Does anyone recognized my gggggrandparents's names? Nathaniel was born in 1765 and Amanda Blakely in 1768. They lived in Laurens and Edgefield Counties, S.C.. They probably stopped over in Georgia on their way south. They had at least two children....William and Francis/Frances. Their son William and wife Elizabeth Bonner had at least three sons, Nathaniel, John and Tyre. William and sons moved to Butler County, Alabama. I will be grateful for any info. Hi, Vivian and other list members-- Perhaps someone will recognize the following Edgefield PARKER. If so, I would love to hear from you. A Revolutionary soldier, Daniel PARKER married Elizabeth LUCAS, daughter of John LUCAS of Edgefield District. Daniel left a will, written 15 Sept 1806 and probated 27 Dec 1807. The will names wife Elizabeth and children--Richard, James, Rachel (m. John Gardner and dec. at time of the will), Judah, Elizabeth, Matilda, Ezekiel, and John, He also names the Garnder grandchildren, Salina and John, and appoints wife Elizabeth Parker, father-in-law John LUCAS and his brother Abraham LUCAS as executrix & executors. The witnesses are William Hill, Robert Kenney, and Nathan Parker... (John LUCAS is my fifth and sixth great grandfather (the odd result of a few marriages between cousins). Any help with this family greatly appreciated. walt boswell [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vivian Toole" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, October 28, 2004 11:46 PM Subject: PARKER/HATCHER/ROBERTSON/BARNES > I am looking for the parents of the following PARKER children in early > Edgefield District, South Carolina. I am looking for the parents of the following PARKER children in early Edgefield District, South Carolina. I did a search at Genforum.com and at Rootsweb and found no one on this line. Dear List Members, I am seeking proof as to whether Christian _?_ d. 1850-60, widow of John Hatcher d. 1825, was a Robertson/Robinson and who her parents would have been. This query is in response to recent posting to the Edgefield District/County, South Crolina, list and private e-mail about Robertson/Roberson and other spellings connections in Edgegield District, South Carolina. And in particular their connections with other families in the area of Edgefield around the Pine Log House (Swearingen's) and what later became Trenton because of the railroad stop. My connection with the Robertson/Roberson family is trying to either prove or disprove the contention Leonardo Andrea made in a 1948 Report on the Edgefield Hatchers, that Christian/a/ia Hatcher, the widow of John, the son of Lucy _?_ and Benjamin Hatcher Rev. War Sol., was a Roberson/Robertson. Leonardo Andrea also seemed to think that Lucy was a Cheatham from Virginia. The Robertson/Robinson connection was mentioned in a will of William Robertson/Roberson for 1840/1841 Edgefield that named a Christian Hatcher as an heir. I mailed a letter to the SC Archives today to try to get a copy of this will and the loose papers. Since I did not have a Box or Package Number or a will book and page number, I am not very hopeful of getting anything back. Andrea's report and a listing in Reviell's book only listed dates and no other reference. Temperance Roberson/Robertson was a daughter of John Roberson d. 1816 in Mississippi as given in the recent posting by Billie Jones. John Roberson's will is abstracted in the Wolley book of Edgefield Wills 1787-1836. By 1826 or about January 1827 Temperance Robertson/Roberson had married Bartlette/Bartley (various spellings)Hatcher. This is proven by an Equity Case #442 in Edgefield dated 1832. William Roberson/Robertson vs Bartlette Hatcher. Wm Roberson was claiming that Bartley Hatcher owed money to John Roberson's estate and Bartley Hatcher was claiming that he did not. Bartley Hatcher was the son of John Hatcher and Christian _?_. So if Bartlette Hatcher's mother was a Robertson and he married a Robertson/Roberson what kind of cousins would he and his wife Temperance be. First cousins once removed??? Seems as though from Andrea's summaries of the Hatcher Equity cases there were a number of marriages among the Hatcher cousins, descendents of Lucy and Benjamin. Douglas Robertson was a witness to Lucy Hatcher's (widow of Bemj. Rev. War. Sol)written in 1833. She died in 1839. A William Robertson was appointed an appraiser on the estate of John Hatcher c. 1826. Not clear from loose papers if he actually served or not. I am still trying to sort out these Hatchers and get them into my genealogy computer program. My Hatcher ancestor is Alfred b. c. 1800 d. after 1860, brother of Bartley Hatcher above. Any assistance with relationships is appreciated particular the identity of the other Hatcher man on the early census of Edgefield and how they might have been related to Benjamin. If you think this is of interest, then you can forward this to the list. Elisha Robertson is Elisha Gill Robertson, b. about 1793, d. 1/31/1850. He, a slave, and several children all died of typhoid fever in a six week period in