    1. Benjamin Roper
    2. Gerald Boyd
    3. Thank you for the Roper information. I only have two in my research, both Benjamin. Benjamin Roper married Mary Holmes (born about 1819 died June 15, 1832). She was the daughter of Edward Holmes and Elizabeth Burress. Benjamin Roper married Emily E. Cogburn (born April 19, 1812, died October 7, 1852) After the death (?) of Benjamin Roper she married John Harwood Burt. He was the son of Harwood Burt and Susanna Miles. I do not have dates for either Benjamin Roper. Could they be the same person?. John Harwood Burt was previously married to 1. Eliza A. Butler (1792-1840) and then Emily E. (Cogburn) Roper. I don't know the parents of these two women. Would appreciate any information on any of these names. Thank you.

    1. Riddle / Youngblood Researchers needed
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. OK, those of you who work on the Riddles... I have found an interesting bit of data in a Probate record that leads me to believe that the wife of Lewis Youngblood of the following family was probably Mary RIDDLE. Looking for confirmation or proof that my conclusions are in error. This family was in the Old Edgefield Dist, but some of the Riddle connections also go into Newberry as well. [Then there is a VA. line with many of the same names.] Here is what I have on Lewis Youngblood: Descendants of Lewis Youngblood (parents unknown) [I don't believe him to be the Lewis son of Peter and Susannah Starke Youngblood.] Generation No. 1 1. LEWIS1 YOUNGBLOOD(1) died Bet. February - March 1822 in Edgefield Co, SC. He married MARY(1). She died Abt. 1836. This week I have a few hours between appointment and looked thru part of a film that is in a list for me to check out (if I should live so long to get to all of them) Found this one, that leads me to believe that it is very possible that the wife Mary named in the above Probate info, was formerly Mary RIDDLE, daughter of Thomas & Catherine Riddle. Estate of Thomas Riddle [Edgefield Co. Probate Box 44- Pkg1843, April 17, 1812 Catherine Riddle wife Adm. William Blackburn Lots of Riddles named. Relationship give only for daughter Eleanor Riddle. Riddles listed in purchase or receiving small payments: Catherine, Jesse, James, John J. Others listed in the accounting of payments: Lewis Youngblood in full same (he received the same amoung as did James, who seems to have possible have been a son. James Riddle recd in full. Eleanor Riddle in full Charles Walls in full, and same as Charles Oliver, however their amount was only $15 vs the ca 30 received by others. Would two daughters get less and these their two husbands, or two granddaughters married and each receiving 1/2 of their parents' portion. A William Riddle bought a table, but in another place Catherine calls him a friend who she does NOT want to administer her husband's estate in her stead. It just caught me eye with the Lewis Youngblood, and the Riddles of Edgefield co. have some connection, altho I don't know how, to my Coursey line. It is possible it was only a working relationship, as one was an overseer for One of the Riddles, whose name escapes me right now. And the Riddle/Powell/Sheppard familes connect and contain one Lewis Coursey who I believe was the brother of Capt. James Coursey, John and William Coursey or the early Rev. Days in SC. Hope this helps someone, and if anyone has further info, I am curious to know if I am on the right track in the way I interpreted the info. Billie Jones Camden, SC [email protected]

    1. Phebe Partin b. 1807 m. James P. Salter
