I get behind in my emails, and then seem to just keep up with the ones coming in and don't go back to the old ones I saved. That's what I am trying to do today. Billie

    3. This message came back permanent delivery failure. I am trying again: I have previously posted the following death certificate. In working with the will of Mire J. Butler, posted by Randy Butler, It proves that the death cert. contains an error in his mother's name. The death cert. says: 1928 - Death Cert. #12967, McCormick Co, SC Tillman R. Rushton Male, White, Married, Farmer b. May 1, ____, age 48, SC father: John Rushton, SC mother: Nancy Leopard * d. July 1, 1928, Edgefield township, McCormick Co, SC cause: cardio-vascular renal informant: Nettie Rushton, McCormick, SC buried: Bailey Bethel [Bethel Meth, Callison, Greenwood, SC] UT: J. S. Strom. Cem. Record gives his date of birth as May 1, 1880 ------------------------------------------------------- *From the will of his grandfather, it is known that his mother was Nancy BUTLER, not Nancy Leopard. She predeceased her father and the children are heirs, listed in Mire Butler's will [Will of Mire J. Butler, July 19, 1886, Box 116 Pkg 4747, Proven January 29, 1888, Edgefield Co, SC] The will states: ...." to my Grand Children, the Heirs of my daughter Nancy L. Rushton Deceased, in money Ten Dollars to be equally divided amongst the said grand children...." The distribution shows the following payments: Pd. H. P. Rushton his distributive share in the above estate - $2.00 By amt paid Lucinda Cockrell, Larkin Rushton, Willie M. Rushton Tillman Rushton and J. D. Rushton their distributive share in full of said estate $8.00 I have her as Nancy C. Butler from census records. The transcriber of the will has Nancy L. Possibly her middle name was Leopard, or Lucinda, which was her mother's name. Maybe her mother was a Leopard, as I do not have a maiden name for Lucinda. **Does anyone know Lucinda's name, wife of Mire Butler b. ca 1815 who died Jan 23, 1888. From Census records Lucinda Unknown Butler was born in 1810. I have seen a 2nd wife mentioned, 2. Catherine (b. 1816 SC) L/w [Washington] Butler, identified as Mother in the 1880 census, but ages don't compute! She cannot be Washington's mother, but could be a mother-in-law, except I have Washington's wife as a McClung [Nancy Jane 'Nannie' McClung] My LDS CDs don't have a Washington Butler, but it may be this one md. to a Jane... He was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of American Legion Post 154 and a member of Johnston First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for many years and was an usher for 50 years. Survivors include his wife, Deloris Edwards Adams; sons, Barry (Sara) Adams, Aiken, Mart (Ann) Adams, Johnston; daughter, Betsy (Curtis) Cooper, Cayce; six grandchildren and one great-grandson. I have a Deloris Edwards b. Abt. 1923, as the daughter of James M. & Mary S. Unknown Edwards. Any one know if these are the same persons. Obit lists his parents as William Clay Adams Sr. and Janie Rhoden. I also have a Janie Rhoden in my files as the d/o James Wiley Rhoden (1904) and Orrie Mae Strom (ca 1905), but James Wiley Rhoden's obit in 1951 still lists Janie as a Rhoden?? Can anyone place these family groups together: the Rhoden, Adams and Edwards families? HC Ouzts has the Edwards connection as follows using xxx = Johnston Families book. 1. 3. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Gerre Byrd" <ggengard@comcast.net> This John Terry might be a child of Col. Champness TERRY. Col. (Colonel?) Champness TERRY. See Genforum. Will dated 14 Sep. 1775, probated in 96th Dist., SC - SC Records ofWills, Vol. 17, Book B, p. 373. They had migrated from PittsylvaniaCo., VA to the 96th by November, 1770. There, Champness was Colonel of the Militia and represented his district in the assembly. Gerre Byrd ------------------------------------------ Dian Layman, who researches the Terrys of Old Edgefield Dist, and Don & Brenda Chandler have sent me info. on the parents of John Terry. They are James and Elizabeth Gooch Terry. Dian writes: I am sure that Champness and the other Terry's are probably related, but, as best I can tell, not directly, unless back further than I have researched. The Edgefield documents I have seen do not indicate any direct relationship; in fact, do not have the two families together on any document I have seen. Of course, I'm sure, there may be documents I have NOT seen. Champness Terry is primarily mentioned in Richmond Co., NC., documents, whereas the other Edgefield Terry's originate in from Granville Co. NC. They both are originally from VA., but I have not researched the connection back that far as yet. Here is the jist of the will of James Terry of Granville Co., NC: Will Bk. 4, p. 265 Dated 22 Feb. 1797, probated Feb. Ct. 1799 (Mentions wife, but does not name her.) Desires that all of his estate be sold and the proceeds divided into seven parts and given: 1. to son, William Terry, 1/7 2. to son, Stephen Terry, 1/7 3. to son James Terry, 1/7 4. to son, JOHN TERRY, 1/7 5. to dau., Sarah Clement, 1/7 6. to dau., Mary Strom, 1/7 part during her lifetime, & then to her son, Joseph Gooch Minter. Terry Records of VA by Edna Harris Bushnell: (Revolutionary War Service) "Colonel Champness Terry of Ninety-Six District, Abbeville, S.C. He was elected to the Colony Congress about 1775-1776, but declined. He was born about 1740 in Virginia, the son of Joseph Terry Sr. and Judith Crawford Terry of Pittsylvania Co., Va. He was Under-Sheriff of Halifax Co., Va. in 1765 through 1768 when Col. Nathaniel Terry, his cousin and brother-in-law was Sheriff of Halifax Co., Va. He married about 1765 Sarah Terry, his cousin, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Irby Terry of Pittsylvania Co., Va. He wrote his will Sept. 14, 1775 and it was probated in Ninety-Six District, SC. 3. Can anyone on this list tell me if there was a brand book kept for Edgefield Co, S.C. where the men register they Brands , for the years of 1798 till???? I am speaking of brands that was used on cattle and hogs. So I assume they run wild in the woods, and they were marked or branded to keep them from getting mixed up with other people livestock. I have always thought once they register this brand they kept it and generaly it was passed from father to son. Thanks dorothy norris Researching Garner Va. N.C. S.C. Ala Ark

    1. [SCEDGEFI] Marshall's Branch
    2. Harriet Imrey
    3. Marshall's Branch was a tributary of Horns Creek from the northeast. An original landowner on it was Daniel Marshall, first minister of Horns Creek Baptist Church. Samuel Marsh, minister of the same church in the early 1800's, was also a landowner in that area, on nearby Beaverdam Creek to its north. The Ge Lee Corley Hendrix map of Edgefield shows a creek listed as "Tobler's Creek" in the only location for a tributary of Horns from the northeast. None of the Toblers ever lived near there, but it's the particular waterway on which Horns Creek Baptist Church was built. The single reference to a "Tobler's Creek" in the deed books is an obvious mis-transcription for Nobles Creek, since each landowner mentioned was one who lived on Nobles/Horns Creek. Reference is Deed Book 2, pp. 14-15, sale of land originally granted in 1755 to Joseph Nobles (from whence the first name of the creek), described as a "branch of Stevens Creek called Toblers now Horns Creek." Marshall's 1768 plat does not identify the name of the creek that got his name, but the plat was adjacent to lands of Samuel Walker and Allen Addison, both of whom owned land only on Horns Creek, at that time. I am virtually certain that the creek identified as "Toblers" on the Hendrix map was the one more-generally known as Marshall's Branch--given that the church and its ministers were at that location, and so were all the landowners with properties identified on Marshall's Branch. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathy Wilcox" <kwilly@281.com> To: <SCEDGEFI@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 19, 2007 5:56 PM Subject: [SCEDGEFI] John Holmes and son Frederick Holmes > In looking over my list of unidentified Holmes in the years up to about > 1840, I found this JOHN HOLMES. 2. For anyone interested, My friend Margaret Miller says: "The Mackerness name comes up frequently in Virginia Cousins in connection with the Goode family." She also mentioned that there is a Mackerness Minter. I have nothing further regarding him but thought those of you interested in the Mackerness name might want to check that source. Thanks to all for your help. Vivian

    3. Even more complicated than that! VA did not mint its own coins in the 1780's, nor did any other newly-formed state. The preferred means-of-exchange was the Spanish silver piece-of-eight, which could be cut into 8 sections. Cut it into four pieces, and one was a "quarter", a term still in use. (I actually have one of those Spanish coins from the 1790's.) The term "dollar" was from the "thaler" that was a standard unit-of-currency in Germany in the 1700's. The VA currency wasn't noticeably more stable than the currency of any of the other provinces before 1776, or any of the later states. Those of us born prior to 1950 will probably recall the "Folk Song Revival" of the 1960's, when a popular song included "I don't give a d__m about a Greenback Dollar, spend it fast as I can!" That was a resurrection of a very-early song, when nobody could depend upon a U.S.