    3. Is anyone researching the HATCHER,LANDRUM,CARPENTER, WHITLOCK,RANDAL, SWEARINGEN, and other related families in the area south of what became Trenton and the Pine Log House in Edgefield/Aiken Distric and/or Counties, South Carolina??? I also have a double TOOLE line in Barnwell as well. I triple post to all three lists because there was some migration back and forth before Aiken County was created. Some people are on one list and not the others. Can anyone tell me who the two little Carpenter boys were who are listed on the 1860 census of Edgefield District, South Carolina, with Amos Landrum??? The identity and relationship of John and Francis Carpenter in the estate records of the Hatchers has "stumped" me for years. Who were they and how were they related to the Hatchers? Have never been sure if Frances/Francis was male or female and whether John and France(i)s were husband and wife, brother and sister or just what??? They are in the Hatcher estate records and in the equity court records along with Alfred Hatcher, etc. 1860 census Edgefield District, South Carolina, written page 26, printed page 13, House #199/196, Lotts P. O. Jne 18, 1860. Amos Landrum 80 M $8500/5600 Farmer b. SC Betsey " 67 F b. SC Wm Carpenter 3 M b. SC Infant " In the printed/published copy copy of the 1860 census the name was transcribed "CarKeater", but the microfilm copy on Heritage Quest/Texshare sure looks more like Carpenter to me and is the more common name especially in that community. On the heritage Quest index Amos comes up as Landru"n." According to EDGEFIELD MARRIAGE RECORDS c. 1970 by Carlee T. McClendon Page 90 Amos Landrum married Elizabeth Hatcher, August 12, 1838 (Edgefield Advertiser). Elizabeth was the daughter of John Hatcher d.1825 and Christian _?_ b.c. 1773 Virginia d.c. 1852 Edgefield District, South Carolina. According to the 1850 census Amos & Elizabeth/Betsey had no children. If they did they ere deceased by the 1850 census. They were living with her widowed mother, Christian Hatcher. My Hatcher ancestor is Frances b. c. 1842, daughter of Alfred Hatcher, who apparently married James Whitlock c. 1864 d. mid-1870's. I am not researching the Landrum family. My main line is Carpenter and the others are branches from that line. Vivian Toole Cates, Rt. #2 Box 52-A, Alto, Texas 75925-9607 1-936-858-3801 http://www.inu.net/vcates

    3. One other thing - if you are on a number of Rootsweb lists and you are not getting mail for 24 hours from just a few of those lists, it could be that a Rootsweb server is down and it will take awhile to catch up. If you want to check, go to http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ and look for notices in the Yellow Box. It might say List 5 is down for maintenance for 12 hours or List 5 is not working and we are looking into the problem. Regards, Gaila

    3. If you think you may have gotten bounced from a Rootsweb list, you can go to Password Central and enter your email address. Then you will know which lists you are currently on. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ You can also check the archives to see if your messages are making it to the lists. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. If your posts are in the archives, then check your email address - make sure it hasn't been changed slightly by your ISP. Finally make sure that your ISP isn't holding or blocking your Rootsweb mail. Each subscriber needs to let their ISP know that Rootsweb mail is not spam. Best of luck, Gaila

    3. I've run into the same problem. If anything interferes with your net-access (a power-outage, a hurricane, or anything like that) for 24 hours, you get bounced from the Lists. The easiest thing to do is to sign up again for the ones that you want. Nothing ever gets "lost"--it's still there on the List Archives. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vivian Toole" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, October 16, 2004 9:31 PM Subject: I NEED HELP FROM LIST ADM/ ANYONE ELSE MISSING MESSAGES??? > Dear List Adm. and members (Edgefield, Barnwell, Aiken), I seem to be missing messages from these lists and probably some others too that I don't kow about. I sent the following message to the lists about not getting any messages for about 24 hours from about 2 dozens lists in all which is very unusual. The messages never came back to me on the lists, but I got two answers. One for the person who had apparently originally asked for help in planning a trip from California to Edgefield and who might share a surname with me and another from another person (don't know which list???)who had noticed that her volume of mail had seemed to be considerably reduced as well. Any body have any ideas about the situation. How do I make my own posting to the list come back to me on the lists so that I will know they are getting out to people. I belong to location lists in Georgia as well and to a number of surname lists as well. I noticed this a few weeks ago, but then it seemed to correct itself. Now it seems to be showing up again. Is this my imagination??? Or is there a problem. No one else seems to have commented on it, etc. Is it a malfunction on the part of rootsweb or have I accidentially "clicked" something on my computer that I should not have clicked??? Any ideas out there??? Vivian Cates, Alto

