I am not working on this one but got to send to someone who posted request for info. on these families. Others: Lewis Youngblood in full given the same amt. that James Riddle and Eleanor Riddle recd in full. This may indicate two children and a son-in-law. Charles Walls in full, same as Charles Oliver, , but $15 vs the ca $30 received by others may indicate they were sons or sons in law of a deceased child. A William Riddle bought a table, but in another place Catherine calls him a friend who she does not want to administer her husband's estate in her stead. While cleaning up my desktop, I found a file where I had typed a bunch of probate records, some transcribed, some extracted, some just a few notes on them, probably almost two years ago and I have no idea if I have posted them to the site or not. So I am doing so. Please forgive the cross posting, but Old Edgefield Dist covered quite an area. Solomon Popes estate contained 13 Negroes There seems to be an accounting for many years of payments that seem to be for the maintenance of land, farm and support of the faimily. In 1813, the following petition is filed: To John Simkins, Ordinary, .. the undersigned being members of the estate of Solomon Pope decese by leave to state that by the will of Solomohn Pope all the negroes and stock . to be equally divided - that young children are now of age and __ has been made for the division - That the household and kitchen furniture, and plantation Tools __ other small articles of a perishable nature were no disposed of by the will but have been kept __ till the present time to wait the coming of age of the youngest child. .. the partitoners therefore prays that your Honor. will grant him an order of Sale for the protion of the __ property of said estate above _________ . 3 Nov, 1813 John Pope, Exer. COMMENTS: Note the listing of the children. I could not tell if there were commas in between some of the names, and there was a place on the microfilm that was black and I could not tell what names might be there. From a DAR records at the Camden Archives children of Solomon Pope and his wife Susannah Dawkins were given. [Problem - wife was not named in his will, but the info. I have from the DAR records has her death date AFTER his??? Names of most of the children are now connected thru the will, but there were some names in a blacked out area that I could not read. Therefore, I have not yet verified Henry or Patience as children of Solomon. The Original will in Edgefield may be readable, but the microfilm was not. I have tenatively created this family grouping. Any proof of this is welcome, as is proof of error. Holloway identified himself as the son of Sarah E. Holloway and filed for the adm. of her estate. Bond of $10,000 was posted by Lewis E. Holloway, Mathew Mathews and H.H. Probate Record of Mary Perry: Box 74, Pkg 2997 Executor: E.W. Perry Extracted from microfilm at SC State Archives: "After (expenses), I wish my Estate both real and personal to be disposed of as follows: to my daughter Martha Rutland and (heirs/hers) (Ans) one negro girl named Heater (sic) and increase. Also one bed and furniture. To my daughter Sarah Corley and (hers) (Ans) one Negro girl named (Muggy) amd increase, also one bed and furniture. The residue and remainder of my estate both real and personal I devise and bequeah to my son Ezekiah Watson Perry to have and to hold the same during his natural life and after his death to be equally divided among his children, grandchildren if there be such to take collectively what their parents would have taken if he or she had been alive at the time. (If there be no children, the remaining to be divided by the laws of division.) Appoint Ezekial Watson Perry my sole executor. 20th day of Feb., 1857. Mary (X) Perry An attached affadavit discussed her health, right mind, that she was operating the farm herself with the help of her Negroes, even being seen in the fields. She was of sound mind, and had the reputation of being a "first rate midwife". Son is referred to as Capt. Perry. One witness described her as a very old lady, who did not know her exact age, but thought herself to be between 80 and 90. She was very hard of hearing and one had to speak above a normal voice for her to understand. She had several other children beside E. W. Perry, 4 he thinks, but he does not know the circumstances in comparision with Mr. Watson Perry. He does not know who wrote the will, and Mr. Watson Perry was in the room with they arrived to witness the will. Mr. Perry gave him the will, and he read it in a normal voice, so does not think that Mrs.Perry could hear it. A later witness mentioned that Mrs. Watson had been offended by Watson's last marriage. That a son-in-law, or sons-in-laws had come and taken everything they could when her husband died, and Watson Perry had not gotten much. (my comment - maybe Watson Perry was living away at that time? There is mention of her being upset that he left the area. There was no mention of the name of her husband or the sons in law or Ezekial Watson Perry's wives. Points that were made by various witnesses: Described daughter Mrs. Corley as being poor with very little property Described Mrs. Rutland as having left 8 children surviving, which seems to indicate that she was deceased. W. Perry has some 5 or 6 children - he received 2 slave from his father. Mrs. Perry told him that Watson had received very little when his father died. Mrs. Tillman Watson and Mrs. E. Watson sworn.. Knew her for many years, and thought she was capable of making decisions altho she was growing more physically feeble. They stated that she had said that she had promised two slaves to her daughters, and altho. her daughter Mrs. Rutland was deceased, she would keep her word. Mrs. Perry stated that she had worked hard for her property and would dispense of it as she saw fit. RE: Watson Perry's marriage - she was not so much concerned about he marriages themselves, but the fact that he had moved away, and she didn't understand that as she could give him more than he could earn on his own. Billie's comment - I ran out of steam - there are 58 pages of the petition, scanned thru about 25. At the end I found that the petition that brought about all the testimony was brought by "the children of Martha Rutland, the children of Rebecca West, and the children of Matilda Mathews, grandchild of the said Mary Perry to "prove in due form of laws" the will of Mary Perry. So there may be more in equity records. I cannot identify Rebecca West - have placed her as a possible daughter, since the mention of grandchild is not plural and assume it refers only to Matilda Mathews. Also there is a reference where one witness believed there were 4 children, and I only had 3 w/o Rebecca. Can anyone help identify this Rebecca? I found NO Rebecca West in the 1850 Edgefield Co. census. I have put some of the family together from: 1. This will, 2. Bound by lines running E by Gray's land, NE by Robert Christie/Christin(?). NW by John Kay and John Moseley. S by John Bevins....." Signed 2 March 1801. According to an 1829 mortgage of Richard Turner, who owned some neighboring property, Panter/Panther branch is a branch of Big Creek. It is property at the fork of Panter/Panther Branch and Big Creek that Nathan's son, Thomas Trotter, sold land he had inheirited from his father in 1826. I've seen the Morris Gwin name but have no info. in my files. I don't research the Turner's yet. I have two John Gorman's - father and son. FAther d. 1803, son born 1770 so could be either one. I have that the some moved to Warren Co. GA., but don't know when. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- "Inventory of the estate John NEWTON, deceased, sold 10-1-1799 by William JOHNSON "Crier". Purchasers included: John SADLER, Lewis MATTHEWS, John HOLOWAY, John GWIN, Joseph CASON, James RAMSY, William GREEN, Lutson STROUD, Neomy NEWTON and John POOL. Total received $135.24 ½." John POOL'S 3rd great-grandson, John A. POOL married Tennessee STROUD in Smith Co, TX. This is my husband's direct line ancestors. (Audrey) COMMENTS BY BILLIE JONES: The names seem to put these folks in the same area. I have one Lewis Matthews as given below. The source of some of this info. is "The Compendium of American Genealogy, Vol ll, p. 95-96.'. This book is no longer accepted by DAR due to many errors found in it. I also used DAR records, DAR # 282722 Mrs. Julia King Medlock, Augusta, Ga. (Old Ninety Six Chapter)., but don't know what her source was for Lewis. We received many helpful replied to our query on Genealogy Resources in Edgefield. Thanks to all who replied. I thought the replies were being posted on the list, but I have come to believe this may not have been so, as I received a couple of requests to share the info. The purpose of this message is to share info. I did not solicit permission to post the names and email address of the folks who replied to me, so I will not post the complete reply. Instead, I will extract the most pertinent information and share it with the list. So here goes Edgefield was broken down into 5 different counties. First thing to do is find out what county has the records you are looking for. I found this out the hard way. After I got home. my favorite places to do Edgefield research are the Tompkins Library, the Probate Archives in Edgefield and the SC State Archives in Columbia. If you are interested in the part of old Edgefield Dist. that is now Saluda County, then you may want to check out the Historical Society in Saluda. by all means visit the Saluda County Historical Society - in Downtown Saluda. They are not large - but they have a fairly good selection of Family histories. Start at the Tompkins Library. They have one of the best collections on the family histories of Edgefield and much more than even the State Archives! the real treasures are located in the Probate Office just left of the City Hall. Out side of the vault is only one new microfiche reader and printer. This means if you are lucky you get access to it. If you can take a digital camera with you then you can get access in the vault. the Public Library in Saluda has a section out back of microfilmed old newspapers well worthy of checking. The Tompkins Library is the repository of the holdings of the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society (OEDGS) 604 members strong nationwide. The Public Library does not contain any genealogical information. Oakley Park is exactly what it says, a museum, that is open on Thursday, Friday and Sat. At OEDGS you will find microfilm of deeds, equity records, probate records, census records, newspapers of the area from early 1839 forward, over 1200 surname files, over 5,000 books of history, family histories, books of information on counties in SC and Confederate and Revolutionary War information of Edgefield. If you call Tonya (our Director) at 803-637-4010, or email her at [email protected] she can let you know what is available for the surnames you are interested in. The best place to stay in Edgefield is the Edgefield Inn. (if you don't have family to stay with). Let them know you will be at the Tompkins library and they give a discount. They have a website so you can see what they have. It is only about a mile and a half from the library which is on the square. Then I received two differing opinions about the utility of the State Archives, as follows: The best place to get information is at the SC State Archives in Columbia. All of the old county records have been moved there. Some of the Archives information are available online. Use SC State Archives Browser as Keyword. After spending a defeated day at the Columbia Archives, I welcomed the information that I got from the small antiquated libraries. Be sure you allow enough time to spend reading and searching for your ancestors. I can say that most of the County Courthouses in S. Carolina have sent their early records to the Archives in Columbia, but the libraries have all sorts of stuff. Thanks again to all who replied. Pat & Dick Folkerth Dallas, Texas

I have received notification that my FTM 9 will no longer be supported. Of course I have never asked for support with it, but wonder: Does anyone have version 2005 and if so, what system does it take to support it, how much memory, and how do you like it vs. other versions. Thanks to all who replied to our earlier message. In particular, thanks for the advice about Saluda and about understanding our real area of interest before we go. Greetings, list. My wife and I are headed to Edgefield in a couple of weeks and we would like some advice about the best places to do genealogy. There seem to be several candidates; the Tompkins Library, the Edgefield County Public Library and the Edgefield County Historical Society. Then there is the Edgefield Oakley Park Museum and the ABBE Regional Library System, with an address in Aiken, and the Genealogical Society with a PO box. And, of course, the Courthouse. We found addresses and phone numbers for all these places on the Rootsweb sites. But the contact info alone does not help us plan our trip. Can someone suggest the best places to go to find data of different types ?? We are looking for all kinds of data; family files, birth, death, marriage, wills, obits, military records, land records, plat maps, etc. Thanks in advance, Pat & Dick Folkerth Dallas, Texas

Hi. I know I have been out of the loop for awhile. But these names: Charles Wall, and Gibson: They are names in my family. My Great Aunt Mona Mae Collins was married (first)to a Charles Wall in the 1920's. I have some old photos of the two of them.