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. Dear Dean & other Partin researchers: I have this in my notes: Query was sent to the <[email protected]> list by Dean OWEN <[email protected]> about Phobie (Duckie) PARTIN ( born @1807 in Edgefield, SC and died 1869 in Conecuh Co, AL.) who married William (P?) SALTER (born @1800 in Georgia and died 1856 in Conecuh Co, Al.). I sent him the info. I had on Charles Partin and his children, which I now believe contains an error, so I need to send the question and probable error that seems to be in the info. based on a closer look at the info. FACT: Edgefield Co. Probate, Will of Charles Parten, /w/ 6 Sept 1796, /r/ in Will Book 'A, page 306-307, July 20, 1812 [Box 43, pkg 1819], Proven by Sam'l Satcher 5th June, 1812 Recorded July 29, 1813 states that Charles Partin had a daughter Phoebe. Other info. stated that Phoebe married William Partin Salter. Upon studying the info., I don't think this Phoebe who married William P. Salter can possibly be the daughter of Charles Partin and Ann [possible Baggett]. Reasons: 1. The Phoebe listed as a daughter of Charles would be the sister of Nancy Partin Salter, mother of William Partin Salter. That would mean that William married his aunt! 2. Phoebe who married William P. Salter was born in 1807, and the age difference between Phoebe and the youngest child I have for Charles and Ann would be 22 years. Not an impossibility, as I am 24 years older than my brother, but Charles would have been near the age of 75. Also not impossible, as Strom Thurmond proved. However, if Ann is even close to his same age, this does not sound possible at all. Upon sharing the problem with another Partin researcher. Faye Urbantke, she stated: "I had just received some information on Phoebe "Duckie" Partin that married William Partin Salter. It states that Phoebe "Duckie" Partin was the daughter of William and Sarah C. Partin, that would make them first cousins. Who knows, I can't pin it down that Charles Jones Partin was their son. The information that I received said children of Wiliam Partin and wife Sarah C. are, Kindred Allison, Phoebe "Duckie", Charles Jones Bud C, and Enoch." [ Faye, is there suppose to be a comma between Charles Jones and Bud C. in the list of children above?] Will of Charles Parten, /w/ 6 Sept 1796, /r/ in Will Book 'A, page 306-307, July 20, 1812 [Box 43, pkg 1819], Proven by Sam'l Satcher 5th June, 1812 Recorded July 29, 1813. I give to my oldest son William Partin 440 acres of land lying on Rocky Creek in the County Aforesaid. This William is the probable father of Phoebe Duckie Partin m. William Partin Salter. The child Phoebe, possible daughter of William and Sarah C. Partin, then would be a 1st cousin to William Partin Salter, and we find that happened quite often in the rural south. And William possibly named his daugher after his sister Phoebe Partin, daughter of Chalres named in the will. Comments and proofs welcome. Billie Jones Camden, SC [email protected]

    1. WIDNER/TOOLE/GREEN/CUMBAA
    2. Vivian Toole
    3. Look in the Upper Three Runs area of what was originally Barnwell District/County, South Carolina, for Widners. There will probably a variety of spellings. Barnwell was created from Winton c. 1800 and before Winton it was Orangeburg. Barnwell has a full set of records. No fires that I recall hearing about. This part of the county was taken over by the Atomoic Energy Commission in the 1950's. I have a double Toole line from that area. The Tooles and Widners were neighbors. So far as I know, I do not have a direct Widner line. Though there was a lot of intermarrying among these people who stayed for many generations. My double 2-great grandfather, Manning (Richard I. Manning) Toole b. 1826 bought land from one of the Widners. This deed "threw" me for years until I resigned myself to the fact that he was only about 12-13 years old when the deed was made. These people also witnessed deeds, etc. when they were about 14 years old. So keep that fact in mind when researching in that area and trying to make eeucated guesses on time periords for further research when the dates at first do not seem to match. Mary D. Green who married Manning Toole in late 1850 or early 1851 was born 1828. She and an Albert Green, whom I presume for research purposes, was her brother witnessed another deed in Barnwell District c. 1838 when their step-father, Jordon Madison Cumbaa (various spelling)sold some land that he had inherited. Cumbaa was a school teacher and postmaster and census taker and magistrate in Barnwell District. He was about 10 years younger than the widow, Sarah _?