Sherry, I sure would be grateful to see the cemetery data online where people in far-flung places could look at it easily. Will you be putting it on your website anytime soon? Thanks, John in Austin, Texas. -----Original Message----- From: Sherry Cawley [mailto:sjacaw@lowcountry.com] Sent: Monday, March 22, 2004 10:08 PM To: SCCOLLET-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCCOLLET] Cemeteries in Colleton County With so much talk about cemeteries in Colleton County, I'l like to let everyone know just where the Old St. Bartholomew Chapter is in their research. First, we are attempting to list all the known cemeteries in the county--even those that no longer have headstones. We have over 300 listed so far. You can check them out at our website: http://www.roostweb.com/~scosbc/ Remember that Colleton once included most of Dorchester County, all of Edisto Island, and part of Bamberg County. Except for about three on the list that are now in Bamberg County, all the rest are located in the boundaries of Colleton as it now stands. Second, most of Edisto Island is now part of Charleston County. We are not currently working on those cemeteries found on the Island. Third, we are working with the county 911 office to place cemeteries on a county map by townships. Then we will have specific directions to the majority of the cemeteries using current street and county road names. Fourth, We have identified a number of cemeteries that were not included in any of the previous publications. This will be corrected in the future when we update the cemeteries by the county townships instead of upper and lower imaginary county lines. Fifth, we are also working on a book of all those who served in the military and are buried in Colleton County. We now have over 1600 names and will probably add another 600 by the time we finish. Sixth, we are beginning projects to preserve some of the older cemeteries. We are now working with the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society on some of them. Our first project will be the Pon Pon Chapel of Ease Cemetery on Hwy 64 (Charleston Hwy). More on that later. If you know of a cemetery that is not on the list or one of your relatives served in the military and does not have a military marker, please contact us. They should be included in our projects. If you have any specific questions about any of these projects, please contact me at our email address: osbcscgc@yahoo.com Sherry Cawley, chapter president ==== SCCOLLET Mailing List ==== To unsubscribe: Send message addressed to SCCOLLET-L-request@rootsweb.com For Digest subscription, sent to SCCOLLET-D-request@rootsweb.com In the body of the message, enter only the word - unsubscribe ============================== Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial.
