COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Howard Ervin Moody, 88, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, in Florence National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greater Columbia Literacy Council, 2728 Devine St., Columbia, SC 29205 or to Edgefield United Methodist Church, 309 Norris St., Edgefield, SC 29824. Mr. Moody, husband of the late Cleola Matthews Moody, died Sunday, Jan. 21. Born in Fork, he was the son of the late Van B. and Eula Owens Moody. After two years at Wofford College, he joined the Army Air Force during World War II as a gunner on a B-17 aircraft. His plane was shot down over occupied France. Wounded, he escaped the crash and was rescued by French farmers; later, he was picked up by German officers and taken to a prisoner of war camp for the remainder of the war. He returned to South Carolina, married Cleola Matthews Moody, graduated from Wofford College and earned a Master of Education from the University of South Carolina. He began his career as a public school administrator working in Spartanburg, York, Conway, Saluda and Edgefield, where he and Cleola retired. After retirement, he worked with the S.C. Literacy Association training tutors to help adults learn to read. He was always active with the Methodist Church, Lions Club, American Legion and United Way. He received a Service to Mankind Award from Edgefield County in 1998. Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Howard E. Jr. and Sharon Moody of Winnsboro; daughter, Rosemay Moody of Columbia; sister and brother-in-law, Agnes Foxworth and Clyde Gardner of Fayetteville, N.C., and Eppie Moody and Henry Richbourg of Dillon; grandson, Howard Eugene Moody of Winnsboro; and special cousins, John Campbell, Tom Campbell and Sara Jean Rogers. www.dunbarfunerals.com Published in the Morning News on 1/23/2007
