Proved by the oath of James Oliver the 14th Aug. 1820 & same time qualified Thomas Garrett as executor there to. Jn. Timkins, O.E. D. Recorded Jan 4, 1821. Several familiar names paid in 1821 were Stephen White, Thomas Garrett, Lyon, Martin. These were payments due from estate, not legatees. William Coursey named a legatee to Jesse's will. Must have married into family. [Richard N. Gookins, Gookin Genealogy: Line of William Hill, Appendix A1-A14 states that daughter of Jesse, Susannah Hill m. William Coursey.] Believe this to be husband of Susannah Cosey (Coursey) found in deeds and in 1840-1860 Edgefield Co. census w/o William. A William Coursey purchased 1 Bull and 1 saddle Nov 10 1820. On Dec 10, 1821 he purchases 1 grindstone, 2 [ ], 1 bed and furniture, 1 negro child Betsey from the estate Sale of Jesse Hill. The word legatee was not by their names Wm. P. Hill 194.22 [Jort?] Hill 218.00 2/9/1820 W. February 1820 I have researched quite a bit into the White, Welch, and McFatrick connections with this family. Several wills are quite informative. There is a Susannah Coursey living with a White family in 1850 with several Coursey children, Uel (10) and Catherine (9). She is too old to be their mother, but is consistent with Susannah Hill Coursey, and probably a grandmother. Don't know whos children they are yet. Here are the notes on Susannah Hill Coursey that I have compiled thus far. LDS REcords give a variety of different information about Susannah: IGI Record Batch# F823364, Sheet 4 - Susannah b. 1789 SC to Jesse Hill and Mrs Elizabeth Hill IGI Record Batch# 8530805, sheet 17 - Susannah b. 5 Aug 1794, Randolph Co., NC to Jesse and Mary Prichard or Pritchard IGI Record Film# 447934 - Susannah b 5 Aug 1794, Dack Creek, Guilford, NC to Jesse Hill and Mary Pritchard IGI Record Film# 457363 -Susannah b 5 Aug 1794, NC to Jesse and Mary Hill. Or William the son of John Coursey who died in 1812, Old Edgefield Dist, SC?? Some of the oldest members knew her but could not tell whether she was a member or not. Or are they grandchildren of another child of Susannah? I lead toward the latter, but w/o proof. Other circumstancial evidence that Susannah Coursey is in fact Susannah Hill, is noted in this 1850 census: two doors down from Abner White and William White (with Susan Coursey) is Joshua Hill, oldest son of Col. John Hill, his wife Frances and three children. Col John Hill was the brother of Susannah Hill who m. a Coursey. I don't think it coincidence that these families are all together and until we find the solid document, we can keep building our circumstantial case. 1860 Edgefield Cold Springs, pg 68/136, hh# 1049/1036 [transcription book, have not seen original] William White 58, Farmer - $100, SC Synthia White 38 ca 1822 , SC Coursey, Susan, age *56 - b. Robertson 10 July 1872 - 14 June 1947 [Dessaux] Robertson 19 Feb 1894 - ?? ?? ???? I believe that the mother of my John Franklin may have been a Harriett Robertson, as I find her name on a death certificate of a Mary Jane Coursey Arthur in Augusta Ga., who I believe is the sister of John F. Coursey. But I am searching for more info. on the Robertson's of the area. Harriett d. before 1850 census and Uel Coursey remarried to an Elizabeth Unknown. [1850 census age of wife does not work with 1840 census age of wife, and she is too young to be the mother of the first 2 for sure and 3rd probably] Does anyone have any info. on these two folks, or other Robertsons of the area ca 1820-1850. I will look for L. J. Robertson's death cert. when I get a chance at the Camden Archives, and post it. I checked the 1850 Edgefield Co. census records for possible Robertson, and only found two of an age to be the parent/s of a Robertson female b. ca 1820 - 1825. 1. RE: Folks mentioned in the will of Dr. Samuel Perryman, Edgefield Dist, SC, 1838
