    3. Always interested in "putting meat on the bones"! Grateful for any new tidbits.... My gg-grandparents, Pleasant "Plez" Doolittle THURMOND 1829-1887 and his wife Mary Isham VANCE 1842-1921 lived on a plantation near Meriweather, Edgefield (later McCormick) County, SC. Following is a list of their children that I transcribed directly from their Family Bible: Sarah Ann Harriet Henrietta THURMOND b: August 11, 1859 Pleasant Davis THURMOND b. September 16, 1861, m1. Elizabeth BROOKS, m2. Bettie E. DORN James Tolbert THURMOND b: November 05, 1863 Mary Ellen Josephine THURMOND b: February 22, 1866 Frances Jane THURMOND b: July 26, 1868 Margaret Anna THURMOND b: July 19, 1871, m. William Joseph WEST, Jr. b: June 26, 1867 Walter Eugene THURMOND b: July 19, 1876 Johnny Vance THURMOND b: June 20, 1878 Clarence THURMOND b: June 08, 1880 Mary Isham VANCE was the daughter of William VANCE from Kentucky and his wife Harriet ("Fannie"?) KEITH from Virginia. Mary was only age 15 years when she married "Plez" Thurmond and age 45 when he passed away. Here's a little of what I know about her life after his passing: Not long after the death of Plez Thurmond, Mary I. Thurmond became the first saleswoman for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Her sales area was called a "debit". Mary drove a buggy around her debit to make collections. In 1906 she was hired as the Matron of the Mary Warren Home in Augusta and remained in the position for thirteen years. In the April 1915 the Mary Warren Home moved into a new and larger building on Central Avenue. Mary's salary was then raised to the weekly sum of $15.00 with board. She resigned in March 1919, the minutes report she, "... decided from feebleness to give-up." In November 1921 she was at home at 1609 Broad Street in Augusta when she fell and fractured her left hip. She died 25 days later, on December 9, 1921, at University Hospital in Augusta: Cause of death attributed to her hip injury and complication of pneumonia. If anyone on the list can add the "tapestry" of my family history, it will be most gratefully appreciated. Happy Holidays, Mary West Rumora

Not in the walls... We have moved most of those into the climate controlled archives and are slowly and meticulously opening and documenting what was in the various boxes. We have moved about 50 or so boxes and there are others to be moved, but we have to open and document all of the ones we have moved first. We are applying for grants to help with this work and will as soon as we can microfilm those documents and have them available for all to research. Some of these documents, which are in pristine condition, date to before the formation of Edgefield county in 1785. Constance T. 2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. Beth, Thank you for posting the info. on the Collins folks. The more detailed info. on the Pension application of Adaline Coursey Collins may help me to determine which family she belongs to. Since John Durst says he had known them since infancy, I need to look at the 1820 -1840 census to see who all is living near John Durst. Her birthdate puts her about the same age as my ggg-grandfather Uel/Ewell Coursey, a possible brother, and surely a Cousin. [If anyone has census images of John Durst census records, it would please me to have them] I also found this interesting: You sent: In an email from Tom Collins, a direct descendant dated 8/8/02 he writes "my great-great-grandfather, James' son eventually sold the farm and moved to North Augusta and opened a movie theatre and a dry cleaning store on Main Street. His name was "Pop". The story is he had plenty of money to buy a home up on the hill, but not knowing the area or social politics, bought a home down in the bottom and made a big mistake socially." I may would have known Pop Collins altho the name does not ring a bell and he seems to be too old. However, I lived 1 block from the Marrah or Marah Theater, the only one in North Augusta and went there as a child every Sat for all day seriels and movies of the good guys cowboys and Indians, and the old tarzan etc movies. It was a ritual. Every child in the downtown area, which were the ones I knew were there. Probably from all over the area. I could go for 15 cents when I first went, which got me in, a a drink and some candy. Later it cost a quarter. As a young teen I "dated" there under the watchful eyes of the groups of friends who met there. This is one of those times I wish I could ask my Mom about things, as she was born in the house that I grew up in too. She may remember the Collins. In fact, I just looked in her 1941 high school annual, and she is pictured on the same page with a GRACE COLLINS. Maybe I should post all the names to the list one day from her annual. It was a wonderful small town, but really grew and changed after the Savannah River Plant was built, not that it was a bad change, just different when everyone no longer knew everyone else. Thanks again for posting the data and the obits for the folks from the death certificates. if you have other obits, all of us would love to see them. Billie Jones Camden, SC [email protected]