I am on maybe two dozen of the lists. I have not gotten any postings in roughly the last 24 hours which is highly unusual. Even on "slower" days I get around 10 of something and on "busier" days over 25 or so. I have checked with my local ISP provider and everything seems to be working. Test messages coming through from ISP and I can get on the Rootsweb home page, etc. On one of these South Carolina Lists (Barnwell, Aiken, Edgefield) someone in Dallas (Texas?) was recently asking for suggestions/information about getting ready for a research trip to South Carolina. I think it was on the Edgefield list if my memory serves me correctly. 1. Subscribe to at least two of these lists, if not all three. There was a lot more migration/marriage/estate buying of families back and forth than I have realized especially if they came and stayed for several generations and lived near the county line. Same idea would go for other bordering counties. 2. At South Carolina Archives, to save time, unless you just have to have a copy of that record to take with you or use the rest of your research visit, run a tab, write a check at the end of your research day/trip, and have the copies sent to you later. Don't waste your time trying to make all of your own copies. The SC staff can get better copies because they have more practice, etc. 3. At the courthouses hand copy the index references and then order the pages by mail from the SC archives. SC Archives will send the page copies if you have the reference pages, but they will not look up a lot fo "stuff" for you. Last time I got something it was 40 cents a page, but it may have gone up. Same thing goes for making copies at the three courthouses. Don't waste your time making your own copies in Edgefield at the courthouse from the microfilm or at the Tompkins library of the county records unless you just need a few pages to have to take with you for reference, etc. I have not been to the Aiken courthouse in years. For the Edgefield Courthouse you can no longer handle the early original records like we could back in the 1960's and 1970's. Everything is on microfilm, at least those I was researching were. When I was in the Barnwell courthouse about two years ago, I could handle the orginal records from the package and box numbers. Copy those right on the copy machine there which was a rather fast procedure. I was working mainly in the early records and estate office. Copies were cheaper, too, than the archives. In Barnwell District/County I have a double Toole line from Isaac Toole of the upper Three Runs area now in the Savannah River Project. All the cemeteries of that area have been done. There has been a book done on Ellenton and one on Myers Mill. Both I think out of print. Proof is lackling for the wives maiden names on my direct line. Isaac, Stephen b. c. 1780 d. 1863, Richard I. Manning Toole b. 1826, served in Company H 14th SC Inf. Private, d. 1895 buried in Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia. I have a data base, genealogy program of a lot of related families. Manning moved to Georgia 1870-1875 (Oconee/Greene County) then back to Augfusta c. 180-1895. In Edgefield I am researching Carpenter and allied families from the Trenton area. All there by the 1790 census. Whitlock, Booth,Hatcher, Swearingen,Randel (various spellings)and maybe Christian and a Roberson/Robertson/Robinson, etc. Vivian Toole Cates, Rt. #2 Box 52-A, Alto, Texas 75925-9607 1-936-858-3801 http;//www.inu.net/vcates

    2. Georgeanne McPeters
    3. Hi all, I am new to the list and am in need of some guidance, please. I have a wayward ancestor who moved to SC from GA and died there about 1934. I am told by family he died in Johnston and was buried in Aiken or vice versa. Anything to make a long distance search a challenge! <g> I am wondering if there might be compiled tombstone inscriptions for either area and if so, would some kind soul please take a look for John Harvey (aka Johnny) McPETERS. He may possibly be listed as a Reverend. Thanks so much, Georgeanne McPeters

    3. Please excuse the cross-posting - does anyone have any MATHIS/MATTHEWS + BRYANT connections that went from Edgefield to Autauga County, AL and then on to Shelby/Talladega County, AL? The 1846 records of the Tallasahatchie Baptist Church, Talladega County, have information on Deacon Elias MATHIS born Feb. 19, 1810 in the Edgefield District, SC. There is also a record of Elizabeth BRYANT (whose maiden name I believe to be MATHIS) transferring her membership from New Hope Baptist Church in Autauga Co., AL, and her husband William BRYANT petitioning for membership at the same time, having also been a former member of New Hope in Autauga Co. Nancy MATHIS also joined the Tallasahatchie Church in 1846, along with Frank SHERRELL and wife, Sarah, and Payton VINSANT. I don't have any relationship in my files on the latter two surnames. Records of this church also show Martha D. and Sarah MATHIS as members. Billie and Audrey have both posted a lot of info on these surnames, which I have followed closely but still unable to make a connection to our lines. Thanks! Evelyn

    3. Received several posts with Leverett info. in messages with Audrey Pool and others. Of interest was the deed with Hezekiah Gentry. Edgefield Co., SC,Deed Book 5, 133-134. 1 Dec 1790: Bill of Robert LEVERET, Sr, of Edgefield Co, SC to Hezekiah GENTRY, Sr for 150 pounds, sold two Negro boys named Jack & Sam. Please note that the census quote preceeded by a line of ****** is for 1850 not 1880. Thanks John for the heads up! 1. Estate of Beverly A. Carter, Edgefield Dist, SC filed Jan 13, 1849
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. Does anyone have any information on this family: This was on a scrap of paper I found and don't remember where I got it. It may have been from the probate record at the State Archives or copied from Janie Revill's book, as I have reference to that book on another notation on the other side of the paper. Estate of Beverly A. Carter, William Carter Adms. Box 55, pkg 2278, Edgefield Co, SC William Carter in Acct with his deceased ward, B. A. Carter L. G. Carter William Carter John T. Carter Charles Carter (purchaser at the estate sale) -------------------------------------------------- There is a William Carter mentioned in the Carter Ledger b. March 13, 1789. There is also a reference to another William in the ledger as follows: 1 William CARTER b: Abt. 1756 d: October 27, 1826 Edgefield District, SC . +KATHERINE b: Abt. 1770 d: November 24, 1819 Edgefield Dist, SC It is assumed that these folks are connected to the Charles Carter m. Lydia Scurry family but the relationship is unknown to me. Since Charles Carter is born not too long after the above William, I have speculated that they might be brothers?? 1 Charles CARTER b: January 04, 1763 Hillsborough Dist., NC d: October 29, 1843 Edgefield Co., SC . +Lydia SCURRY b: April 28, 1768 NC/SC m: April 06, 1786 Newberry Co., SC d: September 28, 1853 Edgefield Co, SC Mother: Mary Any help on this would be appreciated.