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. Audrey Pool posted the following: "PERRYMAN, Dr Samuel - Box 75, Pack 1843: > > Will dated May 7, 1838. Wife: Sarah A. PERRYMAN, Zebulon Rudolph, Jr, Dr John P. BARRATT, Richard WATSON. Wit: Edna CALDWELL, Margaret A. HOLLOWAY, Simon PATTERSON. Chn: Wm, Sam'l, Richard Mumford PERRYMAN. 'Plantation in Lounds Co, AL owned by Dr. J. P. BARATT (BARRETT) and myself be sold and divided between my wife and chn. That the amt. owe me by Jas HAGOOD of Lounds Co., AL, formerly of Edgefield, SC be given back to said HAGOOD. Unto Hardy WHITE my colt.' Brothers and sistrers: Alex'r, Milton T. PERRYMAN, Martha GALLAUGHRER, Nancy MEDLOCK. 'My business in the hands of Beckham VAUGHAN of Lounds Co, AL be closed by him at least by ...etc." Abbeville, SC... I find some of the names very interesting and think that they are folks in my files, but not ones I am really working on. Zebulon Rudolph married Mary Elizabeth Watson. Mary Elizabeth Watson is the daughter of a Richard Watson but he died November 30, 1824. However he had a son Richard Watson. Dr. Samuel Perryman married Sarah. Richard Watson also had a daughter named Sarah for whom I have no husband. These next ones are of great interest to me as they seem to connect to my Dean line, desc. of William (1765-1830) and Nancy Bryant Dean (1764 - 1826). HARDY WHITE: I have a Hardy White married a Jane Clark, but have little info, other than the fact that they were named in the Will of Henry Clark made 8 April 1840, Edgefield Co, SC Proven May 4, 1840, so have Jane's siblings from that will. Since it was sent to me by Tom Sheffield, another Dean research of the desc. of William Dean and Nancy Bryant, which contained a William Dean Jr. who married a Catherine Clark, neice of Jane Clark who married Hardy White, this seems to connect them to my Dean line. MARGARET HOLLOWAY Margaret Holloway is probably Margaret Dean, daughter of William Dean Sr. and Nancy Bryant. She married Caleb Holloway. By 1840 census, Caleb Holloway and Margaret Dean are found in Chambers Co. AL. Find it interesting to find so many names I am familar with. Billie Jones Camden, SC [email protected]

    3. Hi, Billie and Debra. This family definitely had a habit of recycling names! Gasper Gallman (b. 1749, d. 24 Sep 1819) and Jemima Sellers (d. 17 Nov 1827) left three surviving sons: 1) Harmon (12 Feb 1779 - 28 May 1871); Benjamin (23 Oct 1780 - 5 Oct 1855); and 3) Daniel (will signed 26 May 1829). They did not have a daughter named Jemima. The Gasper Gallman who married Fannie McClendon on 21 Nov 1838 in Edgefield was the son of Daniel and Lydia Gallman, so the grandson of Gasper and Jemima Gallman. Daniel and Lydia had a second child, Jemima, who was a minor in 1829. She married James Arthur on 14 Dec 1834 in Edgefield. I haven't seen a Jemima born in ~1810 who would carry the surname Gallman in 1850. Benjamin Gallman and wife Sarah ("Sally") Ryan (d. 1860, widow of George B. Moore in 1806) did not have a daughter named Jemima, per his 1855 will. It is possible that eldest son Harmon had a daughter Jemima who did not marry, but it is difficult to see why she would be in a household other than that of her father in 1850 (unless she didn't get along with her stepmother). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lee and Billie Jones" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, July 13, 2004 9:48 AM Subject: Re: Gasper Cooper Gallman in Edgefield Debra, I checked a file I have from another researcher with some misc. families in it and found this info. I keep getting new ones, answering the ones that don't take long and saving the ones I want to work on, then new ones come in and I dont get back to the old. Have a 2 year old request by HC to share my research on the two Jordan Holloways, and just have not finished getting it all together. Bonnie, Connie sent me some info. that came from you with info. from Jones Butler III, as she knew some of these folks were mine. I have made some comments and provided support for my conclusions below. RE: the Jordan Butler line. I don't know much about his ancestors, but do have the same ones back to Daniel Butler m. Catherine Johnson. My only reference for their children is Linda Baughn, 9940 Nita Ave., Chatsworth, CA 91311 <[email protected]>, so I cannot verify them with my own research. Would love to have any documentation that you both are using to support the attachments. But I have worked a lot on the descendants