    3. It seems that many of the Prince George Co, VA families settled in Upper SC, or their descendants did. Many of the names seen in Prince Geo, later Brunswick, Mecklenburg and Lunenburg Countis, VA, are seen in Edgefield and other SC counties. 3. Billie, Re: Wm. Raburn Estate, Apartment 60, Package 2484, Film 162268 listed in your email below, I ordered this record from Edgefield County Archives in 1999. Yes, it is the William Raburn who married Susannah LOVELACE. His son, Henry B. Raburn, petitioned the court and was named Administrator after William RABURN died intestate in 1848. The estate settlement was in 1849. There are quite a few pages in this package. Thomas JONES and John ROTTON are listed on one of the documents along with H. B. RABURN binding them for $1,000 to do the inventory of the estate. Another document names Wm MOBLEY, Daniel MATHENY, Martin McCARTY and A. M. PADGETT appraisers. There is a long list of articles sold, name of purchaser and the amount paid to the estate. There is also included a sworn statement by Susannah RABORN requesting payment from the Estate of John MARTIN to the estate of Wm RABURN the amount of $2.00 for one week and one month's washing (I assume laundry.) John HILL, Esq., O! rdinary of Probate, Edgefield District, was the official who handled the petitions. On the list of buyers at the sheriff's sale, one name appears to read J. C. ROTTON, one Joseph ROTTON, on a couple of items each. I'll be happy to provide more information on these documents. They are on legal size paper so I'm not sure I could scan them to you very well but I could get copies made for you. 3. Edgefield Deed Book 32, p. 543: Thomas Warren, planter, to his son Burris Warren, Deed of Gift, 2 November 1815, love, 150 acres on Chincopin Creek part of tract formerly held by HOWELL JOHNSTON, also one griss [sic] mill on sd stream, two negroes Patt and one boy named Bonapartt; also 204 acres the land I now live on; also blacksmiths tools, give after my decease. Wit Thomas Walker, Nancey (x) Favours. /s/ Thomas (x) Warren. Proven 3 February 1816 by Thomas Walker; Nathan Norris JP. Rec 26 March 1816. I have no idea if this person is connected to the one you're seeking. Chinquapin Creek is a northwestern tributary of the North Fork of the Edisto River (starts just below Batesburg SC), so is only "barely" within old Edgefield--currently in Saluda Co--near the border with Lexington Co. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Prosser Genealogy - Comcast" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, December 03, 2004 9:14 PM Subject: HOWELL JOHNSTON Edgefield County List: I am a descendant of Howell JOHNSTON that settled in Lincoln County, Tennessee. It is believed that he migrated from South Carolina to Tennessee. He was born 26 May 1793. It has been passed on to me that he may have been a land surveyor by trade. I noticed that there is a Johnston community in Edgefield County, does anyone know any of the history of this community and if there may have been JOHNSTON Family that settled in this community? 1. William Goforth Moore, AKA Gallman

    3. When an ancestor changes his surname, this can leave family researchers barking up the wrong tree for extended periods of time. There is no way to be certain how often this has occurred, but at least one case is well-documented. On 2 Apr 1764, Francis Moore (b. ~1740) married Frances Foote (b. ~1744) in Fauquier Co VA. They had 3 children: 1. Beheathland Foote Moore, b. 28 Dec 1764 in VA "near the Maryland line"; married on 3 Jun 1784 Gen. William Butler (b. 1759 in VA, d. Sep 1821 in Edgefield SC). Source: Butler Family Bible and John A. Chapman, History of Edgefield County. 2. William Moore, b. 1766 in (probably) VA. Source: age in 1772 per Edgefield File Misc PP-114. 