late 1849 and early 1850. He was married to Mary M. O. Morgan. His father was Elisha Robinson, d. 1795 in Edgefield, with wife Sarah. Elisha Gill did have a brother William who married Nancy, and a sister, Lydia, who married Samuel Garner. I have not found out much about this branch of my family (Elisha Gill is my 4th great-grandfather.) I should add that some cousins are absolutely adamant that the name is Robinson, although I am using the predominant spellings I have seen for each individual. Sincerely, Sharon Clontz Rowe [email protected] -------------------------------------------- Hi Sharon, Good to hear from you. Last week I went to the state archives and extracted some info. on a couple of wills, all from Edgefield Dist, SC. The first one is an Elias who married Sarah, but dates don't work with what you have as the father of your Elisha Gill Robertson?? Can you identify them? Below is the info. I extracted. If someone has further info on the families, I am trying to tie one Harriett Robertson b. ca 1820-1825 and died before 1850 to her family. She married Ewell/Uel Coursey sometime Bef. 1835, and had the following 4 children. 1. Unknown daughter b. ca 1835 2. John Franklin Coursey b. September 26, 1838 (m. Paulina/Lina Dean) d. March 26, 1912, assume Saluda Co, SC but may have been Edgefield. 3. William H. Coursey b. July 25, 1841 (m. Malissa (Maliscy) Rearden) d. December 08, 1915, Graniteville, Aiken Co. SC 4. Mary Jane Coursey b. ca 1848 (m. Michael B. Arthur) d. May 03, 1915, Augusta Ga. 1. Unknown daughter shows up in the 1840 census, but not later. 2. John Franklin died a couple of years too soon to have a death cert. [my gg-grandfather] 3. William H. names Ewell Coursey as his father on his 1915 Death Certificate, no mother is given 4. Mary Jane Coursey Arthur's death cert. names her father Earl Coursey and mother Harriett Robertson So..... who is Harriett Robertson and who are her parents??? Hope someone can help. He also divided up the negroes that had been left to William Payne dec;d Proven with codicil 26 Nov. 1826 There seems to have been a problem as there is a document where all lands were ordered to be sold and debts paid. It seems to be saying that the heirs were reponsible for paying from their portion on debts. The estate probate was taken from the acting executor Albert G. Connor, "him having been arrested", and the estate was turned over to W. Brooks, Comminsioner of Equity. The legacy of Margaret Conner will pay 55 cents on the dollor for the debt and Jane Marsh to pay .44 on the dollar. Looks like Jane Marsh owes about $2600 back to the estate for the payment of debts. I did not see an line item pages of the legacy of Margaret Connor.

I am responding to your message to the SCAIKEN list as follows: I'm looking the parents John Hert (1850-abt1900) and Amanda Rotten (1857-1923). I am assuming that it was this John; However, his uncle William Rotton Sr. also had a son John, and since both families were members of the church, it is not known which John it was at the time. John Rotton, Jr. received at Rocky Creek Baptist Church, Edgefield Co., SC [per minutes 1831-1875] on Dec. 31 by letter. No female listed at the time. Was he not married them? However on Nov 6, 1853, he and Elizabeth were dismissed by letter. On Nov 4, 1854, they transferred their letter back to Rocky Creek. Where were they in the meantime? He was an active member and is mentioned numerous times on committees as well as closing the meetings with prayer. It is very possible that he was a Deacon in the church. The following reference was found in the minutes. Both John and John Jr. were members at the time: Oct 2, 1847 John Rotton elected Deacon. He was then ordained Nov 6, 1847. Vivian, I noted the following names, Roberson/Robertson/Robinson, were in the list of folks you research from the Old Edgefield Dist area. I am looking for a Family with a daughter Harriett who died before 1850 who married a Coursey. From my research, I believe that she is the missing mother of my ggg-grandfather John Franklin Coursey b. September 26, 1838, Shaws township, Edgefield Dist, SC (Shaws was one of the counties divided between Aiken Co. and Edgefield Co. when Aiken Co. was formed in 1871. Trenton is in the area of the Shaws township - so our Robertsons could be the same folks. ) I have no info. on her or other Robertsons yet. I have made a list of Robertsons from the Probate Records index microfilm at the State archives and hope to find one that mentions her, IF her father died before she did. I am basing the fact of her marriage to Ewell Coursey on the death certificate of Mary Coursey Arthur, b. ca Abt. 1848, who died May 03, 1915, Augusta, Richmond Co. Ga. Her death certificate gives the following info: 1915 - Death Cert # 5761, Augusta, Richmond Co,GA. Mrs. Mary Jane Arthur White, Female, Widow b: not given, age given as 65 father: Earl Coursey b. SC mother: Harriet Robertson b. SC d. May 3, 1915, Augusta, Richmond Co. Ga buried: West View Cem., [Augusta, GA] info. Mr. J. Coursey UT: R. E. Elliott, 