@bellsouth.net> To: "Harriet Imrey" <himrey@ntelos.net>; <VHULL@aol.com>; <scedgefi@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 17, 2007 2:22 PM Subject: Re: [SCEDGEFI] Mackerness Minter Harriet and others, Do any of you know how the Mackerness family ties into these folks? The primary source for identifying Anna Maria Minter Williams' maiden name as Gooch was the LW&T of her father (and the subsequent probate file). The will of John Gooch, written 20 April, 1785 and proved during the November Court, Granville Co., NC in 1793, leaves to his son Gideon land in Caroline Co., VA, "which he sold and received profits" ..... also to daughter Elizabeth Terry, Anna Maria Minter now Williams, sons John, Rowland, Joseph, and William. Executors: sons Joseph and John. Witnesses: Daniel and William Gooch, James Terry, and John Gooch. Since his wife was not mentioned it is assumed that she was deceased. Source: Abstracted by Daniel Mahar. She married first Joseph Minter and second Captain John Williams. By her first husband she had 6 children (including daughter Anna Maria Minter who married Captain John Terry); by her second husband she had no known offspring. Don & Brenda Chandler

Vivian, according to Diane Layman, a descendant of Anna Mariah Minter who married John Terry as one of her three husbands, the Anna Mariah who married Joseph Minter was Anna Maria Gooch. born abt 1735 who after Joseph's death married a John Williams. Message from Diane Layman: I am descended from Joseph and Anna Mariah Gooch Minter (later Williams) through their daughter (sister to Mercy Parkman) Anna Mariah Minter, who married John Terry. Their daughter Nancy married David Nicholson, son of Wright Nicholson. David and Nancy Nicholson were my gggg-grandparents. I've seen the Parkman name mentioned a few times among the group, but not as far back as Henry and Mercy and I didn't figure anyone in the group would have anything on them, so I never asked. I have pretty much what is in the 1944 Nicholson book, and what I have been able to add from Edgefield records in print, which hasn't been a lot. Hi Billie, Regarding your question as to why Annamariah Terry relinquished dower in the deed below, the following deed may provide a clue: Edgefield DB 33, p. 126: Chesley B. Cochran to John Terry Senr, Deed, 30 November 1816, Fifty Dollars, 449 acres on Cyper Creek of Turkey Creek adj land surveyed by Godfrey Jones, and lands of Robert Stokes, William Morgan, Covington Searles, Thomas Ogilvie. Wit Jesse Waldrom, Tandy M Key. /s/ Chesley B Cockran. Proven 1 July 1816 by Jesse Waldrom; John Cheatham JP. Rec 1 July 1816. I have an abstract of the deed from William Holmes Sr. to Anderson and Jesse Holmes, and it states that Anna Mariah Terry was the widow of John Terry, decd. when she relinquished dower. It seems possible that John Terry owned the land and part of it was sold to William Holmes. (I could not find a deed abstract in which John Terry sold this land prior to his death in 1817.) Anna Mariah had not relinquished dower and so it was done in 1817 when William Holmes sold the land. Kathy, Joseph MINTER's WIFE was Annamariah... but I do not have her surname.. Could it be Joseph's WIDOW who married to John Terry perhaps... as opposed to his daughter? I am just speculating. I don't have enough data here to make that determination and hoping that you do. The timing of Joseph Minter's death would seem to be appropriate based on the time info given for John Terry's marriage and the births of his children. Do you by chance have a source for the GOOCH name. In other words could she perhaps be the wife of John Terry and the WIDOW of Joseph Minter? Note that in the following Rowland GOOCH is appointed Administrator. Was Annamariah married 1st to GOOCH, 2nd to Minter and 3rdly to TERRY maybe??? or was Gooch perhaps her maiden name. I have not done anything on the Gooch line, so anything would be appreciated. From the following it is clear that Joseph had both a wife and a daughter named Annamaria... but the date of his death seems appropriate for it to be his widow who married John Terry... Joseph Minter made a will in 1787. His son John by this time was surely an adult since JOHN, his son, along with GOOCH were the requested executors... so I would assume that his daughter was also an adult...Do you have anything to distinguish whether John Terry married the mother Annamaria or the daughter Annamaria? I recently got some information from the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society and the source given for some family group sheets was the "Randall collection". Is anyone familiar with that collection? If so could you tell me any more about what it is? Thanks, Janet

