    1. Jose DANIELL of the Congaree, SC
    2. Robert Daniell
    3. Good morning, All. Below are my General Notes on Jose DANIELL of the Congarees. If anyone can link to Jose or others mentioned in the information below, please let know. In my effort to learn more about him, any other mentions of Jose, family links, or personal associations, would be greatly appreciated. Because associated surnames are spread among a number of SC Counties, I've posted to more than one list, kindly pardon that. Robert --- General Notes on Jose DANIELL: Seven references to Jose DANIELL (1757-1799), son of James DANIELL and grandson of William and Frances O'DANIEL of Stafford County, Virginia, have been found. All name him as "Jose". Jose DANIELL was born 6 Dec 1757 (probably SC, maybe VA). His birth was recorded in the Bible of his father, James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina and Hancock County, Georgia. James DANIELL was a son of William O'DANIEL of Stafford County, Virginia. The 1790 Census lists Jose DANIEL in Richland County, Camden District, South Carolina with no family and 28 slaves. No record of Jose being married or having children has been found. Jose DANIELE is the last person named in the index of the 1797 Last Will and Testament of John MIERS of Richland County, South Carolina. Others indexed as in this Will are John MIERS, Patsy MIERS, Jacob MIERS, Cathareine (sic) MIERS, Nursessee (sic) HARRISON, Ann Harriot HARRISON, William GOODWYN, Nan (Slave), Martin H. LARY, William HOLLADAY, John CULPEPER, Jose DANIELE. (Source: MSS WILL: BOOK C, PAGE 151; Estate Packet: Box 21, Pkg 512) (2 Frames). (The "LE" may be "LL" on the original, the second "L" being mistaken as "E" when transcribed. RLD) Jose DANIELL, along with his brother, Levi DANIELL, and William HARDWICK Jr. were named executors of the 1797 LW&T of James DANIELL of Hancock County, Georgia in which he was given "three hundred acres of land lying on the Congaree River and 400 acres in a place called 'The Ridge' and ten Negro slaves viz Buchrage and his wife Magga, and their three children, also a Negro man named Sippia and Judy his wife and their children Sarah, Stepney?, and Long Tom and Shaba, also one feather bed to him and his heirs forever." The death of Jose DANIELL was reported in the South Carolina Gazette of April 5, 1799: "Died in Charleston, on Tues. the 26th ult. Mr. Jose DANIEL of the Congaree." Jose died about 14 months after his father, apparently unexpected and intestate. A record of suit against the estate of his father James DANIELL is recorded in Hancock County, Georgia, Deed Book C, p. 543. "We, James TAYLOR and Matthew HOWELL of South Carolina, and the said HOWELL being an administrator of the goods and chattles of Jose DANIELL, deceased, have appointed Doctor Robert HENRICK (HENDRICK) of the same place, our true and lawful attorney, for us, in our names jointly, to ask, demand, sue for, recover and receive such legacies & c which said James TAYLOR and Matthew HOWELL jointly or either in own right or as administrator for the said Jose DANIELL, may be entitled by law to receive from the estate of JAMES DANIELL, late of State of Georgia, deceased. This 8th Jun 1801. Wit: Peter BREMER. Recorded 15th Jul 1801." This Deed of Conveyance, said to start on Edgefield South Carolina Deed Bk. 29, page 494, was transcribed by Robert Daniell from electronic copies of original pages graciously provided by Martha Taylor of La Pine, Alabama. Portions of the edges of the pages were not visible, causing missing page numbers and omission of words where indicated by "..." "Robert HENDRICK To William DANIEL Deed of Conveyance South Carolina Whereas on the suggestion of Robert HENDRICK and Mary his wife late Mary HOWELL the Relict of William HOWELL deceased of Richland District and