    3. The Augusta Chronicle - Sunday Morning - January 26, 1941 - page 13 FUNERAL SERVICES FOR T.E. COLLINS TO BE HELD TODAY GRANITEVILLE, SC - Jan. 25 - Funeral services for Thomas Edward Collins, 83, who died last night at the home of a grandson, W.E. Collins, Jr., in North Augusta, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Graniteville Baptist Church. The Rev. J.K. Lawton will conduct the services and burial will follow in the Graniteville Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be W.W. Ford, J.P. Howard, J. E. Parker, John Watson, Jim Snelling and Monroe Hamilton. Mr. Collins, the Town Constable here for 25 years, was the husband of the late Mrs. Mary Jane Collins. He was a native of Edgefield County and a member of the Graniteville Baptist Church. In addition to the granson with whom he was residing at the time of his death, Mr.Collins is survived by three other grandchildren; one son, W. E. Collins, Sr. of North Augusta, and seven great grandchildren. *in notes from Tom Collins (Myrtle Beach) - he is listed as Thomas "Effort" Collins...I believe that this is a mistake due to the previous obituary and the obituary for his wife. The death date for Thomas "Effort" Collins matches the one for Thomas Edward Collins....Beth Collins In an email from Tom Collins, a direct descendant dated 8/8/02 he writes "my great-great-grandfather, James' son eventually sold the farm and moved to North Augusta and opened a movie theatre and a dry cleaning store on Main Street. His name was "Pop". The story is he had plenty of money to buy a home up on the hill, but not knowing the area or social politics, bought a home down in the bottom and made a big mistake socially." The Augusta Chronicle - Tuesday Morning - December 13, 1932 - Page 3 MRS. MARY J. 2. Collins, Elizabeth N.
    3. Claim of Widow for Service Pension (Gibson's Pension Files) from the U.S. Pension Office dated March 10, 1882. "State of South Carolina County of Edgefield On this 6th day of March, A.D. One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighty Two, personally appeared before me, W. L. Durst, a Notary Public, being a court of record within and for the County and State aforesaid, Adaline Collins aged 70 years, a resident of Kirseys, in the State of SC, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of Gibson Collins deceased, who was the identical Gibson Collins, who served under the name of Gibson Collins as a Sergeant in the company commanded by Captain John Key, in the (left blank) Regiment of South Carolina commanded by William Youngblood, who superseded Col. Carter, in the War of 1812; that her said husband volunteered at Pleasant Lane, South Carolina on or about the Autumn or later part A.D. 1813, for the term (left blank), and continued in actual service in said war for the term of several months and not known exactly, and thoses services terminated, by reason of an honorable discharge, at unknown, A.D. 1814. She further states that the following is a full description of her said husband at the time of his enlistment, viz age about 21 years, height 5' 8" or 9", black hair, blue eyes and fair complected. She further states that she was married to the said Gibson Collins near Kirkseys, in the County of Edgefield, and in the State of South Carolina, on the 6th day of November, A.D. 1842 by one John Trapp, who was a Minister of the Gospel; and that her said name before her said marriage was Adaline Coursey; and she further states that Gibson Collins had been married about the year 1820 to Mary Nobles who died in Newberry County, South Carolina about the year 1822 and that her said husband, Gibson Collins, died near Kirkseys, in the State of South Carolina, on the 2nd day of December, A.D. 1881, and that she has not again married; and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her said husband since the date of his discharge from the Army, viz: Edgefield County South Carolina except one year (1822) in Newberry County, South Carolina. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the pension to which she may be entitled under Sections 4736 to 4740, (inclusive) Revised Statutes, and the Act of March 9th, 1878, and hereby appoints (left blank), of (left blank), her true and lawful attorney, to prosecute her claim; and she further declares that she has heretofore made no application since death of Gibson Collins who drew a pension from 26th day of November 1872 to 4th day of September 1881 under Pension Certificate No. 19723, and that her residence is Kirkseys, County of Edgefield, State of South Carolina, and that her post-office address is Kirkseys Edgefield County, South Carolina (her mark X is on this document). It is attested by John Durst and B. F. Galphin. Also personally appeared