of his son John Butler, as his desc. marry into the Jordan, Waits, Trotter, Burnett, May, Carter families that I research. I have developed those lines quite a bit with several wills worked on in the process that provided new data and proved some of the old data out there to be in error. I will gladly share whatever you want on these folks and will send a registry with notes and sources for you to compare and then we can discuss discrepancies. Bonnie, please share it with Jones Butler III as well, since his email address was not in the message Connie forwarded to me. Connie, One thing I CAN tell you is WRONG: Leannah Holloway Butler is NOT the daughter of Lewellyn and Sophronina Unknown Holloway. She is the daughter of Elijah Holloway and Mary Jordan, who is the sister of Nancy Jordan who married John Butler. I base that on the wills of John Jordan and Elijah Hollway which I have copied below: John Jordan's obituary was published in the Edgefield Advertiser, August 14, 1851 "Departed this life at his residence in Edgefield District, on July 21, 1851, in the 76th year of his age, John Jordan. He joined Good Hope Baptist Church in 1832 and was ordained a Deacon in 1834. He lost his wife some years before his own death, but left surviving him, children and grandchildren." [Edgefield Death Notices and Cem. Records, p. 87] Will of John Jordan [Box 61 # 250], 9 December, 1850, proved 31 July 1851 Proved on the oath of Elijah Towles one of the subscribing witnesses this 31 July 1851. Qualified James Adams Executor this 4th day of August 1851. Recorded in Book D. p. 425 State of South Carolina, Edgefield District} In the name of God Amen. I John Jordan of the District and State aforesaid being weak and infirm in body but of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and ordain the following as my last will and testament. First. It is my will and desire that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid out of my estate by my executor herafter named as soon as the money be collected from the sale of my estate after my death. Second. I will and direct that my Executor herafter named make sale on a credit of twelve months of all my estate both real and personal and the monies arising from said sale after the payment of debts be divided in manner following - Third. I give and bequeath unto my grand daughter Martha Jordan our feather bed, bed stead and furniture. Fourth I give and bequesth the remainder of my estate to the following named eprsons to wit - One seventh part to the deceased daughter Mary Holloway [*wife of Elijah Holloway] One seventh part to the children of my deceased son John Jordan. One seventh part to my daughter Nancy Butler One seventh part to to my daughter Rachael Adams [married one of the many James Adams men] One seventh part to my daughter Anny Sanders One seventh part to my daughter Dizy Morse [I think she married Whitfield Morse/Moss ??] One seventh part to to my son Levi Jordan. Lastly I nominate constitute and appoint my son-in-law James Adams executor to this my last will and testament revoking all other wills by me heretofore made. In witness wherof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of December, 1850. Interest paid out as well as the principle of $110] Ends here - never see a final accounting and note that James Adams son-i-law and Executor does not show he was paid in full for he and his wife's share. ------------------------------------- The heirs who receive $110 are all the children of Elijah Hollway by his first wife Mary Jordan, who I discovered only a few years ago. Elijah's will always sounded strange to me with the wording, and it makes lots more sense when you understand that Sophia Rowe, his wife in the will, is the 2nd wife and the mother of only the last 3 children: Elijah and Mary Jordan are my 4th great-grandparents thru their daughter Emily Holloway who married Thomas Jefferson Burnett. Elijah wrote his will in 1862, and it was filed in 1869. A full transcription of the probate record on microfilm at the SC State archives follows: Estate of Elijah Holloway deceased [Box 96, Pkg 3892] In apc. with William Haltiwanger, Executor, Nov 