Our group has been researching "Samuel Walker of Revolutionary Times in Edgefield, SC" for several years. We finally found a male descendant and his DNA is a match for a Walker family in Texas that has, among the descendants, a 1840s family with children: MARINA, MIRANDA, and STANCIL WALKER. Those of you who are familiar with the Hezekiah Walker family (born Edgefield, SC, died Brownsville MS in 1849) will note the names are the *same as* the children in 1820s family of Hezekiah Walker! What is the link?? A DNA test could prove if this is coincidence or family association. The test might also prove a link for any of the other 50 or so Walker groups found on the Walker DNA Project. So this modern technology is the most cost and time efficient way to link or eliminate Walker groups from our research and from yours, also. We will gladly sponsor the testing (simple cheek swab, no blood needed) for any MALE WALKER descendant from the line of HEZEKIAH WALKER who died 1849 in Brownsville, MS. He has to be thru the male line and, therefore, still have the name Walker. Let me know if you or someone you know would qualify to be the DNA donor and I'll give you details. Best wishes, Judy Russell Bogart, GA Walker research results at: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/u/s/Judith-F-Russell/index.html

I believe that they are living with their grandparents and aunt Clarissa Holloway.) Received the following information as I was working to sort the two Jordan Holloways in my early Holloway search for the ancestors of my proven Elijah Holloway. Letter from Jane Bird Hunter on the family of Lewellyn Holloway: "The Jordan Holloway who died in 1862 was married to Mary Reardon in 1799. They would not fit as parents to your Elijah Holloway who your records show was born about 1797. The first child of Jordan and Mary was Llewelyn born in 1801. Llewelyn's wife was Sophronia. Edgefield Co., SC Probate Court Record Box 53 Pkg 221(3 or 4?) has to do with the estate of Llewelyn G. Holloway who died intestate on or about the 21st of Oct 1844. (Levi) Garrison Holloway signed the petition concerning the estate. Guardian bonds designating Levie G. Holloway as guradian of the estates of Mary Ann, Virginia and Ann Holloway (Llewelyn's daughters) are recorded in Edgefield Co. records and Guardian accounts are on record. Microfilm # 023964 (Salt Lake City Family History Library) include Guardian Accounts 1840-1846 and 1844-1847 and these include an accounting of the estates of Mary, Ann, and Virginia Holloway (by Levi G. Holloway). The report from 1847 includes this notation under Mary's section: 'The ward died after my appointment as guardian and before 1 Jan 1847 at which time I ...the estate. I have transferred her estate to her mother's and sisters and above....which are to be...(can't read it JBH) /s/ Levi G. Holloway Feb 7, 1847. Reports were made each year, Here are other notes I made: Box JJ pg. 108 (no identifying box or pkg #s) Ann Holloway, Virginia Holloway, Mary Ann Holloway, Levi Garrison Holloway Estate of Lewillen Holloway p. 129 VS Sophronia Holloway Sophronia Holloway, widow. In the accounts made each year (1847-1849) an account was paid to Lemuel Hamilton on a/c and also another amount was paid to him for board for each girl. Edgefield Marriage Records, pp. 66 (McClendon) shows the marriage of L. Hamilton and Mrs. Sophronia Holloway on Oct 15, 1846. What happened later to the girl's mother is not known, but when the 1850 U.S. census was taken in Edgefield Co., SC Ann and Virginia are shown with Jordan and Mary Holloway. The Guardian Returns continue until 1857 when the account was settled and 'the estate of Virginian Williams in a/c with L. G. Holloway paid C. J. Williams and his wife Virginia in full....' Ann was married in 1854 and I got that information elsewhere and if you're interested I can get it for you. Clarissa was the daughter of Jordan Holloway and his wife Mary Reardon Holloway and not a doughter-in-law. I can't give you documented proof of that (except what Jordan stated in his will) but have talked with family members who know this as a fact. My sister and I visited with Gladys Timmereman in Mt. Pleasant in 1984 who was a granddaughter of Virginia Holloway Williams. Also my 2nd cousin Augustus Byrd, married another of Virginia's granddaughter. Virginia lived on that plantation with her Aunt Clarissa during the war, her husband was a casualty and later she married a Joseph Hamilton and they lived at that location also. If you've visited Gilgal Baptist Church in Edgefield Co., you find Clarissa's grave there and also Virginia's and her 2nd husband and some of her family. __________ Wills and Deeds of Edgefield Co., SC by Mrs. Carson, SCDAR collection 929.3 mentions Ann Holloway, Virginia Holloway, Mary Ann Holloway and Levi G. Holloway vs Sophonia Holloway, widow. I do not know if these are the guardian papers or if there is an equity suit. [Box JJ pg. 108 (no identifying box or pkg #s)]

