    1. Re: [SCDILLON] PACE descendants from Pee Dee area
    2. DAVID THOMPSON
    3. Greetings Joanne, I thought your reply was very interesting as I did not know George had a brother named James? I know James is a popular Pace name (my gr-gr grandfather was William James) but have never heard that George Pace's brother was so named. I would appreciate the reference or family story that suggests this? Maybe it was in Howard's book and I just missed it. From what I know, George's brother was John and only George moved down to Marion County between 1800-1810. Their is no James Pace I believe in early 1800's census records for Marion or Robeson, NC. 1810 and 1820 Marion Co. records indicate only George in 1810 and George and oldest son Archibald in 1820. In 1830 Marion, there is elder George, two sons (Henry, Richard) and Mary Pace who is widow of Archibald. The 1830 also has a James Pace in Franklin County, NC but he is 20-30 years old. Note there is also a William Pace in Franklin (still 1830 census) that is 30-40. Could be older brother to James? The father of George and John Pace was William and William's siblings included Lucrecia, Martha, Mary and James. The Howard book indicates: "George Pace of Franklin (NC) is the son of William who died in the early part of that census year (1790). He (George) married in Wake County and later moved down to South Carolina and settled in, it is believed, Marion County where he died at a very old age. John Pace of Franklin is the brother of George." [Note that is seems John is actually son of William and 2nd wife Obedience; 1st wife, Mary, had William Jr., George, and Martha (Patty).] I think it is clear that the Pace's from Franklin and other counties between 1810-1830 are related to Marion County Paces. However, it seems only George came to Marion with a family of six children and is the common ancestor to the Pee Dee area (Marion) Pace's. Could not find any James that was near age of George in SC or NC. Look forward to hearing from you concerning any information you have and other thoughts to clarify connection. Thanks, David P.s., You might have already seen this, but after writing above I looked in Ancestral Key to the Pee Dee by Mrs. Bethea and found that Jacob Alford is listed (1794-1814); son of Lodwick and Susanna. Jacob married a Mary Pace. More information available in Harlee Kinfolks book, page 1456. Have you seen either of books mentioned? >>> "JOANNE HARLEY" <jharley2@cox.net> 8:42:28 PM 7/3/2005 >>> I am a PACE descendant from the Pee Dee (Marlboro Co., Robeson Co.,NC)... supposedly down from George, but there is something of a question now as to whether it was George Pace or his brother , James Pace that I am descended from. Despite that... I ordered a book on the PACE family, "OUR COLONIAL ANCESTORS" by Bruce A. Howard. The book takes the family back to Jamestown.. to their arrival about 1619. Mr. Howard's book is very detailed and can be ordered from him at : Mr. Bruce A. Howard, P.O. Box 414, Quitman, Mississippi 39355. He probably has a few copies left. I am descended from a Mary Pace, wife of Jacob Alford of Robeson Co., NC, and thru their daughter Margaret Catherine Alford , who moved down to Bennettsville, SC after her mom died, & married into the MacLeod family of Marlboro Co., SC.. Most historians declared Mary a daughter of George Pace and his wife, Obedience Worsham, but Mr. Howard says after extensive research... he thinks George's daughter Mary was too old to be the wife of Jacob Alford.and that Mary is more likely to be the daughter of George's younger (?) brother James Pace. There is a document that shows that James had 3 children and the known children were James and William (leaving one unknown child).
