3. E. E. Vaughn's SC Af Am research website on SC GenWeb (listed under African American research) - US GenWeb - www.usgenweb.org // E. E. Vaughn - [email protected] ........................ South Carolina is a critical gen research State for millions of Americans, including African Americans. Scholars say more than 60% of living African Americans have at least 1 ancestor from SC. There are also SC genealogy ties from SC back to the Caribbean and back to England/Scotland, and to west Africa. That's why it was called the "triangle slave trade". I have found an 1870 census entry for ELLEN LOWNDES, age about 60, BLACK, born in SCOTLAND. There are lots of Black SC families now living in YORK, PENNSYLVANIA. It's a good place to check online phone listings for SC surnames. Researcher E. E. Vaughn has finished compiling her Black Cemeteries Book for RICHLAND COUNTY (Columbia) SC. Her book is 672 pages with over 16,000 entries. She advises Richland County Black marriages are found at the County Probate office. Earlier records are at the South Carolina Dept. of Archives and History (SCDAH), as well as old wills, probate, military, church records, census, bills of (slave) sale, etc. Death records from 1915 to 1949 are at the SCDAH. SCDAH website: South Carolina - Archives, Special Collections http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/ Many specialty records are in South Caroliniana collection, at Univ. of SC Website: South Caroliniana Library Home Page http://www.sc.edu/library/socar/index.html E. E. Vaughan's compiled Black Churches and Cemeteries of Richland County - almost 700 pages - is available for $60.00. Richland was a very large county. She sells her other SC county books for $30.00. ................. I will be off computer 5-20 April.
