The author doesn't point out that William Preston Appleby commanded Company G, 4th SC Cavalry. At least three Smylys served under Capt. Appleby: John Smyly; Joseph Smyly, Jr., and Duncan Stewart Smyly. All three did not return home after the war. The author of THE SMYLY FAMILY is Mrs. Millie Warren Brunson of Orangeburg, SC, a cousin of Captain William P. Appleby. Bill's mother Amelia Stokes Appleby was a granddaughter of Benjamin Risher, Sr. and Mary Fontaine Risher. Mrs. Brunson is also a direct descendant of Benjamin and Mary through the marriage of Francis Fontaine Risher and Harriet Williams Risher. Francis and Harriet were frist cousins and grandchildren of Ben and Mary Risher. After the death of Francis, Harriet Williams Risher remarried, her second husband was George Warren. Mrs. Brunson is also a descendant of Harriet via that marriage. Needless to say besides being related to William P. Appleby, Mrs. Brunson is also related to Bill's sister Sarah Appleby. Sarah married her first cousin once removed, Richard Risher, Jr. Richard served under his cousin Capt. W. P. Appleby as a sergeant in Company G, 4th, SC Cavalry. Like the three Smylys mentioned above, Richard gave his life for his country and did not return home. After, the War Between the States, Sarah remarried. Sarah passed away on 30 June 1914 and her obituary appeared on page 5 of the 8 July 1914 issue of "The Press and Standard," The Walterboro, SC newspaper. Sarah's obituary follows: MRS SARAH O. STOKES DEAD / Passes away at Bramchville on the 30th of June Mrs. Sarah O, Stokes died at her home in Branchville on the evening of June 30th in the 77th year of her age. Her death was not unexpected as she had been an invalid for three years, at the same time coming as a distinct loss to her many friends and relatives. Mrs. Stokes was formerly Miss Sarah Appleby and was twice married, first to Richard Risher, of which union two children survive, J. R. Risher of Smoaks and R. F. Risher of Branchville. She was again married to J. A. Stokes and one daughter, Mrs. J. E. Byrd of Branchville survives her. She is also survived by nineteen grandchildren of whom James F. Risher is one. For many years Mrs. Stokes was a member of Green Pond Methodist Church and she will be missed much from the good works of this church. The remains will be interred Wednsday afternoon in the Stokes Cemetery at Smoaks in the presence of a sorrowing concourse of relatives and friends. END OF OBITUARY The obituary indicates Sarah was laid to rest, "...in the Stokes Cemetery near Smoaks." My fiirst impression was this was the Stokes-Tucker/Williams Stokes Cemetery on SC 61 near the enterance of the Buck Head Hunting Club. However, the cemetery Sarah was buried in is also known as the Stokes-Byrd Cemtery and is in a different location. From what I can tell the Bryans do not mention the Stokes-Byrd Cemetery in their book CEMETERIES OF UPPER COLLETON COUNTY. Possibly it is a lost cemetery. The obituary names only one of Sarah's nineteen grandchildren, James F. Risher. James Franklin risher had graduated from the Citadel in 1911. From 1912 to 1914 he had served as a lieutenant in Company K, 3rs, South Carolina Infantry. His civilian occupation was school teacher and he taught for 11 years in Colleton County Public Schools. He would eventually teach at Carlisle military school in Bamberg, SC and became owner of the school in the 1930's. He would later become owner of Camden Military School. in Camden, SC
