    3. I am possibly related to this Foreman family by Jacob (1762-1823) and Rachael's daughter, Nancy Foreman Heard and have further information to share. But my Jacob died in 1823 and left a will. Is anyone else researching this family? Jacob Foreman d 1823 also married a Rachel and had sons Jacob and Isaac and daughter Nancy. Are these families connected. My Jacob Foreman lived in Barnwell. 3. Harriet, Thanks for this information. I found a grandchild writing about her family of Ridge Springs, mentioning Aiken. This is even though there wasn't an Aiken County, SC extant, when the grandmother was a girl in South Carolina. I decided they must have been looking at a current atlas at the time 1880-90, and the grandmother pointed to it on the map. I have Busbees, Howards, Corleys, Watsons, and Johnsons that I am researching in the Ridge Springs area. 3. Not that there is any significance to who sells land to whom, but later in the HARRISON FAMILY history I am keying, I have: "On Dec. 1, 1880, Mary s. Collins sold her 47 acres of land to James Harrison Strom, grandfather of the present [sic] governor of South Carolina. She gave her address as Graniteville, SC in Aiken County (book 5, p. 462). In 1884 William and Susan Mayson sold their land to James H. Strom and in 1886 Nancy and William Mathis sold their land to the same J.H. Strom. Nancy Mathis was Nancy Elizabeth sister of Mary Susannah." --Jessica -----Original Message----- From: Dr Constance T McNeill [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, May 28, 2004 9:03 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: The Family of Archie M Dean 1878 --=======45FF4FE======= Content-Type: text/plain; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-6B4454B5; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Thanks Linda for putting all this together. 1. [EDGEFIELD] Harrison Family Cont'd...
    2. DEUSTICE
    3. 3. No information as to daughter of James and Susannah Harrison except on 1790 census. Generation three EDWARD and MARY HARRISON had the following children: 1. JAMES M. HARRISON 2. EDWARD H HARRISON 3. ANN SAPHRONIA HARRISON 4. MARY A. E. HARRISON 5. JOHN B. HARRISON 1. JAMES M. HARRISON married MARY ________________. According to the family tradition he was a man of considerable means, large land holdings, and many slaves. My husband had as his nurse one of the former slaves, and it was within his recollection of his mother that they much preferred going down to the slave quarters, if allowed, rather than eat in the big house. JAMES M HARRISON appears for the first time on the 1830 census of Edgefield County S.C. It shows him as age 20-30 years; wife age 20-30 years; 2 females under age of 5. Do not have the 1840 census records. 1850 Census of Edgefield County, S.C. shows JAMES M HARRISON as age 48 years, born in S.C. Wife Mary Harrison, Age 45 years, born in South Carolina. Their family is also shown on this census. Under recorded date of Jan. 20, 1844, JAMES M HARRISON, L.H. MUNDY, ANNA S MUNDY, ELIAS LAGREAN [sic] sold to JOHN B. HARRISON for the sum of $600.00 three parts out of four of a plantation containing 433 acres, lying and being on waters of Cuffytown creek, Rocky Creek, adjoining on all sides by LUKE DEVORE and JAMES HARRISON. The original grant was made to CHAMP TERRY; conveyed by said TERRY to JAMES HARRISON and left to his son EDWARD HARRISON in his will and conveyed from the Commission of Equity in Edgefield District to MARY HARRISON. Since MARY HARRISON had died, the daughters married, and JOHN H married LUCINDA KILCREASE [Gilchrist?] in Nov. 1843, the original homesite of JAMES wife SUSANNAH passed into the possession of JOHN B. HARRISON his youngest grandson by purchase from the other heirs. This was left to his wife LUCINDA when he died 18853-54. JAMES M HARRISON named for his grandfather was born 1802 and died April 1870. He died intestate and on April 27, 1870, W.T. MATHIS filed a petition as Adm. to probate Judge of Edgfield Co. saying that JAMES M HARRISON departed this life on April 23, 1870 leaving children, SUSAN widow of JAMES COLLINS, JANE wife of ELBERT HARLING, ELIZABETH wife of petitioner: JOHN E HARRISON, THOMAS HARRISON, AUGUSTUS HARRISON, CHARLES H HARRISON and some grandchildren, the children of a predeceased son WILLIAM (James Wm. Who died in the war between the states), and a small personal estate of the value of $600.00 or thereabouts in said county. (Butler & Youmans Pro. Pet. Box 96, Pkg 3900, Edgefield Co. SC). On Aug. 10 1872, J.L. Addison as Atty. For Pet. JOHN E HARRISON, GEO. A. HARRISON, CHARLES H HARRISON, Mrs. M.J. HARLING and Mrs. MARY S. COLLINS, Children and heirs at law of JAMES M HARRISON late of said State and County, deceased, respectfully sheweth to the Court that JAS. M. HARRISON departed this life intestate on or about the 25th of April 1870 leaving considerable real and personal estate in said County, the above named petitioners and including