_Green. Still looking for her maiden name and the given name and location of Mr. Green b. c. 1800 d.c. 1832-37 (educated guess on the dates). This Green-Cumbaa family lived in Montmorenci area in 1850 and 1860. Cumbaas were in the Dean's Swamp Bridge and Church area. Jordan Madison Cumbaa and Sarah _?_ Green Cumbaa are buried in the Magnolia Cemetery inAugusta, Georgia. Hope this information helps some else. I have been stuck on this Green/e line for 37 years. I thought at one time that the A.M. Green and P. C. Green on the 1860 census of Edgefield District, South Carolina, might have been her brothers, but now I am not so sure. Some of their families seem to have migrated to Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia. (New connections, (for me anyway,) between ELLZEY family of Evan ELLZEY and Mary COLLINS? and the POWELL family out of 1700s Duplin Co., NC and Edgefield Co., SC into Twiggs Co., Early Co., and Crawford Co., Georgia that married into the ELLZEY family as well as possibilities of connecting with my POWELL line out of Virginia and Georgia that married into my GRESHAM/GRISHAM family that married my HATTEN/HATTON that married JONES that descends from McCARTY out of Edgefield Co., SC. (The POWELL information that is new to me that connects with the ELLZEY family is shown further below in this email and was originally from Sam POWELL and posted by GenWeb Archives.) Hiram POWELL, b: 1797 in Edgefield Co., SC, md: # 1: Pennia BARNES & # 2: Rebecca CHEAVES/CHEVIS. (Rev.) Hiram POWELL & 1st wife, Pennia BARNES, were the parents of Rigdon POWELL, born: 1806 in Georgia, md: Nancy ROBERTS, (parents: ??,) and their son, James Madison POWELL, born: Abt. 1829 in Crawford Co., GA, md: Cynthia ELLZEY, d/o Evan ELLZEY and Mary COLLINS?, also parents of Harriet(t) ELLZEY who married John LEWIS, son of Nancy COPELAND and Howell LEWIS, with my descent being from Harriet(t) ELLZEY and John LEWIS. (There was more than one branch of this POWELL family in Ellisville, Jones County, Mississippi where my ELLZEY family was with both families coming out of South Carolina....the POWELLs were in Edgefield Dist./Co., SC.) Hello. My name is Bellinda MYRICK-BARNETT and I wanted to write regarding the new connections that I have found for the ELLZEY family with the POWELL family and others connecting here. While re-reading a letter from Carol ELSEY back on May 10, 2001, I noticed that Evan ELLZEY and Mary COLLINS?' daughter, Cynthia ELLZEY, had married James Madison POWELL, son of Rigdon POWELL and Nancy ROBERTS of Crawford County, Georgia, and that Rigdon POWELL's brother, Hiram POWELL, was born in Edgefield Dist./Co., SC so the names of MADISON, for the middle name of James Madison POWELL and the given name of Hiram for Hiram POWELL along with the surname of POWELL triggered possible connections in my mind. My paternal lineage is from the ELLZEY family in Jones Co., MS that married into my LEWIS-COPELAND-PARKER-JENNINGS-EARLE-HOLBROOK family group that married into my paternal MYRICK-PIERCE-HUNTER?/BOWLES?-HERRINGTON-GRANTHAM-STUCKEY-DICKENS family group that married into my HATTEN/HATTON-LOTT-LIGHTFOOT family group on several occasions including when my father, Billy Earl(e) "Bill" MYRICK, married my mother, Ethel LaVerne "LaVerne" SLAUGHTER, who was the daughgter of Louis Hector "Heck" SLAUGHTER and Mrs. Ethel Rosalie HATTEN WOMACK, (widow of Joseph Marion WOMACK,) who was the daughter of Cicero Lamkin HATTEN and Rodella "Della" JONES, d/o William Tunley JONES, (CSA,) and Martha Ann Caroline "Caroline" McCARTY. Martha Ann Caroline "Caroline" McCARTY was the daughter of Nancy SPRADLEY and Hiram McCARTY, born: July 23, 1811 in Edgefield District, SC, died: 1886 in Jasper Co., Mississippi, who was the son of Sarah WALKER and Alford/Alfred McCARTY of Edgefield District, SC. In addition, Cicero Lamkin HATTEN was the stepson of Zachariah Taylor "Zachary/Zack" FAITH, 2nd husband of Cicero's mother, Frances Ann GRISHAM, whose 1st husband was Lawrence M. HATTEN, (s/o William HATTEN, (1st coroner of Winn Parish, LA who later married 2nd wife, Anna "Annie" NETTLES,) and William's 1st wife, Frances Lucretia "Patsy" LOTT.) Frances Ann GRISHAM was the daughter of Elizabeth Ann FORD, (d/o Mary BUCKLES/BUCKHOLTS and Henry FORD of Natchez, Adams Co., MS and Franklin Co., MS,) and Jehu Madison GRISHAM/GRESHAM, born: 1815 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, died: 1861 in Jackson Parish, Louisiana. Just recently, I found out that Jehu Madison GRISHAM/GRESHAM was the son of Barnett GRESHAM, born: Abt. 1797 in King & Queen Co., Virginia, died: Abt. 1830 in Lowndes Co., Alabama, who married Lucy POWELL, born: Abt. 1790 in Virginia, died: Abt. 1818 prob. in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia, md: December 18, 1806 in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia. Lucy POWELL was the daughter of Mary HARDAWAY and Edward POWELL, Jr., born: August 03, 1755 in Virginia, prob. Albermarle Parish in Sussex County. There may not be any direct connection with this POWELL family but it is interesting that the given name of MADISON is present in this POWELL-GRESHAM/GRISHAM family group as well as the POWELL-ELLZEY family group as well as the connecting McCARTY family of Edgefield, SC and the given name of HIRAM along with the given name of HIRAM showing up in the POWELL family out of Edgefield, SC.....and looking to put together more of the pieces....somethings are more obscure but there other less obscure possibilities here. My ELLZEY descent is immediately below followed immediately by the information on the families of POWELL, John Hathorn, (Rev.) Hiram, and Rigdon, James Madison, etc.. Thank you. Sincerely, Bellinda Myrick-Barnett My ELLZEY descent is from: Evan ELLZEY & Mary COLLINS?, (as mentioned above) Harriet(t) ELLZEY & John LEWIS, (s/o Nancy COPELAND and Howell LEWIS, of Granville Co., NC) Rachael Moranda "Randa/Randy" LEWIS & 2nd?/3rd? husb: Spencer B. PARKER, (s/o Jeremiah "Jerry" PARKER & 2nd?/3rd? wife, Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS,) (Rachael Moranda "Randa/Randy" LEWIS said to have married under name of Moranda COLEMAN, (why?,) when she married two known husbands, John Wesley BRIGHT, and Spencer B. PARKER,) (And in earlier info Moranda's mother's name was shown in my immediate family as Karrie KNIGHT, (why?,) was this confusion with her mother, Harriet ELLZEY's 1st name of Harriet(t) with Karrie? and was the KNIGHT a confusion with BRIGHT, the name of the 1st?/2nd? husband of Rachael Moranda? or possibly something to do with the KNIGHT relations?) Allie Artimissa PARKER & James Martin "Jim" MYRICK, (s/o Harriet Katherine "Hattie" HERRINGTON & Calvin Pierce "Callie" MYRICK) Billy Earl(e) "Bill" MYRICK & Ethel LaVerne "LaVerne" MYRICK, (d/o Ethel Rosalie HATTEN, (Mrs. Joseph Marion WOMACK, Sr.,) & 2nd husb: Louis Hector "Heck" SLAUGHTER, (1st wife: Mrs. Callie Martha MUNN ADAMS, (widow of Sam A.?/V.? ADAMS,) (2nd wife: Mary LEE) Bellinda MYRICK ----------------------------------- Again, I am just passing this on. I don't know a lot about the Powells and nothing about the other surnames in Bellinda's message. Billie Jones

    3. Audrey, I think I can tie the Sugar Jones Mathews line into my Carter line. See below your post on Sugar Jones info. I have then added my information below that. I have seen no documentation, thus no PROOF that names Willa Mathews Carter as the daughter of Sugar, but your info. infers a connection which might be this one. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Audrey Pool" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, September 20, 2004 8:05 PM Subject: Re: Sugar Jones MATTHEWS estate rec. > MATHEWS, Sugar I. And we know that at least 4 of Charles Carters children, per my memory, maybe 5, left Edgefield for Coweta Co, GA. One question that comes to mind that might be a negative is that the husband of Willa Mathew's Carter is NOT a Junior, as his father was Charles Carter, unless he was named Jr. to distinguish him from an older John Carter of the area. I have found that done in church records, even with women. Again, we find attachments of groups of folks from Southside VA to Edgefield and on to other areas. 1. Some Kemp info. in Barnwell and Bamburg Counties.