State aforesaid that a certain Jose DANIEL of the same District and State died seized and possessed of sundry Lands and tenements in fee simple and among others of a certain Tract or parcels of Lands laying and situate in Edgefield District in the State aforesaid containing four hundred Acres more or less of which said Lands and tenements the said Robert HENDRICK and Mary his Wife together with Jesse TAYLOR James TAYLOR (now dec.d) Mary TAYLOR (Wife of Thomas) and Martha TAYLOR as legal Representatives of the said Jose DANIEL are entitled to partition by Virtue of the act of the general Assembly of the State entitled an ... for the obletion of the rights of primogeniture (unreadable) of partition did issue in the Court of common pleas for Richland District directed to certain commissioners therein named to make partition thereof, and whereas by the return of the said commissioners it did appear to the said Court that the lands and tenements above mentioned could not be divided and parted out between the several claimants should be sold on a credit of twelve months by the said Robert HENDRICK above mentioned, Administrator de bonis non of the said Jose DANIEL Dec.d and that the proceeds of such sale be divided among the representatives of the said Jose DANIEL as will more fully appear by the judgement, record and proceding of the said Court. Recorded 24th October 1809" --- Known relationships of Jose DANIELL to individuals above may lead to additional discoveries: William DANIEL, husband of Lucretia BELL, is a son of John O'DANIEL of Fairfax, Virginia, a first cousin of Jose DANIELL, and a nephew of James DANIELL, deceased (1798) of Hancock County, Georgia. Capt. James TAYLOR, a brother-in-law, married 2 Dec 1772 in Columbia, SC to Sarah DANIELL who died 6 Dec 1793. James DANIELL's will included bequeaths: "Item. I give and bequeath unto my son-in-law James TAYLOR three Negroes, (viz) Jack, Hannah, and Jane to him and his heirs forever. Item. I give and bequeath unto the heirs of my daughter Sarah and James TAYLOR five Negroes viz: Hollon?, Jubiter, Abram, Solomon and Prince to them and their heirs forever." "Mary HOWELL the Relict of William HOWELL" appears to be Mary DANIELL, Jose's sister who apparently married second Dr. Robert HENDRICK. Matthew HOWELL, not known, possibly a child of William & Mary Daniell HOWELL, or a brother of Jesse Malachi HOWELL (son or Malachi and Martha Epps Goodwyn HOWELL) who married circa 1798 Patience TAYLOR, Jose's niece, daughter of Capt. James and Sarah Daniell TAYLOR. Dr. Robert HENDRICK, brother-in-law, married to Mary DANIELL, 21 May 1795, in Columbia, South Carolina. James DANIELL's will included bequeaths: "Item. I give and bequeath to my son-in-law Robert HANDRICK one tract of land on Alligator Creek which land he has my titles for. Also 50 acres of land on the Broad River to him and his heirs forever." and "Item. I give and bequeath to my granddaughter Patsy HANDRICK three Negroes viz Joe, Ruker, Fillis? I also give her one half of the Negroes that I have lent to my wife after the death of my wife, to her and her heirs forever." William HARDWICK, Jr. was a brother of Nancy Hardwick DANIELL, widow of James DANIELL. Phil. E. PEARSON, a grandson of John PEARSON and Mary RAIFORD of Camden Co., SC, and 1st cousin of Martha Pearson COOK, wife of Jose's brother, Levi DANIELL (deceased Dec 1800) of Richland Co., SC and Hancock Co., GA Peter BREMER, unknown, likely a son of John BREMER/AR, a neighbor of James DANIEL/LL indexed with James on numerous land transactions in South Carolina. Moses KIRKLAND was the husband of Patience RAIFORD and a neighbor of James DANIELL. The MIERS appear to have been Jose's neighbors. William GOODWYN possibly a cousin through the GOODWYN, RAIFORD, HOWELL, PEARSON and DANIELL (DANIEL) marriages .