ELIZABETH MATHIS wife of WM. T. MATHIS and the children of JAMES WM. HARRISON to wit: JAMES HARRISON. IDA HARRISON and LUCINDA HARRISON the three last named being minors within the age of twenty one years. The petition further shows that all of the said heirs are of age except the three minors above named, and reside in the County and the State of Edgefield, S.C., except THOMAS H HARRISON who resides in Texas and is represented by ELBERT HARLING his Attorney-in-Fact. The petition further sheweth to the court that shortly after the death of JAMES M. HARRISON letters of Adm. were duly granted to WM. T. MATHIS by virtue of an order of the court. Sold all of said personal estate except the growing crop and the portion of the stock on or about the 10th of June 1870 for more than the sum of one hundred dollars. The remaining portion of the personal estate were sold about the first of December 1870, but what amount of money the petitioners were not informed. The petitioners further sheweth that at the time of the death of JAMES M HARRISON he were owing but a small amount of money, less than $600.00 and since the sale of the personal estate part hereof has been paid by WM T MATHIS, Adm. the petitions further sheweth the Court that recently in consequences of the said W. T. MATHIS negligence and not paying the debts of his intestate all of the real estate has been sold for taxes and in July last past said lands have been sold by Sheriff of said County to satisfy judgement obtained in April last past against the said WM T MATHIS. As aforesaid at the suit of WILLIAMSON J JHOLLOWAY Exec. Of L.G. HOLLOWAY deceased for $300.00; that no one believing said judgement valid and legal, said lands were sacrificed being purchased by THOMAS ADAMS the attorneys of the heirs of L.G. HOLLOWAY deceased. The petitions further sheweth the court that they are now outstanding liabilities against said estate to wit, one sale not now owned and held by JOHN E. HARRISON for the sum of $204.30 including interest on the Estate. The Petitions further sheweth to the Court that since the 1st of Jan. 1871 they have frequently applied in person and by their agents to the said WM T MATHIS Adm. to come to an accounting for his transactions upon said Estate, to pay over the amount due in his hands to the credits of said Estate, and the balance to petitions as heirs at law, their respective amounts decreed to be due each of them according to their respective rights and intrerest from the proceeds of the sale of the personal estate and many collected on notes and accounts of said estate. Therefore the petitions pray that the said WM T MATHIS Adm. be ordered to account to the creditors and heirs at law the amounts found due each of them respectively according to their respective rights and interest. (Box 96, Pkg. 3900 Edgefield Co. S.C.) On May 26 1874 JOHN E HARRISON et al petitioners against WM T MATHIS. of Estate of JAMES M. HARRISON on lanier P.M. Williams, Elbert Harling, James E. Hamilton, and D.J. Gilchrist. (Box. 96, Pkg. 3900, Edgefield Co., S.C.)

    3. The following letter was written to Miss Harriet "Hattie" Lake, daughter of Elias Lake from her cousin Nancy Ann Tolbert of Edgefield, SC in 1867. Hattie had recently moved from Edgefield to Louisiana with her family. The Misses Nevitt, Crosby, and Clark are all siblings of my ancestors from Anderson, SC and would have been probably second or third cousins of Hattie Lake as they all had either Hutchison grandparents or g-grandparents . I would like to know who the Mrs J. Hutchison in the letter was. Below is the only relevant part of the letter-- 11 May 1867. from Nancy Ann Tolbert to Cousin Hattie.... "Some of your cousins, Miss Nevit, Miss Crosby, and Miss Clark, from Anderson, spent last week with Mrs. Huchison. They made particulaar enquiries asfter you, and regretted so much not having seen you. They spent a day with aunt Mary. Miss Nevet was at college with cousin Sarah. The little girl that was with her mother, to see you, so long since, is now a charming young lady. Mrs. J Huchison is at G., with Mrs. Manly, has been with her some time...." I won't take up bandwidth with the relationship chart, but anyone who is interested can go to this link: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=johanson&id=I19700 As my Clarke ancestors of Anderson SC have been a mystery, I've always wondered if there is an Edgefield connection. As for the Mrs J. Hutchison living in Edgefield, I have wondered what connection she had with Jean Hutchison Lake and her descendents in Edgefield. Any information would be appreciated. To son JOHN, 1 horse, 1 bed, and furniture, four head of cattle, both guns, the sideboard and secretary, one cupboard. To LAURA ANN HARRISON HOBBS, his daughter, 7 slaves on written condition that ‘if Burel E. Hobbs or any other person brings suit against JOHN HOLLINGSWORTH as ADM. of WM. H. HOLLINGSWORTH deceased to recover this property to pay damage, the said HOBBS nor his children shall never have any other way.’ [sic] The main part of the property was divided between his children, JAMES, JOHN, PICKENS, SUSANNAH, and MARY, and if any of them died leaving no children his part was to go to the other four; and if they all die but one leaving no children, that one is to have all the rest, and in case they all five die leaving no children all of the estate was to be in the hands of the S.C. Conference and their successor in office for the use of the M.E. Church. His wife Mary was appointed executrix, while a widow, and his sons JAMES and JOHN and PICKENS Executors. (Will book “D” p.208 Edgefield Dist., S.C.) A conservative estimate of the value of slaves at that time would be from about $750.00 each to $1,000.00 each, so this James Harrison was a wealthy man.” --Jessica

    2. Gaila, This area later became Barnwell County and than Aiken. This is where my Bushs, Johnsons and Reds lived. I also have Corley's, Howards and Watsons in my line. For a long time we thought Prescott Bush moved from Edgefield Co to Barnwell and finally figured out he didn't move the county lines changed. Sandra

Moses Ross was at the fall of Charlestown to the British in 1780 and signed the petition of the "Country Militia" to surrender; his signature appears between the signatures of Samuel Chandler and Thos. Compton (Charleston 1897 Yearbook). [Both Samuel Chandler and Thos. Compton can be proven to have lived in that part of Camden District that became Sumter District.] Moses Ross' signature on the petition is "a match" to his signature in his Audited Account #6615 at the SC Archives for 69 days duty from 1-1-1782 to 12-15-1782. State of South Carolina To Moses Ross ... To 69 days Mil. & Lt. Drag. pay a 2/4 Day ... Camden District Moses Ross personally appeared and Swear the above Acct. is Just and True. - Sworn before me the 3rd day of August 1784. - Wm. Martin J.P. Moses Ross South Carolina was unable to pay at one time the entire debt owed to her soldiers, but gave them an Indent for the amount owed, paying interest for some years. All of the following was taken from papers in Audited Account file for Moses Ross. Indent X148 dated 8-30-1785 issued to Moses Ross: 8 pounds, one shilling, Principal; 11 shillings, 3 pence, Annual Interest. "Recd 30th August 1785 Full Satisfaction for the within, in an Indent X148 .. Moses Ross" Moses Ross signed a paper that on 6-13-1786, he had received 3 years Interest. "I do here by [difficult to read, looks like assign] over my Right Title and interest of this within indent to John Brownlee for [difficult to read, looks like value] Recd. Sept. 29th 1787 [signed] Moses Ross." On 1-4-1788, John Brownlee assigned the account to William Poole. There is no clue in the above Audited Account file as to where Moses Ross was when he signed for receiving his Indent on 8-30-1785, for the interest on 6-13-1786, the sale of the Indent on 9-29-1787. One John Brownlee was living in the city of Charleston on the 1790 SC Census, but this does not necessarily mean that Moses Ross was living in Charleston when the Indent was sold. Another John Brownlee was living in Abbeville Co, SC in 1790. Nothing more was found for Moses Ross in the area that became Sumter District records. If this is indeed Moses, son of Reuben Ross, his father apparently died before 1788 probably in SC. His mother died in 1796 location unknown. His brother Benjamin moved to the Lincoln Co, NC area and later Burke Co, NC, his brother Stephen Ross moved from Clarendon Co, SC to Abbeville Co, SC. His brother Solomon I am unsure about but may be the Solomon Ross found in Rutherford Co, NC 1810-1820, Sister Hannah married 1st unknown Coleman and 2nd Nathaniel Marion, sister Elizabeth married Jesse Hilton, sister Priscilla I have no further information on. 3. That "where's the Ridge?" question had me confused for years! All the SC histories and references just take it for granted that everybody knows where that is. I've never been there, so it wasn't at all obvious to me. But I finally found out. It's the somewhat higher elevation that angles through (old) Edgefield from NW to SE and defines the watershed. Creeks to the north of the Ridge flow into the Saluda, creeks to the south flow into the Savannah. Its location is roughly equivalent to the current county line between Saluda and Edgefield counties. You'll find the town of Ridge Spring near the SE corner of Saluda Co, near its border with Aiken--it refers to "that" Ridge. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tree Mother" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 28, 2004 10:59 AM Subject: Re: (Edgefield) Calhoun Journal-Jesse Lott- Near the Ridge question Again the geography of SC has me perplexed. In the Lott estate it says Sarah Lott (near the Ridge). What is the Ridge? Where was it located? Have seen this referred to before but have not found a map with a notation of the Ridge.
