MONROE, N.C. — Evangelist Florence Roberts Clark, 62, of 8124 Dove Dale Lane, Charlotte, N.C., entered eternal rest Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at the Hospice Home of Monroe, N.C. Born in Dillon on Sept. 10, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Leroy Roberts and Catherine Marie Bethea Roberts. She was educated in the schools of Dillon County and graduated from Gordon High School in 1964. While living in Philadelphia, she was employed by General Electric for many years. Upon moving to Akron, Ohio, she was employed as a caregiver with Home Health Care. Florence responded to the call of the Lord and became an ordained evangelist. Prior to moving to Charlotte, N.C., in 2005, she attended Bible Temple Church of Prophecy. While living in Charlotte, she was a member of Heavens Gate Holiness Church, where she was Mother of the Church, faithfully ministered and served the community. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers: Maybel, J.E., Donald, Leroy Jr. and Robert Lincoln Roberts. She leaves to cherish her memories three sons, Gregory A. (Sharon) Brown of Florence, S.C., Robert C. (Deniece) Brown of Norfork, Va., and Reginald (Carolyn) of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, John Roberts of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Cora Lyman Roberts, Lottie Mae Roberts, both of Cleveland, and Rebecca Roberts Wright of Elyria, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Moody, husband of the late Cleola Matthews Moody, died Sunday, Jan. 21. Born in Fork, he was the son of the late Van B. and Eula Owens Moody. After two years at Wofford College, he joined the Army Air Force during World War II as a gunner on a B-17 aircraft. His plane was shot down over occupied France. Wounded, he escaped the crash and was rescued by French farmers; later, he was picked up by German officers and taken to a prisoner of war camp for the remainder of the war. He returned to South Carolina, married Cleola Matthews Moody, graduated from Wofford College and earned a Master of Education from the University of South Carolina. He began his career as a public school administrator working in Spartanburg, York, Conway, Saluda and Edgefield, where he and Cleola retired. After retirement, he worked with the S.C. Literacy Association training tutors to help adults learn to read. He was always active with the Methodist Church, Lions Club, American Legion and United Way. He received a Service to Mankind Award from Edgefield County in 1998. Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Howard E. Thelma Mozelle Cooper Jordan, wife of the late Arthur Buist Jordan, Jr., died after declining health, at Dillon Healthcare, Inc. (Pines Nursing Home) on Thursday, 18 January, 2007. Mrs. Jordan was 102 years old and had been in the Thorne Retirement Center, Lake View, for two years prior to moving to The Pines Nursing Home in December 2002. Mrs. Jordan was born 3 November, 1904 at Buffalo Pond near the town of Springfield in Orangeburg County. At an early age the family moved to Springfield where she grew up in a large family. She was the twelfth of thirteen children who were raised with a strong Baptist influence. Thelma C. Jordans father, Henry Garvin Cooper, and mother, Elizabeth Corbett, both were born in Orangeburg County. Mrs. Jordan graduated from Chicora College in Columbia, now known as Queens College in Charlotte, N.C. She came to Dillon in 1928 as a teacher and married Arthur Buist Jordan, Jr. in 1930. She was a member of the Dillon High School faculty for more than twenty years and earlier taught at East Elementary School. She taught four generations of children during her nearly forty years of teaching. She started her teaching career prior to Mr. J.V. Martin accepting his position as Superintendent and during the Depression years was paid in script rather than money. Mrs. Jordan was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where she had been a faithful member since 1930 and held many important offices on both the local and state levels. She served two terms as President of the Womens Society of Christian Service, was a member of the Wightman-Cottingham Circle, The Administrative Board of Main Street United Methodist Church, a charter member of The Etudier Club which was organized in 1938. In 1988, she was presented a plaque by the General Federation of Womens Clubs for outstanding work and distinguished service to the community and state. She was a former member of the Rose Garden Club. Survivors include her son, Arthur Buist Jordan, III (Carleene Myers), Dillon, four grandchildren, Mrs. Darleene Jordan Lathan (Edwin Kelley) of Greenville, S.C., Arthur Buist Jordan, IV (Elizabeth Hunter), Thomas Myers Jordan (Ellen Hunter) and Lawrence Cooper Jordan (Angela Zunk Lloyd), all of Dillon, one sister, Pansy Cooper Baughman, Columbia, twelve great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, 20 January, 2007 at Kannaday Funeral Home. Services will be Sunday, 21 January, 2007 at 3 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church, Dillon, conducted by the Rev. Mike Rouse. Organist, Robin Thompson, pianist, Polly Elkins, and soloists, Shaw and Rebecca Thompson and Arlene and David Boyd, will provide special music requested by Mrs. Jordan several years ago. She will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery by Kannaday Funeral Home. FLORENCE — Lt. Col. Charles Gerald DuBose, formerly of Columbia, died Friday, January 19, 2007 at the age of 95. He was born April 25, 1911 in the Cypress Community of Lee County, SC. He was the son of the late Charles B. DuBose, Sr. and Martha Melissa (Mattie) Parnell DuBose. Services will be conducted at Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia on Sunday, January 21 at 3:00 P.M. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park located at 845 Leesburg Road in Columbia. Richardson Funeral Home of Marion is in charge of arrangements. He graduated from Lamar High School in 1929, Wofford College in 1934, and in 1939 was awarded a Masters Degree from Duke University. He taught school in McColl, Baron Dekalb, Union, and Columbia. In February 1941 he was called to active duty in the US Army. Enroute to China he visited cities in Australia, Ceylon, India, and Burma. He was assigned to the CBI and was in China at the end of World War II. In 1946 he was married to Martha McDaniel in Washington Street United Methodist Church, which he joined in 1939. She died in 1978. After a 3? year tour at Western Maryland College, Westminister, MD, his next assignment was in Germany. In 1956 orders sent him to Korea, later to Japan and Hawaii. His next assignment was at Fort Jackson, where he retired in 1961. Among his decorations were the Combat Infantry Badge, The Bronze Star, The American Defense Ribbon, The Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, The World War II Victory Ribbon, and the Army Commendation Ribbon. After retirement he taught English at AC Flora High School from 1961-1975. The 1966 AC Flora Annual was dedicated to him as Teacher of the Year. He retired in 1975. In 1980 he married Daphne Muldrow of Bishopville. She died February 13, 1999. He is survived by his son C. (Guerry) DuBose, Jr. of Arlington, VA, stepsons, George (Charlotte) Muldrow of Marion, SC and John Henry (Ernie) Muldrow of Lynchburg, SC; stepdaughters, Frances (Tom) Gressette of Florence, SC and Daphne Dickerson of Florence, SC; step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by seven brothers, Charles DuBose of Summerville, SC, Fred DuBose of Cyprus Community, Ray DuBose of Dillon, SC, Ronald DuBose of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Sinclair DuBose of Cypress Community, Max DuBose of Bishopville, SC, and James Earl DuBose of Cypress Community. Three sisters, Marjorie Hicks of Concord, NC, Dorothy Rogers of Camden, SC, and Winnie DuBose of Cypress Community. Services for Mary Louise Whittington will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Latta Baptist Church with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Saturday in Cooper Funeral Home. Mrs. Whittington, 82, died Thursday, January 11, 2007 at the Pines Nursing Home. Born in Horry County, SC, November 19, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Daggett Royals and Frosty Ann Vereen Royals. She was the widow of the late Harry Alton Weatherford and the late Leslie A. Whittington. She was a longtime member of Latta Baptist Church where she attended the Harriett Dew Sunday School Class. She was a retired Registered Nurse with over 40 years of service to the Dillon County Community. Survivors include her children, Hermon A. Weatherford and his wife, Marie of Latta, Sharon King and her husband, Marion of Rock Hill, Leslie "Andy" Whittington, Jr. and his wife, Gail of St. Matthews, SC, and Mary Camp and her husband, Brett of Florence; brother, Dr. Daggett Royals and family of Greenville; 13 grandchildren. DILLON — John William Webb of Lake View, 85, died Thursday, January 11, 2007, in a Dillon Hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2007, in Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel in Florence. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. He was born in Florence, a son of the late Samuel Morris and Faye Cook Webb. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Webb graduated from Southwestern Seminary and served as Minister of Education at several churches in his career including Mullins First Baptist Church, Conway First Baptist Church, Park Street Baptist Church in Columbia and Western Branch Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA. Upon his retirement, he returned to Florence, where he was a member of First Baptist Church and the L.R. Perry Sunday School Class. Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Miller Webb of Lake View; a daughter and son-in-law, Gloria W. Lee and Marvin Lee Jr., of Dillon; a son and daughter-in-law, John W. Webb Jr. and Rosalind W. Webb, of Columbia; two brothers, Joe Webb of Florence and Thomas C. Webb of Sneed’s Ferry, N.C.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 300 S.