My response below the deed to which I am referring: Billie > Deed Bk 34:314. 21 Nov 1817. Anna Maria Terry gave up right of dower > and interest in this estate?? (LDS Microfilm #0023883) ------------------------------- Kathy, Estate of whom? I don't know who the Anderson and Jesse Holmes are. I have two Jesse Holmes, but too late to be the one in the above deed. However, the name Anna Maria Terry caught my eye. I have her in my files as the wife of John Terry, but I don't have his ancestry. Here is an outline of what I have on her and her family. I welcome any corrections and or identifications on her. 1 John Terry b: Bef. 1765 in VA d: Aft. Records by Carlee McClendon, p. 45 (361) "Died at her residence in Edgefield Dist., on Tuesday night, Dec. 18, 1843, of a lingering illness, Mrs. anna Maria Terry, in her 76th year. She died a member of the Baptist church. she has left several relatives she born (sic) to society. (The Edgefield Advertiser, Dec. 27, 1843)" So why did she have an "interest in the estate"? Maybe a brother or sister married someone who died without issue, and siblings were due the estate per the law? Or siblings of her husband, most likely, but I don't have who most of them married. I do have 6 siblings for John Terry. Dian Layman and I have worked on these families together, and I am sending this to her as well. Maybe she has more information that might help. --------------------------------------------- I also have a Rhydon Hill. The Rhydon Hill in my files is of the Abraham Hill. Abraham's son Theophilus Hill (1742, NC - ca 1791) left Edgefield and went to FL. because he was a loyalist. His oldest son, Lodowick Hill (1766 - 1822) md. Susannah Grigsby (1771 - bef. 1820) in St. Augustine Parish, FL / Richardsonville, SC (depending on which info. you use) and had Rhydon Hill (b. Feb 24, 1800, SC d? md?) as 5th child of their 9 children. This Rydon born Feb 24, 1800 [The Hills of Wilkes Co. Ga. and Allied Families by M.B. Warren,1972, Heritage Papers, Danielsville, Ga. 30600, (p. 164 from Family Bible Record of Theophilus Hill).] barely seems old enough to have been a witness in 1817???? But he is the earliest one I have. There may be an earlier Rhydon that I don't know about. I have not researched this Rhydon Hill, but another, Rhydon Grigsby Hill (1822 - 1856) was born to another son of Lodowick and Susannah, Theophilus Hill (1790 - 1852) md. Susan Richardson (1801 - 1859). Parent both died in Edgefield Dist. but this Rhydon is definitely too young since he was born after the deed was made. I researched this line because of the connection to my Dean line. A daughter of Lodowick Hill (1766 - 1822) who md. Susannah Grigsby (1771 - bef. 1820), Teresa 'Treacy' Hill (1887 - 1856) md 1) William Lewis (1785); 2) Bryant 'Bryan' Dean (1797 - 1881), son of my ancestor (Proven DAR line) William Dean md Nancy Bryan(t). And Cyper Creek of the deed is a good ways from the Sleepy Creek (off Turkey Creek), Ephraim Branch (where the Dean cem. is located and Trecy Hill is buried with the Dean family. Now did any of this do any good. I still cannot answer the original question.... Why did Anna Mariah Terry sign a dower and relinquish her interest in the estate. Estate of whom? Billie Jones

I descent from very Early Gentry: Anna Gentry, daughter of Hezekiah Gentry b. 1729 md Catherine Reynolds (have his ancestry from other research, not my own) md. Pleasant Burnett. One of their sons, Pleasant Burnett Jr. md. Artemesia Carter, dau. of Charles Carter. My Pleasant Burnett, Jr., his wife and several family members, including David Cunningham Bullock are buried in Proctor Cemetery located in Greenwood Co. ca 5 mi south of Ninety Six on State Hwy 246 just past the intersection of road #132. The Proctor Cemetery can't be seen from the road. Road #132 ( Aull Mill Rd ) does not cross Hwy 246. It's on the left (coming south from Ninety-Six) as is the cemetery which is about 1/8-1/4 mile past it - the first "path to the left after the phone box behind the house on the corner of Aull Mill and 246. The cemetery has a bad "road" which you can drive part way up if your car is not to low to the ground. The cem. is only about 30 yards in from the road. Pleasant's stone is very faded but it can be read. Compiler has pictures of many of the tombstones. I wonder if we can get Richard Earl connected back to these early Gentrys????