    3. Dear List Members, First a great big THANK YOU to all the list members who have sent me various tidbits of information on my Aiken/Edgefield/Augusta ancestors. All new stuff now available through the Internet that we did not have years ago when I first researched these families. I try to return the favor to others when I can. I am still trying to sort out my CARPENTER/WHITLOCK/HATCHER/SWEAROMGEN lines. My Carpenter great garndparents, Edward Carpenter and Emma Frances Whitlock, moved from the Trenton area of Edgefield County, South Carolina, to Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, c. 1902. She is supposed to have had two half sisters who were older than she, same mother, but different father, though they went by the Whitlock name and their births are recorded in the Whitlock Bible. After their mother died, their father remarried and had about a dozen more children. Frances V. m. John Fulmer. They are buried in the Graniteville Cemetery along with her mother, Fannie H. Whitlock. Name, but no dates on marker according to published cemetery book. Another subscriber sent me more information on this Fulmer family. I have found this family on the 1900 Aiken County, South Carolina, Census. However, I can find no trace of her sister, Ella S., b. NOvember 6, 1861. She is supposed to have married George Thompson at Vaculuse, South Carolina (Is this in Edgefield or Aiken County???), May 8, 1879. She died November 27, 1939, in Augusta; buried in the Magnolia Cemetery. Someone who subscribes to the AUGUSTA CHRONICLE online e-mailed me a copy of her obituary. She had two son, John G. Thompson and Richard L. Thompson, both of Augusta, three grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Can't find either of the sons on a census either. Has somebody on the lists come across these people??? The Texshare Heritage Quest census Indexes does not have one for 1930 Georgia. Have not found George Thompson in 1880 S C or 1900-1910-1920 in Augusta. He either got missed by the census taker or his listing got folded, spindled and mutulated in the transcription of the Index. Assistance appreciated. Vivian Cates, Rt. #2 Box 52-A, Alto, Texas 75925-9607 1-936-858-3801 http://www.inu.net/vcates

    3. Dear List Members, I am still trying to determine the maternal ancestry of one of my great grandmothers, Emma Frances Whitlock b. 1865 Trenton area of Edgefield District, South Carolina, married c. 1884 to Edward Carpenter who was about 25 years her senior. The family moved to Augusta, Georgia, 1900-1910. Emma's mother was Frances V. _?_ b. c. 1842 living with Alfred Hatcher in the 1850 and 1860 census of Edgefield District, South Carolina. However, Equity court case #1000 claims Alfred Hatcher had no children. Emma Frances Whitlock Carpenter only had three whole sisters according to her daughter, Gladys, now deceased. The Frances _?_ b. 1859 who married John Fulmar c. 1875 was her half sister. Same mother, differenet fathers. Another half sister b. 1861 m. George Thompson c. 1876. The births of Frances V and Ella S. are recorded in the Whitlock family Bible. The family story Gladys told was that they were half sisters and just went by the Whitlock name. Does anyone recognize this Fulmer Family from the 1900-1910-1920 Aiken County, South Carolina, and the Richmond County, Georgia, census.? So far I have not been able to locate them on any other census. I have free access to the census images through the Texashre Texas State Library program, but the indexes arenot very good for the people I am researching. John Fulmer d. 1923 and Frances d. 1939. Both buried in Graniteville Cemetery with two infant children who died in the 1890's. Can anyone researching these families acces an obituary or a death certificate that would show Frances Fulmer's parents names??? Any help appreciated. 2. Vivian Toole
    3. Hello List Members, I am still trying to sort out HATCHER family connections in the Pine Log House Trenton area of old Edgefield District, South Carolina. I have CARPENTER, WHITLOCK, BOOTH proven. Still trying to make connections on RANDAL and CHRISTIAN and prove parents of Frances HATCHER b. c. 1842 d.c. mid-1870's m. James Whitlock, Jr. If Alfred Hatcher did not have any children, then who were the parents of my Frances Hatcher Whitlock b.c. 1842 d.c. mid-1870's Edgefield District/County, South Carolina. She was marrried to or lived with James Whitlock, Jr. in 1870 Edgefield County, South Carolina. In 1850 and 1860 she and a John Hatcher b.c. 1840 were living in household of Alfred Swearingen. Edgefield Equity Court Case #1161, sometime after 1868. I don't have the exact dates yet. I have ordered the whole bunch of equity packages from the SC Archives. I was short on time last summer in Edgefield. Thus just copied the index for Hatcher Case numbers and have ordered from the S. C Archives in Columbia. I just made a copy of the cover page and the one beside it with all the list of names on it. I have found some of them on the census for which I have indexes for some years and no idexes for others. None are listed as minors with guardians and all the men are presumed to have survived the Civil War. Some I have tentatively identified from census and some I have not been able to find/match up with a census. Equity Case #1000 claims Alfred Hatcher died c. 1868 and had/left no children. Then who were all of the people living in his household in 1850 and 1860 that included my Frances _?