VA. Listed in Vol. 1, p. 425, Accomack Co. VA Patent Books, September, 1663, Edmond Scarburgh received 1450 acres of land for transporting 4 persons, William Ashley, Elizabeth Bydolph, Edward Fleetwood and Robert Fleetwood. It is speculated that this William may have been a brother to John Ashley, 1625-1671, who was rejected by Lady Jane. The story says he came to the colonies first, but he could have gone back to England, then returned. Possibly decendents of William are Charles (will 1724-1736), m. Sarah ?, lived in New Kent VA, had daughter, Eleanor, son Ezekiel (will 1764). Ezekiel had John, c 1730, d. 1762-68, m. Mary Norfleet. Among John's children, a son Nathaniel, who was apprenticed to Fleetwood in 1770. Also son Joseph, m. Sara Barrows. Joseph, Chowan Co. had a son William (will 1783) This William had a son Jeremiah. Another William in the same time frame (1600s) is William b. ca1699, d. ca 1762, m. Duchenfield,Chowan NC, SC. This William had sons Nathaniel, 1730-1800 Camden and Anson Co. NC, SC, GA, m. Jean Williams; Robert, ca 1728, m. a Polly; Charles 1726-? m. Norfleet (Felisha?) Orange NC, Edgefield, SC. These brothers were Tories and their land in NC was confiscated. Nathaniel had a son William, 1763-1839, m. Mary Raines, Anson Co. NC, Coffee Co. GA. Robert had a son William, and Charles had a son William 1750-1806. Charles is my probable ancestor. There is a William, Norfolk VA, 1724. A William m. Mary Flowers, Lumberton NC, Montegomery AL (son of John Plowman, who had a son William. There is a William 1700-?, m. a Mary, Kent CO. Dionysius has a son that is probably my John Blakeley, Sr. Bland appears both in SC and GA in the limited records I have found on him and I lose him in 1806. Their location in 1790 was near Lexington and Dionysius's probate in 1815/1816 is in Edgefield County. Gary Blakely
Several people on the list have shown interest in Sugar Jones Mathews in the past, about where the name came from in particular. I'm hoping that bringing this subject up again with some new "vectors" that hit me a little while ago like an epiphany will spark someone to tell me my theory makes sense. First, there were several men in Edgefield County who had the name Sugar Jones Mathews. There was one who was a son of Lewis Mathews and Nancy Allen. There was another who was a son of the former Sugar's brother Drury (he migrated to Louisiana). The third Sugar is the one who is of particular interest to me at the moment. I suspect that he was a brother of the Drury Mathews who married Mourning Pope. Drury's parents were William and Mary (possibly Cook) Mathews. I tentatively have William and Mary's sons as: Drury m. Mourning Pope Lewis m. Elizabeth Pope Sugar Jones m. ??? There was also a James Mathews close to them who I suspect was also a son, but I am less certain about him than the other three men. At worst, he was a son of one the three above. All three of these men, as well as William, lived close together between Ninety-Six Creek and Halfway Swamp close to the Abbeville Co. border (modern day Greenwood County area). Sugar Jones Mathews shows up first in Edgefield in the 1800 census which is adequate proof that he is not to be confused with the other two Sugar's as one was 5 years old or less and the other wasn't even born. There is a Brunswick County, VA marriage record for Angelica Jones Mathews marrying a Sugar Jones Mathews 11 Jun 1792. That marriage aside I've long felt that William Mathews and his sons came from Virginia before settling in Edgefield County in, I believe, the 1780s. I've also always felt like these Mathews men were related to the more well known Mathews who settled around the Little Saluda Creek area in about 1788, but I've never been able to prove it. I still can't prove it, but I now believe I can make a case for it that is compelling. The fact that someone named Sugar Jones Mathews married in Brunswick County has always been of interest because I've never seen the name "Sugar Jones Mathews" outside of Edgefield County at this period of time with that one exception. Not in any book, microfilm or anywhere on the internet. The past week or so I started working in earnest on a related Mathews line that did not migrate to Edgefield County. In that line some of the more common first names are Drury, Luke, William and John. These names appear over and over again in the names of the sons and grandsons of Charles Mathews who died in Brunswick County in 1780 (Charles was an uncle of the Isaac Mathews who settled along Little Saluda with sons Moses, Lewis, Hardy, Micajah and Daniel). Angelica Jones Mathews was one of Charles' granddaughters. The Sugar Jones Mathews from Edgefield who lived near Drury and Lewis died about 1831 (administration on his estate took place in 1831) and twelve people received a 1/12 share in the sale of his real estate. So, I assume his wife was dead by 1831 and the twelve named were his children, to wit: James, Drury, Blanche, Lewis, Catherine, William, Willey/Willa, Pamelia, Caleb, Luke, John Christian (for his wife's share) and the two children of Bud [Cade] Mathews deceased (Sarah and Martha who split a 1/12 share). In that list of names we see 3 names that are very common in the line of Angelica Jones Mathews' grandfather: Drury, Luke and William. Lewis and James are also somewhat common and those are names of two of Sugar's sons also. As if that wasn't enough circumstantial evidence I recalled a couple of hours ago that I had read an older post by Billie Jones a few weeks ago on Willey/Willa, one of the daughters mentioned in Sugar's administration sale. I believe Billie was asking if it were possible that Willa was the wife of John Benjamin Carter of Edgefield County. One of the receipts to the estate sale of Sugar Jones Mathews went to John Carter Jr. "for share of wife". Assuming that Willa did in fact marry this John Benjamin Carter then I find the names of two of their children of particular interest: Charles Richard Gellico Carter and Lydia Ann Gellico Carter. At the time I originally read that I was thinking "Frangelico" as in the liqueur. However, what if "Gellico" and "Ann Gellico" are some variation of "Angelica"? If the Sugar Jones Mathews of Edgefield County did in fact marry Angelica Jones Mathews of Brunswick County, VA then Willa would have been her daughter and it would make sense if Angelica's name were carried on in the names of Willa's children. In fact, I have seen at least one Brunswick County record where Angelica's name is spelled "Angelico". There is another record where it is spelled Gellica or Gellico. 1) So, if Sugar Jones Mathews did in fact travel to Brunswick County to marry another Mathews it would only make sense if they were related, or at the very least knew her prior. An alternative would be that he remained in VA after his father and brothers moved to Edgefield and only moved down after he married. 2) This in turn would mean that Sugar Jones Mathews and his brothers and father were also related to the Mathews around Little Saluda. I would really love to tie these two families together with certainty. I'm afraid that only DNA testing may be able to do it. If anyone reading this is a descendant of any of these Mathews, or if you know anyone who is I hope that we can get a male descendant to take a DNA test. Along with myself we have 5 others in a little Mathews subgroup within the Mathews DNA project who have taken the test who can all trace back to a common ancestor who was born about 1680 and lived in Virginia. With that many cross reference results we can tell for certain if this group of Mathews that Sugar Jones Mathews was a part of is related to the Isaac Mathews family. Sorry for being so long with this, there is more circumstantial evidence that I have, but this is the gist of it. Greg Matthews

Sounds intriguing, but I naturally don't click on websites of unknown origin. The 1912 passenger manifest of the Titanic was published then, has been available online for quite some time, including some "safe" websites such as the U of VA (try Googling <Titanic passenger list>). Suddenly found among the 1533 divorce papers of Henry VIII? Which papers would those be? (BTW, Henry VIII executed only two of his six wives, so was perhaps not as bad as history has painted him: the four he didn't kill formed a majority, didn't they?) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wanda Harbert" <WandaHarbert@charter.net> To: <SCEDGEFI@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 15, 2007 3:50 PM Subject: [SCEDGEFI] Fw: Titanic passenger lists!!> . I don't know when the Bells of NC and/or New Acquisition SC relocated to Edgefield District, but think that I can identify Barbara Schildknecht Bell. Several Schildknecht households arrived together in Charleston in Jan 1765 with a large group of Palatine immigrants on three ships: the Dragon, the Union and the Planter's Adventure. They were sent to settle the new Londonborough Township (first called Belfast) in SW Edgefield District, and most of them remained in that location. One of the households was that of Georg Schildknecht (b. 15 Oct 1727 in Rottenacker, Donaukreis, Württemberg, and his wife Catharina (b. ~1736). The 350-acre grant says that they arrived with 4 children. There were several young Schieldknights in the group, but no clear way to identify which ones belonged to which household. At any rate, George and Catharina also had several children born in SC. Their son Henry Shelnut (1769-1849) left an Edgefield will signed 10 Feb 1849, recorded 7 Apr 1849. Henry and his wife Mary (reportedly a Bell) had no children. His heirs included his brothers and sisters (or their survivors). One of the heirs was Barbara Bell; Henry Shelnut also left a bequest to his nephew Robert Bell. Since Barbara had the Schildknecht surname in 1787, she was probably his sister, and therefore an SC-born daughter of George and Catherine