Was there any documentation after the Civil War for former slaves to register for any reason in Colleton/Barnwell/Orangeburg Counties? Does anyone have a suggestion of a reference/resource for researching Mestizo/Mulatto persons of color, both free persons and slaves circa 1850 up to and after the Civil War in these counties? Thank you.
There is a page at the Colleton County SCGenWeb that provides links for African American research. http://www.patsabin.com/colleton/AfricanAm/ One site that may be of interest is Tom Blake's site, "Colleton County, South Carolina. Largest Slaveholders from 1860 Slave Census Schedules, and Surname Matches for African Americans on 1870 Census". http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ajac/sccolleton.htm Pat Sabin ----- Original Message ----- From: <Mcarolecooper@aol.com> To: <SCCOLLET-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 27, 2003 5:56 PM Subject: [SCCOLLET] Looking for information on Mestizo/Mulatto persons of color 1850's > Was there any documentation after the Civil War for former > slaves to register for any reason in Colleton/Barnwell/Orangeburg > Counties? > > Does anyone have a suggestion of a reference/resource for researching > Mestizo/Mulatto persons of color, both free persons and slaves circa 1850 > up to and after the Civil War in these counties? > > Thank you. > > > ==== SCCOLLET Mailing List ==== > Visit Colleton Co SCGenWeb - http://www.patsabin.com/colleton/ > Post your Wills, Obits, Deeds, Pensions,Bible Records! > http://www.patsabin.com/colleton/genconnect.htm > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >
