Billie, I'm not related to this line but noticed you had a Butler Williams in the chart below. A back issue of the Georgia Genealogist contains Bible records for a Butler Williams b. 4-23-1799 who married Sarah Williams b. 5-28-1809. Other surnames include Cooper; Dickson, Haden, and Black. If anyone is interested in the full record, please let me know. I will post the info to the group. Another interesting interaction with some of my folks: You wrote: 1 May 1804. Caleb Holloway Fr [sic: Sr. or Jr.?] to John Whitley Sr, deed, 1 May 1804 $300, four hundred forty acres, except three acres sold to Abney Mays situate on Halfaway Swamp Creek, the same being part of three grants, one granted to Edward Burk, one to Daniel Coleman, and one to Reuben Holloway. Adjoining lines of Abney Mays, Keheley, Henry Hazle, Ollyman Dodgen. Proven 25 May 1805 by Dodgen, Wm Robinson JP, 5 Nov 1805. [Note: despite coincidence of names, this appears to be Daniel Coleman of the unrelated Coleman family of Halfway Swamp, not a Goleman of Mountain Creek.] Source: Wells, Deed Book 26, p. 102. Transcribed by Reba Murphey. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------ Harriett, I call this Caleb Sr. and he is another son of Reuben Holloway, and a brother to the Jordan above. There are several Calebs that had to be sorted as well. Quite confusing, and I still haven't figured them all out. 1 Caleb HOLLOWAY, Sr b: 1767 d: August 20, 1840 Edgefield Co, SC There are records of a Caleb m. to an Elizabeth, another to Mary Weeks, "Edgefield Death Notices and Cemetery Records" by Carlee McClendon Obituary from Edgefield Advertiser Issue August 20, 1840: "Departed this life on Aug. 20, 1840 at his residence in Edgefield District, Caleb Holloway, Sr. in the 73rd year of his age. after a protracted illness of just 7 months. He left behind him an amiable wife. He was an active member of the Baptist Church for 30 years, the greater part of which time, he served as a Deacon." [why don't they mention wife and parents names in these early obits!!] Caleb who married Elizabeth does not name any children, but neices and nephews. Therefore I assume they had no children. However, in the 1840 census, living in the household with Caleb and wife, was a 1 f 15<20. who was she? There is also a Caleb who married Mary Weeks. Since HC states that Caleb's wife Sarah Elizabeth Nobles was previously married, would it be too much of a stretch to assume that Caleb was married before. Maybe the resolution to the problem of which Caleb is which is that he married twice, and is the same Caleb who died in 1840. [ no proof yet of Sarah Elizabeth Nobles marriage] ALERT: I think the will below is for the Caleb who married Mary Weeks. There are too many entries in the will for Weeks, and the signature (mark on the permission to hold an estate sale is that of MARY Holloway, not Elizabeth. So the death date may go to another Caleb?? Or his Caleb married twice and mentioned in the previous paragraph. "Wills and Deeds: Edgefield Co, SC" Compiled for the Old 96th Dist Chapter of DAR - located at Camden Archives, Camden SC in DAR library: p. 54-55 Proved on oath of Luke Culbreath and Wiley Turner, 9 Sept. 1840, qualified Lewis Reynolds -. O. Towles, OED recorded in Will Book D, pg. 115-116, Sept 1840. [Abstract] Because of Conflicting data (Some have him as son of Reuben, others as son of William. Did he marry Mary Weeks or Sarah Elizabeth Nobles?) , I copied and transcribed the full text of Calebs will. *Will of Caleb Holloway, Sr. Recorded 5 Sept 1840 Isaac Boles Exor. Question.. the father of JF McManus.. I have in my file John Samuel McManus...1836-1916. Samuel was with Co C, 19th Regt, SC Volunteers, when he was captured at Atlanta on Aug 21, 1864. He went to MO/KA after the war and changed his name to Linn Andres ... married and started a new family...buried Forest Hill Cemetary, Kansas City, (Jackson County), MO. Does anyone else have this info? Or know anymore about it? I copied this somewhere long ago. He is not my immediate line so I had no reason to dig deeper but if true, its interesting. What happened to wife Martha? and his kids? Ann

She married Avery Franklin, who was born circa 1833 in Edgefield SC; he died in Point Lookout POW camp on 7 Dec 1864. Need info on her parents and when & where she is buried. I’m prone to believe that she probably died in Aiken SC where all of her children were born. Thanks Sandra