John Durst, aged 75 years, residing at Kirkseys in South Carolina and B.F. Golfphin, aged 71 years, residing at Kirkseys in South Carolina, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me duly sworn, say that they have known the said Adaline Collins for sixty (60) years and for one year, respectively; that they were present and saw her sign her name (or make her mark) to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be; and they further say that they are able to identify her as the person who was the wife of the identical Gibson Collins who rendered the service alleged in the above application (in the company of John Key in the regiment of William Youngblood, in the War of 1812) by the following named facts and circumstance; viz: John Durst knew Adaline Coursey and Gibson Collins from infancy, knew of the time of their marriage and has lived near and known them since that time and knows that they lived together as man and wife until the death of Gibson Collins. Dated the sixth day of March 1882." In the Application for Accrued Pension (Widows) Claim dated February 9 1883, this document is witnessed by D.A. J. Bell and Elijah Faulkner it states "that they have know these to be living together as man and wife for twenty-five years, and they were both present when he died and shrouded him for burial." These two men are described as two neighbors. In his Declaration for a Pension dated April 1, 1872, it states that Gibson ..."served in the Volunteer service of the United States as a 4A Sgt. in Captain John Keys Company of the Col. Youngblood Regiment of South Carolina Militia Volunteers in the War of 1812. That he volunteered in the said service at Edgefield, in the State of South Carolina on or about the 10th day of December, A.D. 1812, for the period of three months, and was honorably discharged at Bluford Island, in the State of South Carolina, on or about the 12th day of March A.D. 1813 having continued in said service for more than sixty days"..... 1. Fw: Chapman Family Scandel? Quincy CHAPMAN m Florence POWELL 20 March 1876
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. OK, I know you Chapman researchers are like me and will collect anything on your surnames to try to put the families together. Here is a query regarding the Greenville area, an area that supplied quite a few folks who moved on down the Saluda River to Edgefield old Edgefield Dist, including Edgefield, Greenwood, Saluda etc. I don't know anything about them, but the name Florence Powell caught my eye as well as the Chapman. I have a Florence Powell but she is born Abt. 1855 [1870 Edgefield Co, SC hh#90, with parents]. One thing about where the children are when Quincy CHAPMAN married 2nd wife. Often when the children were small, they went to live with their maternal grandparents. Some women did not want to raise another woman's children I guess, or it is possible that they were on their honeymoon and did not need small children around. Look for the children's name in the 1880 census with the mother's family.. her parents or possibly even a sister. Billie Jones Remember, I know nothing about these folks, so post all comments back to the lists. Greenville Co., SC 1858 to Elias Richard CHAPMAN and Violet Rosanna NASH. He married Florence M. POWELL b abt 1862 on 20 May 1876 in Clayton County, Georgia. She was born in GA. On the 1880 Greenville County, Census, they were listed with two children: ?Liola, Viola, Leola age 3 born SC and a month old son whose name is unreadable also born SC. By March of 1881, Quincy has married Elizabeth Clarkley KAY. What happened to Florence and Children? Did they divorce? Some horrible accident killing wife and children-fire, buggy accident, etc. ? Did he abandon this family? Did she leave him (he was known to drink) and take the children? Any leads would be appreciated. I think I've found her parents and siblings in Clayton Co., GA: a C. S. Powell and wife Elizabeth. > > ______________________________

Probate Records on the LDS microfilms of Edgefield Records. I am just beginning my Robertson research and need to see how folks fit. I am looking for a Harriett Robertson, named as the mother of Mary Ann Coursey Arthur in her 1915 death cert., Augusta Ga. I believe her to be the possible first wife on my ggg-grandfather Ewell/Uel Coursey. I have more Robertson probate box/package numbers to research, so if anyone has other probate records, it would help if I had them and would save me time. Hope someone out there already has done many of the Robertsons of Old Edgefield Dist, SC/Maybe even in Abbeville. Sarah Robertson applied for letter of adm 23 Oct 1815 Letter of adm. issued to Sarah Robertson, March 15, 1816 Within the adm. The following Robertsons were listed, as RoberTsons: Sarah Robertson adm. of the estate of Elias Robertson; Joseph Robertson and Langford Robertson. The following was called Roberson - Sandford Roberson No relationships were given. In Feb, 1928, Joseph Jacobs, admn in right of my wife. [this sounds like Sarah remarried. Is that so?] Estate Sale held Dec 1827. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Box 24, pkg 861 - Will of John Robertson (or Robinson); William Robinson exor., File Sept 23, 1816 Sept 23, 1816 - appraisment of the property. Cash paid Daniel Robertson 1822 - $22.54 or 225.41? (could not tell where the decimal was and if a mark at the end was a 1 or just messy microfilm marks.) Jan 2, 1823 - paid Daniel Robertson $140 (no mention of legacy) Temperance Robertson one of the legatees - 1822, paid John Huff $100 for maintaining and supporting Temperance Robertson for 5 years, her being one of the legatees of John Robertson. And if my said grandson die leaving no wife or lawful ____, I BEQUEAT THE SAID LANDS AND BEFORES TO BE EQUALLY divided among the children or lineal descendents of daughter Margaret Conner and Jane Marsh in fee simple forever. [This item was revolked in a codicil dated 12/27/1823 due to the death of William Payne see notes below] 3rd I bequeath in fee simple to my granddaughter Elizabeth Marsh one Negro girl Young Sarah and increase and one feather bed & furniture. 4th I desire that the lands whereon I live containing about 400 acres more of less shall immediately after my death be divided from East to West into two tracts so as to throw into the upper part or house tract one 400 acres the most acres and I hereby give and bequeath the upper tract of the said land to my grandson William Robinson Marsh and the lower part of tract to ------ my grandson William Roberson Connor and should either of my grandsons die leaving no lawful ------ my will is that his part of the said land shall be divided equally among his brother and sisters or their lineal descendants. Daughter Margaret Connor's to childen receive Negroes Daughter Jane Marsh's children to receive Negroes Codicil gave the lands formerly left to grandson William PAYNE to his other grandsons William Robinson Connor, and William Robinson Marsh. He also divided up the negroes that had been left to William Payne dec;d Proven with codicil 26 Nov. 1826 COMMENTS: There seems to have been a problem as there is a document where all lands were ordered to be sold and debts paid. It seems to be saying that the heirs were reponsible for paying from their portion on debts. The estate probate was taken from the acting executor Albert G. Connor, "him having been arrested", and the estate was turned over to W. Brooks, Comminsioner of Equity. The legacy of Margaret Conner will pay 55 cents on the dollor for the debt and Jane Marsh to pay .44 on the dollar. Looks like Jane Marsh owes about $2600 back to the estate for the payment of debts. I did not see an line item pages of the legacy of Margaret Connor.

    3. I don't have this marked as having been sent. I extracted some data so cannot be sure I got it all. I know I sent it to some Gallman researchers, but cannot remember if I sent it to the whole list. I am not much of a Ryan or Gallman researcher, but the names came up in some of my research, so checked him out a couple of months ago when I was in Columbia at the State Archives. 3. I finally found the reference I had to Letha Etheridge in my info. and now I cannot find the person who sent me her name regarding another connecion. She is mentioned in the will of Anna Gentry Burnett Teer, when her son Mark leaves his portion to her. I am seeking the info. on their relationship. Will of Anna Gentry Tear - "Edgefield Co. Wills 1787-1836 - James & Vivian Woolsey, 1991 "Will of Anna Tear, being feeble in body but sound of mind and memory..."I commend my soul unto the hands of almighty God hoping for a pardon of all my sins and transgressions througt the victorious blood fo my beloved Savior" First I desire that my funeral charges and just debts be paid. I do appoint my loving sons Pleasant Burnett and Aaron Waite as my executors. Wit: John Carter, Jr Charles C. Burnett Signed Anna X Tear Proved by the oath of John Carter this 16th Sept 1829 and same time qualified Pleasant Burnett as executor." [Comment: I believe Aaron Wait to be her son-in-law m to daughter Anna Burnett; Linda Baughn is working on the presumption that he is a son of Anna Gentry, and that Anna Gentry married a Waite between Burnett and Teer.] The following made purchases at her estate sale: Pleasant Burnett, Aron Waits, Sarah Burnet, [A] Fowler, T. 2. Carol Pardue