3. George B. Moore, b. 1768 in (probably) SC. Source of age as above. His middle name is not documented; however, the surname of his maternal grandmother Frances Berryman appears in later generations. The Moores moved from VA to Ninety-Six District by 1769, when Francis Moore purchased property on the Little River in (current) Laurens Co SC. He died in 1771 (SC Will Book SS 1771-74, p. 30; signed 1 Nov 1770, proven 3 Jun 1771). Widow Frances had married Moses Yarborough by the time she qualified as executrix in Jun 1771. They had a son Gilson Yarborough in Mar 1772. Moses Yarborough, "late of St. Mark's Parish, Craven County," died in the fall of 1772 (SC Will Book SS 1771-74, p. 280; will signed 2 Oct 1772, proven 26 Nov 1772). Widow Frances third-married Samuel Savage (d. 1804). They settled in Edgefield on the south bank of the Saluda, where they raised her Moore children, her Yarborough son, her Yarborough stepchildren, and his Savage children. George B. Moore is the son who has been misplaced by his descendants. Around 1799, he married Sarah ("Sally") Ryan (b. 4 Aug 1780 in Edgefield SC, d. 26 Jun 1860 in Edgefield SC). She was the daughter of Lacon Ryan (6 Jun 1748 - 4 Nov 1785), a lieutentant in the Edgefield militia company commanded by his older brother Capt. John Ryan. They had four children: 1. John Elder Moore, b. ~1800, d. ~1818 (listed as an heir among the four Moore children in Edgefield Equity Court records numbers 4-10, filed Jun 1817; absent from list of three Moore children named in Equity Court records #69, filed 13 Jan 1819). 2. Mary Elder Moore (1 Apr 1801 - 13 Oct 1881), married Benjamin Tillman in ~1818 (per Equity records above). 3. Elizabeth Berryman Moore (5 Mar 1803 - 19 Apr 1846), married Lacon Ryan (nephew of Capt. John Ryan) on 25 Apr 1820. 4. William Goforth Moore (10 Jul 1805 - 19 Oct 1888, buried in Claiborne Parish LA). George B. Moore was identified as a merchant in several deeds filed in Edgefield Deed Books 1-12; in each case, he or the firm "George B. Moore & Co." appears to be dealing in the slave trade. He died on 12 Mar 1806. (This date, like most other dates cited prior to 1827, was recorded in Capt. John Ryan's household record book.) Widow Sally Ryan Moore married neighbor Benjamin Gallman in Hancock Co GA on 17 Jun 1806. They continued to live on Horn's Creek in Edgefield where they had seven daughters: 1. Elizabeth Sellers Gallman (25 Oct 1807 - 17 Mar 1892), married Middleton Moseley. 2. Rachel Harding Gallman (25 Dec 1809 - 23 May 1829), married John Elder Francis Ryan. 3. Priscilla F. Gallman (16 Jan 1812 - 22 Sep 1829), did not marry. 4. Susan H. Gallman (12 May 1814 - xx), married Stanmore Butler Ryan. 5. Lucretia Burr Gallman (12 Nov 1816 - 31 Dec 1896), married Abner Bushnell. 6. Edney A. Gallman (1 Feb 1821 - 3 Sep 1857), married Monroe Augustine Ransom. 7. America F. Gallman (6 Aug 1825 - 14 Sep 1897), married Sidney S. Boyce. Sally Ryan's younger son, William Goforth Moore, survived to maturity. He was not quite a year old when his mother second-married Benjamin Gallman. In the Equity Court records of 1817, his name is listed as William G. Gallman among a list of "children of Sarah Gallman lately the widow of George B. Moore and formerly Sarah Ryan niece of sd Benjamin Ryan Sr." A subpoena in the Jun 1819 Equity records refers to him as "William Moore alias William Coleman," also as "William Moore otherwise called William Gallman by Benjamin Gallman his guardian." As an adult, he maintained the Gallman surname, but used the Coleman (occasionally Goldman) spelling. Benjamin Gallman's will, signed 15 Oct 1841, left the bulk of his estate for the lifetime use of his widow Sally, and directed that it be divided into seven shares following her death. The residual heirs included his five surviving daughters, and his grandson Benjamin Ryan by late daughter Rachel. The seventh share was left to "my 3 grandsons, viz--Benj. G. Gallman, Thomas B. Gallman and Francis B. Gallman, the sons of my son, William G. Gallman." This generation-skipping clause is the only way in which the legacy to his stepson was handled at all differently from the legacies to his daughters-by-blood. William seems to have adopted the Gallman surname as a young teenager, and was apparently treated as a son. Several DAR memberships among his descendants are based on the war service of his stepfather Benjamin's father Gasper Gallman. Gasper Gallman served in the same militia company as William Moore-Gallman's maternal grandfather Lt. Lacon Ryan: eligibility would not be affected by a corrected identification of William's biological father. The correction would also clarify the inconsistency about William's birth a year prior to the marriage of his assumed parents! I have no idea about the frequency with which 19th-century men adopted the surname of a stepfather. This single case is surely not the only time it occurred. Harriet Imrey [email protected]