1033 Ellis St, [Augusta, GA] In her obit are listed two other children of Ewell Coursey: Obit of Mary Jane Coursey, May 3, 1915, The Augusta Chronicle, Augusta, Richmond Co., GA. DEATH OF MRS. JANE ARTHUR Mrs. Jane Arthur, aged [65] years, widow of the late M. B. Arthur, died at 11:30 O'clock last night at her home, 1920 Fenwick St. Mrs. Arthur is survived by two brothers, Mr. J. B. Coursey, of Augusta, and Mr. W. H. Coursey of Graniteville. The funeral services will be held at the Woodlawn Baptist Church at 1 o'clock this afternoon; interment will be in West View Cemetery. I also have the death certificate for W. H. Coursey who lists his father as Ewell Coursey but does not list the mother. The mother with the family in the 1850 census is too young to be the mother of the first several children, and is younger than the wife listed in the 1840 census with Ewell. So....... this missing wife is the mother of my ggg-grandfather who was the oldest brother of Mary Jane Coursey Arthur. He died in 1914, in SC, just one year too soon to have a death cert. And I have not found an obit yet. He is buried at Dry Creek Baptist, Ward, Saluda Co, SC where several of his children attended church. Don't know where Ewell or Harriett Robertson Coursey are buried. I am sure that is a lot more than you wanted to know about the family, but thought some of the names might ring a bell. Please share info. on any of the early Robertson/Roberson/Robinson families that you have proven so I can decide to pursue or eliminate them from my search. here are the ones I have in a list to look up. It will take some time, as I have to travel to the State Archives for a day long trip, and them when go thru one whole Box and Package at the time to find all the folks on that one. An email address that may be only for ordering books, which are almost gone is [email protected] [Oct, 2002] I don't have much on them, but my ancestor, John Rotton, of Old Edgefield Dist, b. in the 1770s had a brother William Rotton who married Constance Kirkland, who is listed as the sister of the above Benjamin Kirkland. Regarding the DUKE family: There is a volunteer at the Edgefield Tompkin's library who works on the Duke family. Can't remember who it is but a message to them as [email protected] may help you find the person. remember to add the "-request " after L to subscribe to the list if you are not already a member. HC lists Johnnie Jackson as the son by this 2nd marriage. So I don't know if Emma and Elizabeth were the same wife or if there were two as HC states. The obit of Julia does not name her parents. Dear List Members, Again I am cross posting because of the county line changes and each list has a different membership. Please excuse the duplication. I am still trying to sort out all the HATCHERS and their connections in the Edgefield District, South Carolina area, especially the descendents of Benjamin Hatcher, Rev. Sol. and his wife, Lucy _?_. There were other Hatchers in the early census with no indication of how they were related to Benjamin. They either died without leaving surviving records or moved westward to Georgia and other places. My Hatcher line comes from Alfred Hatcher, son of John & Christian/a _?_, grandson of Benjamin and Lucy _?_. My female Hatcher line comes down from Frances, dau. of Alfred, through the Whitlock and Carpenter families who moved to Augusta, Georgia, after 1900. I have basically accounted for all of the remaining Hatchers on the 1860 census of Edgefield District, South Carolina. Now I am working backwards and forward with the census. I am trying to match up the census records with the information from the 1948 Leonardo Andrea report and the 1936 Rev. Francis Campbell Symonds, D. D. article in the WILLIAM AND MARY COLLEGE QUARTERLY, 2nd series, Vol. 16, No. 3, July 1936, pages 457-468 with the few estate records copies that I have obtained through the years. Then get it all entered in my computer genealogy program. Somebody may have already done this, but I don't have this in my computer connected to my line. If they have, I would like to hear from them to compare notes. I am looking for a husband for Lucinda [_?_]Hatcher who was on the 1840 and 1850 census of Edgefield District, South Carolina. She is missing in 1860. 1850 Census Edgefield District, South Carolina. Page 135. Lucinda Hatcher 37 Female b. SC over 20 cannot read or write Benjamin Hatcher 15 male laborer Edward Hatcher 13 male James 11 male This census page is fairly easy to read. However, I am not sure if her age was 37 or 57. The secnod number,7, is fairly clear. The first number is clear, but questionable. 37 seems to make the most sense. The ages of the chidren would indicate that she would have married a Hatcher man, probably sonewhere around her own age,in the early 1830, and that he died just prior to the 1840 census. Likely candidates might have been a son or grandson of either Benjamin b. c. 1722-74 d.c. 1856 or of John d. 1825 because those are the families who seem to have stayed in Edgefield. Anybody working on this branch of the Hatcher family? With the oldest son named Benjamin they have to fit in here somewhere. Vivian Cates, Rt. #2 Box 52-A, Alto, Texas 75925-9607