_???? This list of names from the Equity case should help prove a lot of marriages in the absence of SC marriage records. Robt Hatcher & wife Permetia/Permelia vs. Alfred Hatcher & Sam Posey Admr. & others} Partition a/c & Relief. Robt. Hatcher, wife Permelia This couple was probably Hatcher 1st cousins. This Mary appears to be his second wife from the census. Was she also a Hatcher??? His first wife seems to have been Christia hatcher, dau of John and Christian Parker. Or is this a W. J. 1. Fw: New Walker Bible transcription in the QUILL and Online
    2. Judy Russell - Tom Russell
    3. Please help spread the news! A new Walker Bible is available for researchers. The Family Bible of Samuel Walker, jr, of Edgefield SC and Madison County, AL, is now transcribed in print and available online at: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/u/s/Judith-F-Russell/index.html with the kind permission of the this month's edition of the QUILL, journal of the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society, mailed November 1, 2004. (If you get an URL "error" message for that address, please try again..that's just a "busy" signal, it seems. The URL above is correct and working.) Samuel Walker, jr, was the son of Samuel and Martha-Jefferson Bell Walker of Edgefield SC in Revolutionary Times. The Bible lists formerly unknown birth and death dates for Samuel Jr, and for his sisters. It also clears up some previously noted discrepancies in the Edgefield records as well as confirms the link to the Bell family of Albemarle Parish. Two otherwise unknown siblings are listed. Our heartfelt thanks go to Emmitte Walker of Austin TX, owner of the Bible pages, who arranged for the photocopying and transmission of the pages, which have been in his family for over 150 years. What a thrill for Walker researchers! (And for more info about the QUILL and The Old Edgefield Genealogical Society Website go to http://oedgs.org ) Look forward to your questions and comments, Judy Russell Bogart, GA

    3. I am still trying to sort out the descendents of Captain Benjamin Hatcher, Rev. Sol, and his widow, Lucy_?_ and find the parents of my ancestor, Frances Hatcher b. c. 1842 in the household of Alfred Hatcher on the 1850 and 1860 census of Edgeifeld District, South Carolina. One of their sons, John Hatcher, d. 1825 and his wife, Christian Parker d. 1852. They had about 8-10 children named in his will, among whom were sons, John b. before 1804 and Alfred b. c. 1800 d. 1868. In his will John left his sons, John, Jr. and Alfred a tract of land called the Day Tract. John was to divide and Alfred got the choice. If Alfred died without children his part was to go to John Jr., his brother. Edgefield Equity case #1000 was brought by a John Hatcher against Rice and Susan Swearingen claiming that Rice and Susan Swearingen are occupying Alfred Hatcher's land to which he is entitled. John Hatcher claims that Alfred Hatcher died without child or children about 1868 and Rice and Susan Swearingen are refusing to give possession of the land. So if Alfred Hatcher died without children, who are all of these people living with him in the 1850 and 1860 Edgefield census and who are the parents of my ancestor Frances Hatcher b. c. 1842??? Was she a Hatcher or something else??? So where was Rice Swearingen in 1850 and 1860 and where is this John Hatcher on the census in 1850, 1860, and 1870??? He would have been somewhere around 70 years old. He was not named a minor in his father's will of 1825, meaning he was born before c. 1804 to be over 21 in 1825. By 1870 the Frances b. c. 1842 who was my ancestor had married James Whitlock and was deceased by 1880. She is supposed to be buried with a marker in the Graniteville Cemetery, but marker has no dates. Was John Hatcher b. c. 1840 in the household her brother? Alfred Hatcher is suppose to have married Frances Swearingen. Dates from two sources differ. One from Carlee MeClendon's Edgefield marriage book give 1820. Another reference give 1840-1841, church minutes. Did Rice Swearingen married the widow (Susan ? Hatcher) of Alfred Hatcher between c. 1868=1870??? In the 1860 census the 1 year old listed as Frances kirkland is actually suppose to be the daughter of Frances age 18. She had another daughter shortly there after, father of tow girls is unknown. Their births are listed in the Whitlock Bible. One married Fulmer and one married Thompson. My Ancestor, Emma Frances Whitlock was b. 1865. She supposedly only had two whole sisters. 1850 CENSUS EDGEFIELD DISTRICT, SOUTH CAROLINA. I have built up several pages of death cert. that I have looked up a few at a time when I had a chance over the past month or so. Hope the they help.