Schildknecht. Most members of the Schildknecht families and their neighbors of Londonborough and Cuffeetown Creek were active Loyalists who took refuge in Nova Scotia after the war. That had been their intended destination anyway, but the captains landed them at Charleston. The apparent siblings of Henry Shelnut either did not leave SC or else returned there. The family names listed on the will are Peggy Weaver, Betsy Dorris, Barbara Bell, William Shelnut and Andy Shelnut "or the heirs of each of the above named persons." On ages for land transactions, it was more common for a purchaser to be at least age 18, but it was not necessary. Some people made purchases (or received grants) at younger ages. I think that the head-of-household grants awarded to 13-year-old orphan girls (who arrived with that 1765 Palatine expedition) were perhaps a record! ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Ozment" <johnozment@hotmail.com> To: <scedgefi@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 10, 2007 12:59 PM Subject: [SCEDGEFI] 1793 BELL: Gift of Deed > > Does anyone have details about the BELL famiy > mentioned in books 1-12 of land records, namely > William Bell with sons William Harrison and Zachariah? > The land record was actually a "gift of deed" involving > transfer of personal effects to sons and daughters. > > I noticed a couple of land transactions involving brothers > William and Zachariah Bell in 1775 Craven Co., SC. > > I recall that William Bell of the 1800 and 1810 Edgefield Co., > SC, censuses was born 1756 to 1765. I just found you message as I returned to work after a few days off. Thank you so much for your reply. The Genealogy Library in Independence, Missouri, has this book and I have looked at it several times. I just found you message as I returned to work after a few days off. Thank you so much for your reply. The Genealogy Library in Independence, Missouri, has this book and I have looked at it several times. However, I do not know which community my Deans lived in and I cannot figure out which William Dean was the father of William Rufus Dean. I have been working on this line for decades, but I dead end in Edgefield. I am delighted that I may have found a new cousin in you. Best wishes. Does anyone have details about the BELL famiy mentioned in books 1-12 of land records, namely William Bell with sons William Harrison and Zachariah? The land record was actually a "gift of deed" involving transfer of personal effects to sons and daughters. I noticed a couple of land transactions involving brothers William and Zachariah Bell in 1775 Craven Co., SC. I recall that William Bell of the 1800 and 1810 Edgefield Co., SC, censuses was born 1756 to 1765. Thus, he might not yet have been 21 years old in 1775 (for a land transaction). Does his age matter? Would 1756 (age 19) have been good enough? It makes sense that the family was located elsewhere before 1785, and the SC population was largely located along the coast until that time. I'm not sure about the William Bell of the 1790 Edgefield Co., SC, census. There were two men over 16 with none under. Zachariah Bell was on a 1762 record of Craven Co., SC, and he bought land in 1769 in Mecklenburg Co., NC. A Genforum posting stated he was in Lancaster Co., SC, of the Camden District, but I'm not sure if that was fact or surmise. Was Zachariah born about 1741 and William H. born about 1756? Or, was there an older Zachariah? There was even a Zachariah Bell who died in 1843 in Hall Co., GA. I don't know if there's a connection. The William Bell who left the "gift of deed" in 1793 Edgefield Co., SC, was obviously the father of William H. and Zachariah and several daughters. So, was he born around 1715 or so, given Zachariah's age? That would make him about 78 in 1793. Similarly, William Bell (presumably this Wm. H.) of 1800 had three boys, one born 1784 (prob. Stephen) and two born 1790-1800 (William Jr. and __?__). But, his boys were gone by 1810. William Bell (Jr.) was up to 26 years old in 1810 and living next door to Barbara Bell. At first, I thought Barbara Bell was William's widow ... maybe still possible if a second wife. But, I noticed a 1787 Edgefield land record which she witnessed under her former name of Barbara Schildknect / Shellknit. That sounds Pennsylvanian, if you will. When the document was finally finalized, it is noted she was now Barbara Bell. I think Stephen was born before 1787 ... 1784 in fact. He was 26-44 in 1810 (with four sons) and -- if he was William's oldest boy -- he was 10-16 in 1800 as well. Stephen's first children were Catherine and Burrell, born in 1802 and 1803 (followed by William in 1805), so 1784 would be about the youngest he could be, practically speaking. Burrell had a son named Stephen born in Conecuh Co., AL, in 1834. I think I am beginning to piece the puzzle together correctly at long last, but if someone else has worked on this group, I would appreciate some help.