You'll find the deeds in a set of seven volumes called South Carolina Deed Abstracts. The first four (1719-72) were edited by Clara A. Langley; the last three (1773-88) by Brent H. Holcomb. The location is usually identified as one of the proprietary counties; Old Edgefield included portions of Berkley, Colleton and Granville Counties. Within those large counties, a township name (New Windsor or Londonborough) will identify an Edgefield location, as will the name of the waterways. The Edgefield properties in 1762-1786 were often identified as being on the waters of Stevens, Turkey or Nobles (later Horns) Creek, or on the Little Saluda River. If you have located the land petitions for people you're seeking, you can get the location of their plats/grants through the SCDAH search-engine at www.archivesindex.sc.gov. The name of the creek is sometimes the only indication that a property is within the region of (later) Ninety-Six/Edgefield. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marleen Van Horne" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, August 27, 2004 12:31 AM Subject: [SCEDGEFIELD] Pre 1786 Land Records for Edgefield County > I am in Salt Lake City doing research at the Family History Library. > > Where do I find the deeds for the area that became Edgefield, pre 1786? > > I have found the South Carolina Royal Land Grants which go from 1731 to 1775. I am in Salt Lake City doing research at the Family History Library. Where do I find the deeds for the area that became Edgefield, pre 1786? I have found the South Carolina Royal Land Grants which go from 1731 to 1775. I have also explored the Petitions for Land from South Carolina Council Journals 1734-1775 and there are also the Charleston City, Charleston County and Soutch Carolina miscellaneous land record, 1719-1893. This last item has a few "Edgefield" deeds. Between 1786 and 1840, my Edgefield ancestors wrote 136 deeds. I find it hard to believe this was a sport that only began in 1786, since by that date some of my ancestors had been living there for almost 40 years. I looked for Ninety-Six District records and was referred to Abbeville, but there were few deeds listed there, so basically, my question is where did people record land transactions before 1786. Time is running out on my stay, and the people at the library are no help, they are just as much in the dark as I am. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Marleen Van Horne

Billie, Are you aware of any female RAMSEY who married a WALKER in either Spartanburg or Edgefield? I show a Ramsey WALKER who is listed in the 1850 Edgefield census with Lucy, Prudence and Sarah WALLS, daughters of John and Amy Hall WALLS. Ramsey WALKER was born 1803. I do not know if this Ramsey WALKER has any relationship to the WALLS family at all other than perhaps as a hired hand, but there is the possibility since in later generations there was Sallie Wall RAMSEY (1861-1937), wife of Willam Purdy RAMSEY (1843-1905) both buried at new Prospect Baptist Church in Spartanburg. I am trying to establish a link between the WALLS, WALKER's and RAMSEY's. Thanks, Keith

I am interested in any information and family connections of this Dennis Carpenter who witnessed the second deed in the query on Charles Powell (below) c. 1809. I am researching the descendents of Adam Carpenter b.c. 1771 in Cumberland/Moore County, North Carolina, migrated to Edgefield District, South Carolina, c. 1803-4 and died c. 1852-3 with a will in Edgefield District, South Carolina. The 333 acres of Carpenter land was located south of Trenton/Pine Log House and off the Bettis Academy Road. There is suppose to be an old cemetery on this property. There was also a Reuben Carpenter in early Edgefield who married a Butler and was prominent in the settlement of at least one or more Butler estates in Edgefield. At least two of his sons migrated over into early Lincoln County, Georgia. I think the Dennis Carpenter a witenss to the 1809 deed eventually migrated over to Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, and then to Alabama. I first began researching these Carpenters in 1967. I have not worked on them much recently since the Internet explosion. Owen Carpenter Rev. Sol and Catrin _?_ (perhaps a misspelling of Catherine/Catrina or similar name)were probably the parents of this Adam Carpenter. I have often wondered if perhaps Dennis and Reuben Carpenter might have been his brothers and that is why he came to Edgefield. NO PROOF!!! Just speculation!!! Adam Carpenter had sons: John, William, Isham, and Dennis. Adam's son, Dennis, was probably not old enough to witness a deed in 1809 even by Barnwell standards of about 12-14 years old. My other families connections in the Trenton area are offshoots of my Carpenter line: Whitlock, Randal/l, Booth, Hatcher, Swearingen, and perhaps Christian. Adam married Milly/Matilda _?_ who may have been a Sheffield c. 1796-1800 in Cumberland/Moore County, North Carolina. Just to see if anybody is actually reading this... There actually is a real live person named H. C. Ouzts who lives just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. I made an appointment with him and met him at the Mormon Family History library last October on my first visit to there. We are apparently cousins to some of the same surnames lines, but not cousins to each other.