    3. I am not a member of any list that serves the above areas, other than the Aiken list. I am interested in information on these Kemps that I have checked out for someone else. If anyone can provide info, I would really appreciate it. I have no Bamburg or Barnwell Cem. books, altho I did find several Books on the area published by a DAR chapter in the SCDAR library. 3. According to the cemetery records that I have, Eliza Dean Neal is buried in the Lott cem., but HC Ouzts calls the cem. where James Neal is buried the Neal-Mobley Cem, Saluda. He is the one who identifies Amanda Malvina Neal as a daughter of James Neal. I don't have her records any where else and have never worked on the Neal family with Probate or deed records. March 1929 The use of died before March 19, 1929 comes from the fact that they are NOT mentioned in probate records of Margaret Dean Holloway, sister of Bryant Dean, father of Eliza in her AL probate records. More on that later. The naming pattern of the family certainly points to the Bryant Dean and Trecy Hill families as follows: According to my research of census records, Bryant and Treacy Hill Dean has two unknown children, a son and a daughter, listed in the 1830 Edgefield co census: p. 214 with parents and the 1840 Edgefield Co. SC Census, born between 1815 - 1820. In researching the Lott families, I came upon death cert. that listed James Neal and Eliza Dean as parents to a spouse of a LOTT. The date of birth for the Eliza Dean listed with James Neal in the census records puts her date of birth in that range. We MAY have found the missing daughter. Death certificates of some of their children specifically call their mother Eliza Dean and their father James Neal. Of course, as true researchers, this is not yet proof! But notice the names of the following partial list of James & Eliza Dean Neal's children: ..... 2 William NEAL b: Abt. 1845 [Bryant's father was William] ..... 2 Treacy NEAL b: Abt. 1848 [Bryant's wife was Treacy] ..... 2 James NEAL b: Abt. 1852 [Treacy Hill Dean had brother James] ..... 2 Lod NEAL b: Abt. 1854 [Bryant's father-in-law was Lodowick Hill m. Those records contain the following named Eliza Neal as a legatee: "Eliza Neal, over 21 years old, resides in SC, P.O. Fruit Hill, Edgefield Co, SC....... the above named (is a living child) of Bryant Dean who was a brother of the testatrix." She is listed as the mother of Virginia Neal Lott in her death Certificate, 1920 Edgefield Co, SC # 9437. 3. When people made an initial land petition on the same day, and requested adjoining properties, they were sometimes members of inter-connected families from the same location. That does not apply to this group, because there were earlier petitions and grants for the individuals and their families, and they did not live near one another. The majority of the Moseleys in Edgefield in the 1770's were VA-born, but some had apparently lived in NC in the 1760's. The Glover family of MA began acquiring substantial properties in the SC Low Country (St. Bartholomew's Parish) by the 1720's. I don't know if they were related to the Glovers who lived in the Disputed Territories on the NC/SC border (the group connected to the Edgefield Glovers). Moses Yarborough owned land in various locations in SC--the Berkley County property was on the Little River in Newberry/Laurens. His 1772 will said that he was "late of St. Mark's Parish, Craven County" (Sumter Co SC). His second wife was VA-born. One can find Yarboroughs and Harlens in NC in the 1750's-60's, and in Union Co SC in the 1780's-90's, also some Harlens in VA in the 1760's and some who arrived in SC from Germany in 1752. The Edgefield region was so sparsely-populated from 1760-76 that probably everybody knew--or knew of--everybody else, especially from common militia service. While this group of Edgefield men "could" have known one another from a previous neighborhood, their submitting additional land petitions during a single Council session does not imply that their families were connected. They did not settle near one another, and do not appear to have signed legal documents in common. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Drew Welch" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 12, 2004 2:07 PM Subject: Samuel Glover, Ezekial Harling, Rbt.