HC Ouzts caught an error I made in the post of the informatin on Edwin Perry Holloway. In it I stated "it seems like he [Edwin Perry] married Martha after Perry was born . . ." Edwin Perry married 2) +Sarah JENNINGS b: 1835 SC m: Abt. 1859 d: 1912. Their first child was the Martha. Thanks HC for catching the error and letting me know. HC also states: that he believed that Perry was the first born of the second marriage to Sarah Jennings. However, this next record, copied a couple of weeks ago from the Estate records on microfilm at the SC State Archives, seems to prove that Perry is the child of his first wife: The following Probate information regarding guardianship of his children indicates to me that he was married before and wife died before 1855: Edgefield Co. Probate, Box 75, Pkg 3039 John B. Holloway & others (minors), E.P. Holloway filed Sept 14, 1855 E. P. Holloway guardian of the persons and estates of John B., James R., Susan and Perry Holloway, minors. Bond by E. R. Hollway, Lewis Henderson, & Henry Holloway. Letters of Gurdianship to Edwin P. Holloway on behalf of his infant children (named above) "State of SC, Edgefield Dist, in ordinary: The humble petitioner Edwin Holloway respectfully shewth, That by an act of assembly of the state of SC passed Dec. 1851, granting the land deeded by John Blackwell to Jane Lyan (Logan) & her children which lands became (escheated) after the death of Charles B. & John (Logan) to the children of Jane Logan, your petitioner and his infant children, John B. Holloway, James R. Holloway, Susan Holloway, & Perry Holloway (all under the age of 12) are entitled to a distributive share of said lands. That the said infants by reason of the immaturity of their understanding are incapable of property governing and directing their portion of the of said lands. That the said lands have aready been sold for distribution under an order from the Court of Equity of which the proceeds of sale are now in the hands of the commissioner of equity for this District. Where fore your Petitioner, the father of the said infants prays that he may be appointed the guardian of the said infants to take charge of their said estates." E. P. Holloway Sept 14, 1855 I have the birthdate of this Perry Holloway as January 12, 1852, and that is probably about the time the first wife died. Jane could have died in childbirth or from complications afterward. This is speculation only. [Death date for Perry - McCormick County Cemeteries, prepared by the McCormick Co. Historical Society, 1987.] Billie Jones Camden, SC [email protected]
In helping a Chapman researcher look for some info. on her Chapman connections, I looked up the cem. records of some of the family in a file sent to me by Mr. Ouzts on Good Hope Lutheran Church. In that record it gave the following dates: Turner, James E. Jan 16 1861 Mar 7 1946 Turner, Emma CHAPMAN Nov 25 1860 Feb 19 1944 Chapman, Ellen Jan 1834 May 24 1914 Margie King sent me the following obit which is over a month off from the cem. record: The State Paper Thursday Jan 6, 1944 Mrs. James E. Turner Dies at Homes of Daughter in Batesburg, Rites Today Mrs. Emma Chapman Turner, 84 of Ridge Spring, died this afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Homer Hartley of Batesburg. She was a daughter of the late Jackson and Mrs. Ellen Forrest Chapman of the Good Hope section of Saluda county. Surviving are her husband James E. Turner; three sons, J.C. of Sumter, C. W. of Bath and D. H. of Augusta, two daughters Mrs. H. S. Fallaw of Ridge Spring and Mrs. Hartley, also a brother, Henry of Batesburg. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 Thursday afternoon from the Good Hope Lutheran church. Internment will be in the church cemetery. Now her death certificate gives her death as a day earlier than her obit and a month earlier that the cem. record, and it CONFIRMS her parentage. Remember, the date of death on a death Cert. and the cause of death are PRIMARY SOURCES, as they are made out by the Dr. and at the time of the death. All other info. is secondary. 1944 - Death Cert. #0860, Lexington Co, SC Emma Chapman Turner Female, White, married to James E. Turner, lived in Ridge Springs, SC b. I have noticed the name, POOL mentioned on the list, and I ran across something that might perhaps be of interest to someone researching that name. It is from a book called, "Passports of Southeastern Pioneers". Passports were required to travel through the Indian Lands. This one is from GA. Executive Department Tuesday 5th of March 1811 On Application ORDERED That a Passport be prepared for Messrs William POOL Senr with his wife, Wm POOL Junr with his wife three children and nine negroes, and John and Moses MCCLEVEN with their Sister, all from the County of Bulloch in this State to travel through the Creek Nation of Indians. Which was presented and signed #671 J Parker
