    1. Need good book on Charleston
    2. Tree Mother
    3. Hello: I am currently reading and enjoying The Expansion of South Carolina. Now I need a book on the founding and growth of Charleston from it beginnings. If someone would advise me on a good book with good citations and notes, I would appreciate it very much. Began a sneak preview of the Indian Records Books yesterday. Oh to own my own copies and be able to read them cover to cover. Library does not lend these books. I don't know if they are available from the SC Archives but if so I expect they would chew up next years genealogy budget. Thank you all for the interesting postings. 3. There's a connection between the families of Bowman and Wright, who were in Laurens Co SC by 1786. But Sarah (widow and administratrix of Jacob Bowman Sr.) said that her father was Laurens/Lawrence Stephens (on a Laurens Co SC deed dated 11 Sep 1788). On the same day, Sarah Right [Wright] appointed Jacob Bowman [Jr.: the Sr. had just died] to be her attorney re the estate of George Bowman in VA. Was Sarah Wright the mother, sister or daughter of Jacob Bowman Sr., or of George Bowman in VA? I've never had any occasion to trace this family, don't know zip about it. But every little reference could be useful to somebody else. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 02, 2004 4:33 PM Subject: Re: Edgefield queries on Bowman family on Reedy River The JACOB BOWMAN family were in Laurens Co, SC. 3. --=======1C1F5FB2======= Content-Type: text/plain; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-71C03DEB; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Recently, while checking some old Saluda Sentenial's for information the following was found. I had her marriage to Joseph Buffington, Jr. who is buried at Old Gassaway UMC Church Cemetery and her marriage to Joseph Elijah Berry who is buried next to her at Trinity. But who is the Palmer??? Also notice that this obit indicates that Barr's Chapel is in Elizabeth County. the only Barr's Chapel anyone knows anything about is the one in Edgefield. Her parents are not listed there, but could be in one of the unmarked graves. Thought this might interest someone. Connie Aged Lady Passes - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth C. Berry, known to her host of friends as "Aunt Mollie" and the wife of Mr. Joe Berry, passed on to her reward at her home about 5 miles north west of Saluda at the age of 81 years, 7 months, 14 days of June 17, 1931. Mrs. Berry was born on November 3, 1849, the daughter of John Jacob Long and Martha E. (Fulmer) Long. The sacred ashes of these dear ones have slept in their narrow home in Barr's Chapel Church, Elizabeth County (Edgefield?), since 1892 and 1896, respectively. Although Mrs. Berry had been in bed for nearly a year and suffered intensely she never lost her cheerfil disposition until the last few hours when her pain became so intense that seh became unconscious. She was beloved by all who knew her in the beauty of her Christian life and kindly disposition to all with whom she came in contact. One has gone from among us, whom both friends and family will miss, and whose place can never be filled, but we are comforted with the fact that we can go where she is, if she can't return to us. She has been a member of the Lutheran church since ealry in life. However, the names of the different churches to which she belonged, are not known, she has for more than 25 years been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at which place whe was laid to rest, among crowds of friends who had learned to love her and the bereaved family who mourn the loss of their loved one. Funeral services were conducted from the church with Rev. Lewis Koon in charge. Special music was offered by Mess [sic] A. T. Goff, J. N. DeLoache, Zeb Coleman. Interment took place on the family plot in the churchyard. Mrs. Berry is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. J. C. Thomas, Danville, Va., three sons, W. E. Palmer, Greenwood; Mose W. Buffington, Edgefiedl; J. L. Buffington, Saluda. Two children went on before her, a daughter in 1888 and a son in 1908. Twenty-five grandchildren and eight great grand children are left. As I recall I have several ancestors buried there: Samuel Roper, Anna Martha Hammond Roper, and Susan Curry among others. I visited there in the fall of 1995 and found the painting on the celing of the church of particular interest. It was a geometric design done with great care. I have often wondered how that came about.. The interior of the church had an amazing acoustic quality. So, thanks again. 3. The Reedy River starts in northernmost Greenville County and pretty much runs all through the county, then into Laurens Co. and on - I believe - until it runs into the Saluda River somewhere west of Columbia, SC, but I'm not sure exactly where - possibly lower Laurens Co. You will find deeds citing the Reedy in both Greenville and Laurens Counties as well as deeds in Old 96 Dist., Abbeville, and even some from Old Spartanburg. This happens due to what I call "fluid boundaries." These are lines that continually change, but the folks may not have actually moved! Our little state had loads of people coming through (migrating in and migrating out), and it went through many changes in just a few short decades! Hope this helps some of you out there who find it easy to get confused in SC! God bless, Dolores Miller Pringle - my families just came through and stopped!!!

    1. Wardlaw family
    2. Randall Frye
    3. The Western Auto store in my hometown of Whitmire (Newberry County) was owned by the Wardlaw family. They were natives of Greenwood County. Present day Greenwood and Abbeville counties are home to many Wardlaws (McCormick, too, I think). I'm thinking the area around Troy and Bradley in Greenwood County was where many of their early settlements were. This would be on the opposite side of Greenwood County from the Reedy River. There is a Wardlaw Academy (private school) somewhere in this area, but its exact location escapes me at the moment.