Searching for a connection between the Pope, Stringer and Travis families of Edgefield County, South Carolina. My great great great grandfather Jefferson Davis Stringer was born in Edgefield County, South Carolina in 1811. He married my grtgrtgrt grandmother Jane Pope in November 1833/34 in Harris County, Georgia. Jefferson Stringer's parents were Jonathon Stringer and Martha Williams. I have found recent information that points my Jane Pope's family to the Travis family of Edgefield County, SC. The only info I have on my Jane Pope is that she was born in Georgia in 1813 and died very young in 1846 in Harris County, Georgia. She was the mother to my grtgrt grandmother Melissa Stringer Hollis. With the recent info I've found I thought maybe she was also born in Edgefield County, SC and traveled to Harris County, GA with my grtgrtgrt grandfather Jefferson Stringer. Jefferson Stringer was also a Primitive Baptist Preacher. He married two more times after Jane Pope died, to Nancy Myhand and Caroline Myhand, they were sisters. Jefferson and Caroline moved our family to Texas around 1860. I thought someone else who has researched these families might be able to help me out. Thank you, Ron Hesdorff [email protected] San Antonio, TX

Hello LIst, My aunt, who died 10 years ago, had some papers in her things that she had handwritten. One was that her grandfather, Jessee Williams, was a Black Moor. This has always confused me. Any suggestions or information? Thank you, Bonnie

Sunnie Talbert Fisher, daughter of Edward Holmes Talbert of Garrett Plantation and Lemie Mays, granddaughter of William Jasper Talbert, US Congress, was probably the author a set of MAYS family pages in the Tompkins Library in Edgefield. In those pages she refers to the "Family Bible" and "family documents." Are there still Talbert descendants in or around Edgefield? I would like to talk to a family member to get a good citation for the Family Bible if it is still in existence. Does anyone know if the Family Bible has ever been transcribed and published? Thanks! I went back to my ongoing (slowly) trancription of the Dry Creek Baptist Church minutes and found this original record of the sale of land for Dry Creek, which seems to have be land belonging to James & Rite Bruce. In studying the post of Wanda Norman [email protected] to the Hill list, July 2004, I have found some conflicting info based on the data I have accumulated. Since I have not researched the family outside of SC, I am interested in specific verifications of the dates and locations for the following and reconciliation of the conflicting info. I have. The numbered info. was from Wanda's post. The info. beginning with * are my comments, questions, etc. Most of my information came from: 1: Richard N. Gookins, A History and Genealogy of the Gookin Family : Line of William Hill, (Salem, Oregon, Revised Edition, 1991). 2. East Goes West: History of the Craft-Hill-Harris...Families, (Alta DeShazer and George W. Craft). 3. List of children sited to the Will of William Hill, but I note I don't have it transcribed into my notes. Would love a copy if someone has it. I am seeking primary sources for dates and locations for the children and their spouces of William and Susannah Smithers Hill. One of the sources that Wanda sited was Hill Family bible. I would love information on that and a listing of the actual information from the Bible/s. --------------------------------------- 1. John Hill *When I discussed John with Richard Fischer, a much more knowledgable Hill researcher than I, and checked the Book "The History and Gen. of the Gookin Family" by Richard N. Gookins, 1991 (containing 267 pages of Hill family research), both indicate that John Hill was William's oldest son "who died young" , therefore explaining his exclusion from his father's will. Does anyone have a date of marriage for William and Susannah Smithers. Is it possible John was the son of one of the other wives? --------------------------------------- 2. Ewell Hill, b. 1737, Caroline Co. VA and d. 7 Oct 1832 in Abbeville District, SC. *I have a birthdate of ca 1755, quite a bit later than the 1737 date given by Norma. "A Collection of Upper South Carolina Genealogical and Family Records, Volume II" contains his will, and he names a daughter Elizabeth Hughes. But I have no wife for him. His will also names the following heirs. They most like are children of James and Elizabeth Hill Hughes, but I have no proof of that connection: July Williams, Catherine HUGHES, Ann PALMER, Thomas HUGHES, Frances HUGHES, James HUGHES Junr., Pamealy HUGHES. Any idea who he married, and info. on the birthdate discrepancy? If I connect to this Hill family, my ggg-grandfather Ewell Coursey b. 1818, Old Edgefield Dist, SC is probably names from this Ewell Hill, who would be his Uncle. -------------------------------------------------------- 3.William Hill, b. 1737, Caroline Co. VA., and d. abt. Feb. 1785 in Guilford, Stokes Co. NC. He m. Hannah Elizabeth Halbert 1758 in Guilford, Stokes Co. NC. She was b. 1742, Caroline Co. VA., and d. abt. 1800 in NC. *I have his death date as Sept 9, 1982 Rockingham Co, NC. Does anyone have the WILL or ESTATE PAPERs for this William? I have no dates for his wife. --------------------------------------------------------- 5. Elizabeth Hill, b. 18 Sep 1747, Caroline Co. VA., and d. 6 Nov. 1836 in Belton, SC. She m. William Anson Halbert Jun 1765 in Anderson Co. VA. He was b. 14 Oct. 1744 in Caroline Co. VA., and d. 28 Dec. 1808, Anderson Co. VA. *Regarding Elizabeth Hill - note that she died in Belton, SC. I notice that other locations are given as Anderson Co., VA. I am not familiar enought yet with the VA. counties, but I do know that Belton, SC is in Anderson Co, SC. Could that be the right location. [I have no knowledge of this, it just struck me as a possibility, and quite a coincidence if they had lived in Anderson Co. VA and then Anderson Co, SC. *Need sources for dates and locations for he and his wife. ------------------------------------------------------- 6. Robert Hill, b. 17 Feb 1751/52, Caroline Co. VA. and d. 2 Aug 1834 in Germantown, Stokes Co. NC. He married Martha Halbert Sep 1769 in VA. She was b. 1747, Caroline Co. VA. and dd. 20 Sep 1833 in Germantown, Stokes Co. NC. *Need sources for dates and locations for he and his wife. ------------------------------------------------ 7. Daniel Hill, b. 16 Oct 1756, Caroline Co. VA. and d. 28 May 1826, Williamson Co. TN. He married Martha Patsy Hickman, 16 Oct 1779, Surry Co. NC. She was b.16 Oct. 1758 in Albemarle Co. VA. and d. 20 Apr. 1845 in Franklin, Williamson Co. TN. *Need sources for dates and locations for he and his wife. The East goes West source I cited above gives his dates. ------------------------------------------------ 8. James Hill, b. abt. 1760, Caroline Co. VA., and d. 17 Sep 1835 in Lincoln Co. NC. He m. Anne Robinson 10 Mar 1785. *I don't have a date of death for him, but I have his location of death as possibly Abbeville, SC, so would be interested in the proof of his date of death and his still being in NC when he died. The info. I have from East Goes west gives his wife as "Mary". ------------------------------------------------ 9. Jesse Hill, b. bet. 1759-1761 in Caroline Co. VA., and d. 13 Jul 1818. He m. Mary Pittman Fowler bet. 1759-1761 in Caroline Co., Va. This is where I would connect thru their daughter Susannah m. William Cossey per Jesse's will. I figure he is one of Several William Courseys in SC at the time. HE died in Edgefield Dist, SC, I have read his original will at the SC STate Archives. "Edgefield Co, SC Wills 1787-1836" by James E. and Vivian Wooley gives some information on the will of Jesse Hill: p. 132 [I read actual will and inserted some info for clarification. Several items were left out of Wooley's extraction [Box 15 pkg 541, Edgefield Co]. Will post it in a different message. ------------------------------------------------ 10. Joel Hill, b. 26 May 1763, Caroline Co. VA., d. 7 Jan 1843, Jackson Co. Ark., m. Ann Watson, 16 Oct 1791, Richmond Co., Ark. She was b. 10 Oct 1773 and d. aft. 5 May 1855 in Jackson Co. Ark *I got a little bit of info. on him from the followin web site plus the two other sources I cited above. http://edge.edge.net/~gbhill/wmsmi001.htm#id6112 I don't have any dats for Ann Watson, but have her name as Anna Watson. *There is a large Watson family in Old Edgefield Dist, SC, that might have moved from VA to Edgefield with the Hills. The families may be connected, but I have no research on the early connections. My ggrand-uncle married a Watson in Edgefield Co SC, in December 13, 1888. -------------------------------------------------- 11. Joshua Hill, b. 26 May 1763, Caroline Co. VA, and d. 20 Jun 1855, Anderson Co. SC He m. Nancy Wyatt Collier, 8 Dec 1789 in Abbeville District, SC. She was b. 19 Sep 1769 in VA. and d. in Y.[did I cut off something or was this the way it was??] *I have conflicting info, but w/o comparable source documentation, don't know what is right. Undocumented info on: <http://edge.edge.net/~gbhill/wmsmi001.htm> July, 2002. [Home page: http://edge.edge.net/~gbhill/] JOSHUA2 HILL (William1); buried at Sandover/China Grove, Abbeville Dist., SC; born May 26, 1763 at Caroline Co., VA; married Nancy Wyatt Collier Dec 8, 1789 at Abbeville, SC; died Jun 20, 1865 at Abbeville, SC, at age 102. *NOTE: Date of death of 1865 is off by 10 years of what Wanda sent. Also location of death. Can anyone cite proof of one or the other. *NOTE the burial in said to be in Abbeville Co, SC rather than in Anderson Co. In the book "formation of counties", we know that both areas that became Anderson Co. (in 1826) and Abbeville Co. (1785) were both in the Old 96th Dist. of SC. However, the land areas were never a part of each other. I don't hve any Abbeville or Anderson Cem. records at home to check it, but will add it to my to do list. Another researcher who has collected massive cem. records states that China Grove Cem is now in McCormick Co, SC. McCormick Co. was formed in 1916 from Edgefield, Abbeville, and a small portion of Greenwood Cos. Does anyone have their 1860 census record to see where they were. I can find out at our local Archives, as it has all county census records 1790 - 1930. --------------------------------------------------- Hope someone can help with some of the descrepancies with proof. Please cut and paste the individual into a new message and answer one at a time instead of crowding the list with replies of the whole family.