    3. Regarding Walter F. Rearden and Lula Turner Rearden, I have Walter listed in the census as a cousin to David Thomas Hill. I also have Luellah Pardue married to Alonzo Rearden in my family records. Luellah was a cousin to David Thomas Hill's mother, Lucinda Pardue Goldman. Possible Deduction: Walter was the son of Luellah and Alonzo Rearden. Does anyone know for sure? Mike, please email me directly. Rhoden listed as her parents, the only Effie I have is: Ethel (Effie) Coursey (b. 11/21/1897[1901] SC, d. 9/13/1987)[1900][1910](m. Herbert Eustace Thurmond (b. 2/8/1898 SC, d. 10/16/1982)[s/o Hattie Lou Dorn & Preston E. (Press) Thurmond]) Red Oak Gr Edgefield HC, In the Thurmond file you mentioned that he and Effie had no children. However, I now have his obit which lists his children, one of whom lives about 8 miles from me and graduated from North Augusta High School with my mother. Obituary of Herbert E. Thurmond, Augusta Chronicle, Oct 17, 1983. Augusta, GA. Herbert E. Thurmond, 84, North Augusta, died Saturday in an Aiken Co. hospital. The funeral will be at 3 p, today at Big Stephens Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Lansing Tinsley officiating. Burial will be in the Red Oakgrove Baptist Church Cem., Edgefield Co, SC Mr. Thurmond was a native of SC and had lived in Edgefield Co. most of his life. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Big Stephens Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Effie C. Thurmond; a son Rodney Thurmond, Lawrenceville, GA.; and two daughters Florence Templeton, Clinton, SC and Sandra Ransom, Lugoff, SC. Friends may call at the church one hour before the funeral. Posey's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Since the daughter Mozell would have been about my mother's age, she would have been born about 1924. So if others are younger, it is logistically possible that Effie Coursey Thurmond married 1st Wiley D. Rhoden???? Then I found this in the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Cem. records, Aiken Co, SC [below Johnston and Ward, address I think is Edgefield?] Rhoden, Wiley D. Jun 23 1895 Jun 20 1977 Rhoden, Gertrude E. BOLAND Nov 10 1897 Sep 22 1965 If this is the right Wiley D., he and Effie must have divorced and both remarried???? But all of this speculation is really stretching the circumstancial evidence, without a shred of proof. I am very interested in connecting this Wiley D. Rhoden and Effie Coursey, parents of Mrs. Mary Rhoden Trotter Friar Thomas to their family line. I am finding Rhoden's that I can prove were of the Rotton/Rauton/Roton families that were, in the late 1700s and early 1800s all spelled Rotton. 3. Questions for you Ouzts experts out there: 1. Regarding Diedrich Ouzts' son by his 2nd marriage- Martin- Have seen Martin's wife listed as Hattie? From where did Hattie's name come? 2. Regarding Martin Ouzts (above)- Have seen his son Jacob Martin as being married to Martha "Patsy" Russell. What is the proof of Martha's surname as Russell. 3. Regarding Martha "Patsy" Russell (above)- Have seen her mother reported as Susannah Carter- What is the proof of that relationship? Whose wife was Susannah? Any help will be greatly appreciated. 3. Received the following message and double checked my info. I typed MILLER for her father's name rather than MARTIN when I sent the death certificate for Emmie Elizabeth Martin Deloach, Sometimes I stay on that microfilm too long and names start running together. Thanks to Javan for catching the typo and not letting it slip thru. Meanwhile I looked up her sons death cert. too. 1. CORRECTION on Death cert. of Abner T. Clegg.
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. I think I had previously posted the following death cert. from 1934. However, in the date of death line I typed 1924. Also placed the Elmwood Cem. in Edgefield but it is in Greenwood Co. So here it is corrected: NOTE that the date of birth is 1934 - Death Cert. # 15984, Greenwood SC Abner T. Clegg Male, White, Widowed, Supt. of City Streets b. August 22, 1855, SC father: A. J. Clegg, SC mother: Susan Schenk, SC d. Oct 8, 1934, Greenwood, Greenwood Co, SC cause: lobar Pneumonia informant: Samuel A. Clegg, Greenwood, SC RFT buried: Edgewood [Greenwood Co, SC ] UT: Blyth's Services I cannot find him in the Edgewood Cem. records that I have. When I double checked the info. I noted that that the age at death seemed to be way off from his birthdate given. I rechecked the Birthdate on the death cert. and the Aug. 22, 1855 date was correct as given in the DC. HOWEVER, his age at death was 49 yr. 1 mo 16 days. Which would work, according to my PAF date calculator to be August 23, 1885. Can anyone provide info. that will help narrow in on his dates. Maybe he was like my Dad. He has been 39 and holding for as long as I can remember, and I am waaaaay past him now. Billie Jones Camden, SC [email protected]