1, 1862. March 1929 The use of died before March 19, 1929 comes from the fact that they are NOT mentioned in probate records of Margaret Dean Holloway, sister of Bryant Dean, father of Eliza in her AL probate records. More on that later. The naming pattern of the family certainly points to the Bryant Dean and Trecy Hill families as follows: According to my research of census records, Bryant and Treacy Hill Dean has two unknown children, a son and a daughter, listed in the 1830 Edgefield co census: p. 214 with parents and the 1840 Edgefield Co. SC Census, born between 1815 - 1820. In researching the Lott families, I came upon death cert. that listed James Neal and Eliza Dean as parents to a spouse of a LOTT. The date of birth for the Eliza Dean listed with James Neal in the census records puts her date of birth in that range. We MAY have found the missing daughter. Death certificates of some of their children specifically call their mother Eliza Dean and their father James Neal. Of course, as true researchers, this is not yet proof! But notice the names of the following partial list of James & Eliza Dean Neal's children: ..... 2 William NEAL b: Abt. 1845 [Bryant's father was William] ..... 2 Treacy NEAL b: Abt. 1848 [Bryant's wife was Treacy] ..... 2 James NEAL b: Abt. 1852 [Treacy Hill Dean had brother James] ..... 2 Lod NEAL b: Abt. 1854 [Bryant's father-in-law was Lodowick Hill m. Susannah Grigsby] ..... 2 Susan NEAL b: Abt. 1857 [possibly a Susannah for Susannah Grigsby] VERIFIED: May, 2003: On April 30, 2003, I received the Final Settlement records of Margaret Dean Holloway, Chambers Co, AL, d. 1887 (looked up for me by Jacky Stancil). Those records contain the following named Eliza Neal as a legatee: "Eliza Neal, over 21 years old, resides in SC, P.O. Fruit Hill, Edgefield Co, SC....... the above named (is a living child) of Bryant Dean who was a brother of the testatrix." She is listed as the mother of Virginia Neal Lott in her death Certificate, 1920 Edgefield Co, SC # 9437. Tombstone in the Lott Family Cemetery, Hwy 23, Johnston, Edgefield Co, SC, states: "Our Mother. Mrs. Eliza Neal, wife of Mr. James Neal, born June 1818, died Jan 1880. His first invention was conceived in 1969 and patented in January, 1972 as a high-speed direct binary-to-binary coded decimal converter. His second patent was for a solid-state circuit for high-speed scaling of the binary numbers used in telemetry digital systems. He had additional patents in 1976, 79, 83, and 89. The patents were assigned to NASA for government use without royalty payment, with him receiving a nominal cash award and the publication of a NASA Technical Bulletin and Brief with the details of each invention. In July 1974, NASA recognized him with a Certificate of Recognition. The Spaceport News of December 12, 1974, carried a feature article on “P.C.” when he was working on his 4th patent, mentioning his encouraging others to bring their ideas to the attention of the patent counsel. 2. >>1922 - Death Cert. #6068, Saluda Co, SC >>W. H. Hazel >>Male, white, widowed, mechanic >>b. June (12), 1854, SC >>father: L. B. Hazel, SC >>mother: Martha Smith, SC Billie, The information you supplied above, L.B. Hazel and Martha Smith are my kinfolk. Their daughter, which you list also, Kittie Hazel married my Great Grandfather Eli Mathew Barnes. My grandfather, son of Eli and Martha, Arthur Smith Barnes, was named after her father. I have copied most of the census records on this line sometime back in the late 1960's. I didn't find this family in the 1860 census but did find them in the 1870 and 1880. I don't have much more about L.B. Hazel except that the B stands for Berry according to my father. >> I could not find him in the Zoar Methodist Church Cem. Records to verify the >> date of birth as the 12th, which was very difficult to read in his death cert. Were you looking in "Our Saluda County Ancestors Vol. II" cem. records? I have all three volume of this work and Zoar Meth. Church is in vol. II. I looked and found only 4 Hazel's. None of them ring any bells with me. But I get the feeling I have already told you this before. If so, please forgive me.