-issued dollar to hold its value. Also the expression "I don't give a Continental!" The Continental currency was so notoriously value-less that the term could be used for "expletive-deleted". Our ancestors had some hard times with their financial affairs. The ones who owned farms and knew how to grow food on their land did better than the people in other occupations. At that time, there was no coin or piece-of-currency called a British "pound". It was merely an accounting convenience as a unit-of-exchange. The book-entry for one £ sterling was 20 shillings. The actual "coin" was a gold guinea worth 21 shillings. (I can't imagine how they came up with that system.) There weren't actual bills-or-coins for the exchange-entries among colonies, states or nations either, merely entries in accounting-books by merchant-bankers, with the usual add-ons for their effort in converting-the-currencies. When people specified in the 1780's that their transactions were to be measured in "pounds sterling", they knew what they were getting. When specified as "SC current money" or "VA money", they might get surprised by the value going downhill in a hurry. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greg Matthews" <dialzero@bellsouth.net> To: <scedgefi@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 17, 2007 8:39 PM Subject: *** SPAM *** Re: [SCEDGEFI] phrase-Virginia money To start with, in 1783 there was no US Mint. The "government" was not minting or printing its own money. I put government in quotes since 1783 was the year the Revolutionary War officially ended and between that date through roughly 1790 the US was really a Confederacy (yes, just like the CSA). Individual states had far more power than they do today. With that in mind they each (as far as I know all of them to one degree or another) printed their own currency and many of them minted their own coins until the mint was established. It might be easier to picture your question using a modern example. The US is not the only country to use the "dollar" as its currency. Australia uses the Australian dollar, the Bahamas have the Bahamian dollar, Singapore uses the dollar, as well as another 10 or so countries. Just because each of these countries uses "dollars" doesn't mean that they are equal in terms of what they will buy. Two hundred years ago countries used gold and silver as the basis of the value of their coinage and currency (silver or gold certificates anyone?). Spain was typically the country upon which others based the value of their coins. I really don't know how much silver, by weight, was in a Spanish dollar, but let's say it was 5 troy ounces. Let's say that Massachusetts minted it's own coins and that they minted a coin called a dollar, but it contained only half as much silver as the Spanish coin. That MA dollar isn't worth as much as the Spanish dollar, and obviously it won't buy as much. Obviously Virginia minted it's own coins at this time. I don't think the Carolinas did, but I know they printed currency. People liked having silver and gold in their hands and not a piece of paper whose value could change on a whim. From what I have read Virginia coins were stable in their value so it is typical to see "Virginia money" specified. So, people were well aware of the value, or in fact its "buying power", so they would have specified it. Occasionally you will see curency specified in terms of so many pounds of Viriginia tobacco. This was especially true in the 1600s to mid 1700s but by 1783 it was uncommon.

    3. Somebody actually wrote a whole book about that topic. It's John J. McClusker, Money and Exchange in Europe and America, 1600-1775: A Handbook. I have a copy, but have temporarily forgotten where I put it. The VA currency was worth a "little bit more" than the SC currency by 1775, but not by a large margin. From 1730 to 1776, it took ~7 South Carolina pounds (also called "current money") to equal one pound sterling. The VA currency wasn't a lot different...at least before the war. After which, times and currencies got real complicated. If you really want to know how much it took in Amsterdam, Zürich, or London currency for a settler to get over to SC, and how he had to exchange his money among NY, PA, VA, NC and SC currencies, then you'd probably find it quite interesting. It's definitely not light bedtime reading. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty Bivins" <halbet@angus1841.com> To: <scedgefi@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 17, 2007 8:04 PM Subject: [SCEDGEFI] phrase-Virginia money In certain transcriptions in old documents from this time period, I have seen reference to the phrase, "__pounds Virginia money." as per the snip below in the estate in SC in 1783.
