    1. ALLEN IN MECHLENBURG COUNTY, VA C. 1760'S & 170O'S
    2. Vivian Toole
    3. I am replying to the following query about ALLEN families in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, in the 1760-70's era that appeared on the Edgefield District/County, South Carolina, list. I am cross posting to several Georgia lists as well. My Phillip Allin (Philip Allen) S31514 received a pension under the Pension Act of 1832 as a Rev. War Soldier as a resident of Clarke County, Georgia. Information in his pension claims that he was about 72 years old (b.c. 1760). Was born in King and Queen County, Virginia. First elisted in 1776 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. He was serving in South Carolina in 1781 under General Greene and others. He apparently died in Clarke County, Georgia, c. 1838-40. I am not sure when he moved over into Georgia. He was probably in Wilkes or Oglethorpe or Greene County, Georgia, prior to showing up on the Clarke County, Georgia, taxlists on Robinson Creek in the section of Clarke County, Georgia, that became Oconee County, Georgia, as early as 1810. His post office was Watkinsville where Parmenas (sp?) Haynes was postmaster. Haynes and a Jeremiah Daniel were his character witnesses on his pension application. Haynes had previously appeared in Greene County, Georgia, land records around Woodville and Temperance Bell Crossroads (Jeremiah Lindsey's 200 acres of land). In 1819 Clarke County, Georgia, he married Sarah Robinson b. c. 1790 d. between 1870-80 Clarke County, Georgia. This was more than likely not his first marriage. Was Robinson her maiden name or from a previous marriage? They had several children gleaned from the census. He owned land, but appears to have either lost it or sold it by c. 1832. Their daughter, Mary Frances Ann Allen, m. James Crow in Clarke County, Georgia, in 1846. These were one set of my 2-great grandparents. Any early Robinson information would be appreciated. Any connections to the Allens of Mecklenbury in the query below? Anyone researching my Philip Allen? I have a Robert Christie who, in October of 1796, witnessed the will of Josiah Allen in Colleton County, along with Aaron Etheredge. 1. FRANKLIN/TOOLE IN EDGEFIELD/BARNWELL/AIKEN CO., SC
    2. Vivian Toole
    3. Dear List Members, I am replyng to the FRANKLIN/MARTIN query copied below that was posted to the Edgefield County, SC, list. I am cross posting my reply to the Aiken and Barnwell lists. I am interested in proving or disproving any early FRANKLIN/TOOLE connections in this area. I have a double TOOLE line out of Barnwell District/County, South Carolina. I have a genealogy file with just these Toole lines in it along with other connections in the area. There is a written down story that I got through the Toole Lawyers in Aiken that Isaac Toole married a sister of Benjamin Franklin. I have never been able to determine the original source of this complete story other parts of which do not match the facts found through genealogical research. It also claims that another Isaac Toole married a Cherokee Indian. Have not been able to prove or disprove that either. If he did it was more likely Tiscorouah (spelling??) from North Carolina. I and other Toole researchers have only found proof of one Isaac Toole in the Orangeburg-Winton-Barnwell Area c. 1778 from Bertie Precinct/Chowan area of North Carolina. When Isaac died in Barnwell c. 1812-14 without a will, his apparent widow was Keziah [_?_]. I am presuming that she was the mother of most or all of his children because the name of Keziah (with various spellings and misspellings) has come down in the various branches of the family. The times, names, and places are all wrong for a connection to the BENJAMIN FRANKLIN of Pennsylvania and the Revolutionary War era activities. The only proven connection, if it is, is that Benjamin Toole, son of Isaac and presumed Keziah [_?_], and Susan [_?_] named their oldest know son, Giles Franklin (G.F.) Toole. Other passed down information claims that Susan was a Heath. No proof of that either. There was a Giles Frankin I found mentioned in early Edgefield District/County records, I think an early deed as I am writing this from memory. A Bible record states that Benjamin Toole died October 18, 1841 in the 64th year of his age making him born c. 1777-78. Benjamin's tombstone apparently gives him the middle name of Franklin and other info may give him a middle initial of F. I suspect that the stone was put up at a somewhat later date than his death. Most Barnwell markers do not date back that far. My Toole line comes from Stephen Toole b. c. 1780 d. 1863 Barnwell District, South Carolina. Was there a blood connection between the Tooles of Barnwell and the Franklins of Edgefield/Barnwell??? Or were they just neighbors. All of their info is indexed; one types in a word on a computer, and all records with notes containing that name are listed and where they're to be found at the library. The library staff were excellent. This is their website to access at home: www.archivesindex.sc.gov This site was down for awhile, but it was up the last time I used it. June

    1. ROPER wills
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. I found these two records at the SC State Arcives and believe it to be the probate record of Wiley Roper based on his beloved companion Margarite, who very may be Peggy. However, altho they contain the same witnesses, and possibly the same wife, I am not sure if these two packages refer to the same Roper or not. Estate of William Roper, decd; Benjamin and Sam Roper Exo. Edgefield Co, SC Box 044 Pkg 1856 Recorded July 26, 1811. SC, Edgefield Dist: Know all men by their presents that we Benjamin Roper, Samuel Roper & Jacob Earnest was at the house of William Roper on the 21st July 1810 and heard him declare these words to be his last will and desire (that is to say) I give unto my Beloved companion, Margarite Roper all my property both real and personal after she has discharged my legal debts as long as she continueth single, and in case she marry's again, for her to have all the property which she had when I married her and one third of all my property & the balance to the child which she is now pregnant with, to be sold & the money to be put out at interest. And his will & desire was that his friends Benjamin & Samuel Roper should act as Executors. Sworn to this __ day of July, 1810 by Benjamin Roper, Samuel Roper & Jacob Earnest, Jr. Estate sale held August, 1810. Purchasers included: Lewis Holloway; Robert Lang, Sr; Charles Wood, John Barnes; Reason Barnes; (--) D. Wigfall; Benjamin Roper; John (Moon) This sees to match Wiley Roper m. Peggy in my files? Could not find the name of the Roper child with whom his wife if pregnant. Looked like a Richard Milly may have been guardian?? Or Roger M. Williams . Then a few packages later, this one, which is dated actually earlier than the one above was given. BOX 44, 1875 Willey Roper, Recorded Nov 24, 1807 Personally appreared before me, Benjamin Roper, David Roper, & Nancy Earnest who being sworn.. say that on the 19th of Nov, 1807 they were at the house of Wiley Roper & was called upon by said Roper as witnesses to his verbal Will, viz: All his just debts to be paid by our brother Jack & that his three horses plows and ? years of fodder, cotton, saddel bridel & ___ gun be sold on the breadth of twelve months & the remaining part of his estate to his wife Peggy in fee simple. And that the above will was the last will and Test. Of Wiely Roper, and that Joel Roper should be his executor to settle all his estate.
